Just seen on X. #TERFDayofVisibility proposed for 10th October because it's X X in Roman numerals. Suggested that women in support all over the world should wear red. Symbolic but also not as political as suffragette colours for those who need to be careful at work. I think I'll give this a go. https://x.com/sappholives83/status/1837232379179544598?t=wUUgCHATTW_qZ2O6c4z8NQ&s=19

I would be very wary of doing if you work for a multinational - wearing a lot of red on the 10th October is seen as celebrating Taiwanese National Day which is apparently 'problematic'. We have colleagues who have got into trouble for it. Apparently it's 'insensitive' to our mainland Chinese party snoops colleagues.

Chrysanthemum5 · 06/10/2024 14:43

Just bumping this as a reminder in case you wish to wear red on the 10th October. An easy way to show support without having to be very overt if (like me) you work in a place that is full on TWAW

JohnnyRememberMe · 26/09/2024 08:46

I'll be wearing a red top to work.

Catsmere · 26/09/2024 00:39

Huzzah, I found a bright red cardigan I'd forgotten I own - no need to spend $$ to get something!

Even penis fencing flatworms know that it’s no fun to be the impregnated one who’s left with the scar and all the work.

Apparently it often ends in a draw!

I don't have anything red in my wardrobe [probably traumatised in my youth by that Chris de Burgh song..Confused]
I was in my local craft-ish/haberdashery-ish shop yesterday, and found some blank DIY badges aka pins aka buttons.

So I bought a small tube of bright red paint and will paint the badges to share and wear on 10/10. I thought of adding 'XX' but I think a completely plain red badge will be striking.

Coming to think of it, you don't need a blank badge, a coat of bright red paint [or nail polish if you're KJKWink] on any old badge do the trick.

Great idea! I too have no red items clothing but I can do this 😀

Google didn't turn up slugs, but did turn up David Attenborough and surprisingly beautiful penis-fencing flatworms.

Which is a sentence I never thought I would type.

"Slugs have slightly different systems. They engage in penis jousting and the winner gets to be the penetrator."

My stepbrother has uncannily similar stories of boarding school life.

I don't know if it's designed specifically, but the Famous Artist Birdy Rose is a fabulous advocate for women and has fans including Maya Forstater and JK Rowling.

No disrespect to Birdy Rose intended - it's just that I had a very visceral reaction because of the horrific images glorifying 'top surgery' having Xs in the same place..

Snowypeaks · 24/09/2024 08:05

I had the same reaction as Marie, but I don't think that design is for the Oct 10th Day of Visibility anyway, which is about wearing red.

MassiveWordSalad · 24/09/2024 07:54

@MarieDeGournay maybe it's a reinterpretation? X marks the womanly bosom and not the tragic scar.

Iamnotalemming · 23/09/2024 23:37

Was not expecting to see the words 'penis jousting' on this thread but that is the joy of MN.

Anyway, I love this and will be at an evening work event on 10th. I have a burgundy trouser suit that I love - do you think that counts?

Catsmere · 23/09/2024 23:19

I have red boots, must hit the shops for a red shirt to go with them and jeans. At least it won't be stinking summer weather by October 10th.

JanesLittleGirl · 23/09/2024 22:18

I really do not suit red but I will be wearing red on 10th October.

Not to be pedantic, but some women aren't XX, as already stated (Turner Syndrome).
There is also a condition called Klinefelter syndrome - the presence of the Y gives male characteristics however they also have XX which results in feminine aspects. These people are often labelled intersex.
I get the idea of standing up for biological females, just not sure XX is the way to go.

People with Klinefelter syndrome are male.

As per someone else’s comment : let’s not overthink it!

according to the wisdom of my children) it's a bit of a race to see who can stick it in the other one first, in order to make baby snails. Whoever is the winner (their word) gets to pass on the seed and the other then has to carry and lay the eggs. Disclaimer: I have no idea if they are right.

They are broadly correct. It varies by species. For a start, not all species are hemaphrodites, and some of the ones that are will - under the right conditions - self fertilise rather than mating.

When hemaphrodite snails do mate, they usually both transfer sperm, and then produce eggs for the sperm they receive. However, producing eggs is metabolically costly so they have an immune-type reaction that destroys at least some of the received sperm. The ideal result for an individual snail is that all the sperm passed on meets and egg, and all the received sperm is destroyed - but of course if all snails were equal this would result in nobody producing any eggs and the species going extinct. So it's an arms race of stronger sperm and better immune systems and in any given mating 1 snail will have an advantage but overall it averages out.

But some species have also evolved a small calcium harpoon, which they attempt to fire at each other. Both snails in a mating pair will have this, but whoever is hit first doesn't get to fire in return. And the harpoon injects countermeasures that prevent the sperm destruction - so the successful shooter ensures its target will lay more eggs.

Slugs have slightly different systems. They engage in penis jousting and the winner gets to be the penetrator.

Amazing! The wisdom of the MN population is phenomenal.

So actually my children were describing slugs, but I now also know about snails. Thank you 😁

And (perhaps more importantly) hopefully any posters who want to think of people being "a mixture of the sexes" will realise that this can never apply to humans.

Obviously sex and gender identity are different: the former is a biological fact, the latter a belief that we all have an inner gendered essence. So (for believers), "a mixture of genders" might apply, but that has nothing whatsoever to do with anyone's sex.

Um... is it just me or does the design remind anyone else of the posters celebrating 'top surgery'... the crossed plasters over the scars where the breasts should be... ?

It's not possible to 'feel like a mixture of sexes' as nobody is a mixture of sexes, so no one knows how that would feel, were it possible.

And even if somebody was a mixture of sexes, nobody else would ever know what that felt like.

To be fair, snails might do. But their communication skills to express their feelings are lacking.

My children tried to imagine how they might feel at one point and "on edge" was the conclusion. Apparently (according to the wisdom of my children) it's a bit of a race to see who can stick it in the other one first, in order to make baby snails. Whoever is the winner (their word) gets to pass on the seed and the other then has to carry and lay the eggs. Disclaimer: I have no idea if they are right.

Perhaps a human who is a "mixture of the sexes" would feel and behave similarly, with their hermaphroditic genitals and reproductive systems?

Ah bugger I want the purple one! Might have to flash the cash and have two.
