Gisele Pelicot, utterly floored by this

I am totally stunned by what happened to Gisele Pelicot, it is beyond horrific. The violation, the betrayal of trust, and that so many 'normal' men thought what they were doing was OK. I am struggling to find words. I'm not wanting to belittle all the other horrendous cases of violence against women. But to be drugged in your own bed by your husband and your husband allow other men to come in and rape you and he films it and he puts it on the Internet and encourages other men to do this to their wives. For over 10 years. What the actual f###? How much more of this abuse are women going to have to take before something is really done to stop it?

There is no DNA evidence linking him to the murder because it seems it was lost, as I linked and quoted below.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/09/2024 20:58

His DNA was matched to the rape of Estella B in 1999 in 2010, but they didn't do anything about it because the case had already been closed in 2001. He was not a suspect in these crimes until recently.

IwantToRetire · 23/09/2024 20:51

Its not just 14 years ago, its dates back to 1991 (33 years?).

After his arrest in 2020, investigators implicated him in two other cases. In the fall of 2022, already under arrest, he was charged with the 1991 rape and murder of Sophie Narme, 23, in the 19th arrondissement of Paris. He denied the accusations brought by the cold case unit, dedicated to serial or unsolved crimes and based in Nanterre. These are accusations “based solely on conjecture,” denounced his lawyer, Béatrice Zavarro.

But Pélicot was also charged with an attempted rape in Seine-et-Marne in 1999. In this case, his DNA was found at the scene and he admitted the crime, but denied having used a weapon. The modus operandi was always the same: both women were drugged with ether “during a visit to an apartment; both victims were real estate agents,” according to the Nanterre prosecutor’s office. Dominique P. was also involved in the buying and selling of apartments.

Suspicions about previous crimes only emerged when the police began investigating the case on September 2, 2020, when the accused was caught in a supermarket in Carpentras (Vaucluse) filming up the skirts of several women with his phone. But it was not the first time, either.

On July 31, 2010, in another shopping center in Seine-et-Marne, he was also arrested for similar acts using a hidden camera inside a pen. He pleaded guilty and paid a fine of €100.

From the Mail article which I said was graphic:

It was during police interviews with Pélicot on remand in October 2022 that interrogators raised the Estella B. and Sophie Narme cases following requests from the newly-formed cold case unit in Nanterre, north-west of Paris.

This is when the DNA match to the 1999 Estella B case was finally made.

When confronted by the DNA evidence, during a third interrogation on the subject, Pélicot told officers in his interview statement: 'I'm going to tell you the truth. About this young woman who had to grow up and who is questioning herself. It's me.'

Pélicot, who was 46 at the time, said he had an uncontrollable 'urge' to approach her at the time, yet still denied he was intent on rape.
'What would have happened if she hadn't pulled away' he was asked.
'I don't know.'
'You were still well on your way to raping her.'
'I can't tell you.'
Later he insisted to the investigating judge that he had no plan to rape her, claiming he 'just intended to immobilize her (…), maybe to look at her.'

Hardly surprisingly, given the enormity of the case building against Pélicot, his protestations did not prevent him being charged with attempted rape with a weapon.

Investigators soon linked the case with the Sophie Narme one from December 4, 1991 in Paris, because of the disturbing similarities with the Estella B case.

Due to yet another unforgivable lapse in the machinery of justice, there is no DNA from Pélicot - nor any other attacker - in the Narme case.

Béatrice Zavarro, Pélicot's lawyer, said: 'The DNA in the case was lost by the sealed service, there is no evidence to link it.'

The judicial investigation into these two cases is 'nearing completion', according to the Nanterre prosecutor's office, meaning trials are likely in 2025.

I think they matched his DNA with semen found on the shoe of Estella B when he was arrested for upskirting, and let off with a fine, in 2010. They could have nicked him for that crime fourteen years ago. They didn't because...reasons!?

At least in France upskirting was considered a crime back then.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/09/2024 19:54

And if he is accused now, how have they found out just now, his blood DNA ?

Yes, I think so.

According to the DM article (although the DM so feck knows if it's accurate)

And in a shocking twist to the story of Pélicot's appalling crimes, it has emerged that the bureaucratic French legal system missed a golden opportunity to stop him in his tracks more than 14 years ago.

But for the legal red tape, he might well have been prevented from becoming what his own daughter described as 'one of the worst sexual predators of the last 20 years.'

In 2010, it was at a Carrefour supermarket in Collégien, a town in Seine-et-Marne, only five miles from Noisy, that Pélicot was caught by security guards filming up customers' skirts.

He escaped with a derisory €100 fine as part of a plea bargain – an alternative procedure to prosecution, allowing a perpetrator who acknowledges his guilt to be tried quickly.

