@DeanElderberry

And as for unsatisfied with who they are, that's up to them to change or adapt to, but again, not an indication that the body is in any way 'wrong'.

I'd agree with that, but the person affected may not.

Probably not. Anorexics want to continue to starve themselves, therapists try to keep them alive long enough to recover. Mental health service delivery can be life saving, but CANNOT be driven by the skewed perceptions of the person suffering from the disorder.

RainWithSunnySpells · 21/08/2024 13:23

I am not going to feel pressurised into feeling guilty about reading the SRS thread on the Farms.

I don't care if some people think it's awful or worse. I care about the truth and they archive primary sources and evidence. I have also seen some great concern for Griffin there while still alive.

We need to be aware of how awful these complications are. Memory holing the lot is not going to help the future Griffins of this world.

ArabellaScott · 21/08/2024 13:14

When a discussion is derailed and starts to revolve around one poster, who is not saying anything of substance but just variously insulting/impugning other posters, it's not usually to do with the subject under discussion, but more to do with someone desperate for attention/drama/supply.

It does nobody any favours to indulge this behaviour.

The #bekind and Handmaids' excuses are used too often. They've been worn out.

Uh, yes, obviously.

So stop trying to shame us out of speaking up, eh?

Caliga · 21/08/2024 12:57

ChaChaChooey · 21/08/2024 12:38

Oooh yes, ladies! We must remember our female socialisation and Be Kind at all times, even when unscrupulous doctors are cutting healthy body parts off of our daughters!

Do what? Say that this was a tragic and AVOIDABLE death, what can we do make sure the same thing does not happen to other innocent people?

I'm not convinced that that response is exploitative.

Nadeed · 21/08/2024 12:46

I agree this is exploitation of Griffin.
People do it all the time when someone is murdered or dies in unusual circumstances.

Dr Blackbird, I apologise, as you seem so upset at my posts. Nothing is aimed at you personally. I do have children (and am not an Aston grad BTW). I've been nothing but honest. My concern is only that Griffin is being exploited posthumously and on atrocious sites like KF. Even if MN posters have kinder motives, do other KF users?

So you agree with what we are saying, but don’t think we should say it? Out of respect for Griffin?

I am concerned about all the other young Griffins, that we have time to help.

Helleofabore · 21/08/2024 12:11

"I agree that the glibness of some of the comments on here is deeply, deeply offensive."

Absolutely. I don't believe many people with teenagers at the moment are not dealing with the issues one way or another. I know 5 families who are our friends who are dealing with issues just as you describe Dygger and that is not including friends of friends which seems to increase that dramatically.

But apparently, Mumsnet FWR is not the place to discuss it and we are ignorant and not genuine in our concern as we are constantly accused almost daily. Fuck that! That takes some fucking disconnected thinking to make those accusations on this board.

DeanElderberry · 21/08/2024 12:10

ps, for the avoidance of doubt, my own response to the question is no of course not. Even people with DSDs aren't in 'the wrong body'. They, like partially sighted people, or deaf people, or people with mental or physical developmental disorders, are in their own body, the only one they'll ever have.

Do you believe people can change sex?
No.*

Do you believe it's possible for people to literally be born in the wrong body?
No, not really. I do see that some people might feel unsatisfied with who they are or how they look, though, and feel the need to make changes. Therapy would be a good first step first, of course.

What on earth does 'no not really' mean in response to the question 'Do you believe it's possible for people to literally be born in the wrong body?'

Being 'unsatisfied with how they look' is part of the human condition. Being unhappy with their eyes that can't see properly, or their inability to walk, or not being tall enough to get things off the top shelf - none of those mean the body is 'wrong'.

And as for unsatisfied with who they are, that's up to them to change or adapt to, but again, not an indication that the body is in any way 'wrong'.

I’ll say this one more time. Caliga, along with freedom dogs before and others, has absolutely no insight or understanding or empathy for mothers with concerns about what has happened to Griffin happening to their own vulnerable children. And I am sick of the sanctimonious self righteous grandstanding from someone not at the coal face. Someone most likely without children. Possibly some grad from Aston. Ready to sacrifice the health, happiness and lives of vulnerable young people on the alter of genderism. So no more responses or engagement with these deeply unpleasant posts.

I've seen what parents go through when their ND or child with MH issues latches onto transitioning as the answer to all their problems. I'm part of a group that includes parents who are living with this nightmare at the moment, terrified that their child is going to do something that will have a massive negative long-term effect on their lives. One of my friends in the group has a very mentally unwell daughter who is threatening to cut off her own breasts if she's not given a mastectomy on the NHS. She's 15 and a very troubled girl.

I agree that the glibness of some of the comments on here is deeply, deeply offensive. I also agree that the only way of coping with it is not to engage.

A couple of my friends were exactly the same.
We were definite tomboys.
But ''Gender dysphoria'' wasn't thought of, then.

Looking back at some old family videos, I saw my ''tween/teen'' self, and it looked like a tall, slim boy! -''Tomboys'' were acceptable.

If someone has offered me ''puberty blockers'' at 11- I'd have taken them like a shot!

Same oakleaffy. Same.

All the adults kept referring to me as a boy most of my childhood, too.

I think there are plenty of us on this board have similar stories and insights. It makes sense that we do though, despite what some people think about posters on this board .

You are certainly not alone.

I suffered terribly from what would be called gender dysphoria when I was a tween/teen. I told my mum that I wanted to be a boy, she told me that it was not unusual but the reality was it was never going to happen.

Yes DrB. It is a constant tropish comment that really says more about the poster than the people that are being accused.

I cannot imagine what goes through someone's head that they think that posters on a parenting board would not be hugely concerned by this and want to discuss how things like this can happen and what changes may need to happen to prevent such horrific reports such as Griffin's own posts from happening.

''Treat mental health conditions with therapy, not with drugs and surgery.''

This.

As a child, I desperately wanted to be a boy.

They had much more fun, had more freedom- I even tried peeing through a loo roll inner at a young age,{Once} wanting to be a boy - I dreaded puberty, and feared periods and didn't want breasts.

But came to terms with it - puberty is hard on so many girls in particular.

It is clearly a mental health issue, and I'm so glad that hormones and surgery wasn't a ''thing'' back then.

You are certainly not alone.

Absolutely DrB

Grey rocks are generally useful in such circumstances.

Isn't it? That's how I feel about posters who say they are "so concerned" about a young person who is now deceased - so concerned that they discuss them using the wrong pronoun, visit Kiwifarms and sift through old posts and images of theirs (including surgery), etc. So, so solicitous! No, you're fuelled by these things.

So you agree that the discussions are intelligent, even though most of us (according to you) aren't serious or well-informed?

Read again - I wrote that most posters are serious.

No, you said that you thought that most of us were not serious and well-informed. This is what you wrote:

You can believe all you want that this is more academic than the rest of Mumsnet, and most posters here are serious and well-informed, but that's not what I've gleaned over a few good years reading FWR.