But that year, the national automated genetic fingerprint database matched Pélicot's DNA with a trace of sperm found on Estella B.'s shoe eleven years earlier.

Yet because the Estella B. case was closed in 2001, the DNA 'match' was not used.

'There was a mess at the time,' said a judicial source close to the case. 'The information remained in a blind spot of justice, and Pélicot remained free. He was arrested ten years later, after raping and inviting dozens of men to rape his wife.

Thank you, how utterly ghastly.
In this instance, I wish they still had the death penalty.

Dominique Pelicot is also accused of the rape and murder of a 23-year-old estate agent in Paris in 1991. Sophie Narme was drugged, raped and stabbed in the chest.
Another estate agent, 19, was attacked in similar circumstances but escaped after fighting back. Police have said DNA extracted from blood at the scene matched his profile.

Thank you.
But by god thats sloppy reporting, it really pisses me off.

It doesnt say if he was accused in 1991, or now in 2024 for the crime in 1991.
Because if he was accused then, how could we be were we are now?
And if he is accused now, how have they found out just now, his blood DNA ?

In a separate case, Pelicot has been charged with raping and murdering a 23-year-old estate agent in Paris in 1991.

The former electrician - who is sitting in a wheelchair surrounded by prison guards for the hearing - has also admitted one rape in 1999, after DBNA testing linked him to the case.

For some reason this news is placed at the end of a piece on the youngest man accused of raping Gisele. Am searching for other reports.

Please can you post the link, Ive just spent 10 mins on that hell site without being able to find it, I feel quite sick at the tsunami of sexist sleaze Ive just waded through.
God its a vile rag.

It's true. She's confirmed it by 'apologising' (taken out context, very sorry if it's been misunderstood - some apology!).

she is quite insane

I cannot believe the court will protect these men - they are dangerous to women. The police should examine their hard drives and browsing history - I would bet that these are not isolated offences.

There was a post on Twitter today saying that the probability that they committed this crime and then the upskirting incident with such a huge gap with nothing happening was very low. As we know, this kind of behaviour is a pathology. I'm wondering whether the French police are now looking at other similar crimes within that time period...?

Appalonia · 23/09/2024 18:27

The fact he did it because he was ' bored'!!!! WTF. Man, get a hobby. So so blase and cruel. Your wife isn't a toy. Words cannot express just how awful this ' justification ' is...

I can't take this in without being distracted by the knots this person must tie themselves in if they are actually female

...I mean, why has no actual man written this??

Because no man would think this?

To say ‘all men’ is to talk about systemic violence perpetrated by all men, because all men, without exception, benefit from a system that dominates women. And since we are all the problem, we can all be part of the solution.

Because a man would say ‘but…not all men’

Really not surprising that the author was a woman/trans man. It’s unfortunate if they think they can help redress toxic masculinity though as they won’t.

When I was 15 (mid 80s) we had family friends who lived in a very rural area of France. We went on holiday to visit them and they booked a cottage nearby for us to stay in. Whenever my mum and I walked into the local village to do some shopping or just went for a walk down the lanes, the amount of men who openly stopped and stared at us or shouted suggestive comments at us was astounding. Even when we walked through the local town, men actually pinched our bottoms and made creepy comments.
Neither of us were great beauties, in fact, no English man/boy had ever shown any interest in me and my mum was just an ordinary middle aged woman. We laughed it off at first, then it became quite scary and we stopped going out without my dad. There was a definite difference in the French men's attitude towards us.

I don't think it's necessarily always HATE (though for some it is), it's thinking we're irrelevant - not full humans. I find that really chilling. And on such a large scale as in this terrible story, it really beggars belief. I am finding that really difficult to get my head around.

I just watched the 3-part drama about the Maitlis-Prince Andrew interview. There's a speech in the final episode when she talks to her husband about PA's arrogance, linking it to Epstein's arrogance and that of her own stalker - that certain men just want what they want and it simply never occurs to them to question whether they pursue it. One line went something like: Whenever he walks into a room the only thing he ever thinks about is himself.

At a (imo only very slightly) less heinous level this is true of every single man who is capable of walking out on a pregnant woman, a young family, a wife or child who develops additional needs. He simply thinks of what he wants - a shiny new wife/ a life free of broken nights' sleep, a salary to spend all on himself not on tedious children's kit and clothes and outings. That simple single pursuit of self-pleasure and self-reward seems to run very deep indeed in far too many men.

DreamHolidays · 23/09/2024 16:41

You’ll all be relieved that the trial will now be partially under closed doors to protect these men….

And given all the recent attacks on Feminists in France by tra particularly Stern, it feels like self serving bollocks.
