This is just wonderful news.

Take note, all of the institutions that continue to discriminate against lawful gender critical beliefs.

I'd be interested in just how many clinicians are struggling to sleep right now. I'm sure some won't bother their arses, but I'd like to think the majority who hopped on the bandwagon are having some serious "oh shit, what've I done?" moments.

Here's the full text of the apology from Metanoia:

"We are pleased to announce that we have reached settlement in the Employment Tribunal claim brought by James Esses against us.

Metanoia recognises that gender-critical beliefs are protected under the Equality Act 2010. These are the beliefs that sex is binary, immutable and biological and is fundamentally important. Whilst Metanoia specialises in professional training for those working in adult and not child psychotherapy it accepts as a matter of general principle the validity of the professional belief that children with gender dysphoria should be treated with explorative therapy, rather than being affirmed towards medical intervention. Discrimination against students because of these beliefs is unlawful.

Metanoia also acknowledges the changing policy landscape in this field, including the significant UKCP withdrawal from the 2017 Memorandum of Understanding on Conversion Therapy, on child safeguarding grounds, as well as the outcome of the Cass Review. We accept that Mr Esses’ advocacy on this subject-matter was motivated by a desire to protect children.

We also recognise the importance of freedom of speech within educational institutions and the steps taken by the government in this regard, including the recent introduction of the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023.
We accept that in our treatment of Mr Esses we were in breach of our own policies, when we summarily, and without due process, expelled him from his Masters’ course in Integrative Psychotherapy. Mr Esses was not afforded a hearing or an internal appeal.

We also apologise for publicising Mr Esses’ expulsion on social media and in other communications. We accept that the Institute’s public comment on social media contributed to Mr Esses receiving online abuse from third parties, which we condemn.

As a consequence of his expulsion, Mr Esses was barred from the opportunity of completing the additional two years of his studies and receiving his qualification with the Institute. Mr Esses passed every assessment undertaken which had been marked, had received positive feedback from his clinical placements and, at the time of his expulsion, had been signed off to set up in private practice by his supervisor, clinical placement and personal tutor. We apologise to him for the impact of his expulsion, both professional and personal.

Notwithstanding the fact that high-quality therapy is rooted in empathy, active listening and unconditional positive regard, we did not fulfil these values in our treatment of Mr Esses. For this we apologise fully.

We will seek to learn the lessons from this ordeal to ensure that this never happens to another student within our Institute and have already taken significant steps so as to improve quality in decision-making. We acknowledge the hurt that it has caused to Mr Esses and wish him well for the future."

It really is interesting that they admit that so much has changed so quickly in the medical understanding around this ideological led issue. The very foundation of affirming only truly has been shaken.

GenderBlender · 14/08/2024 10:56

Now, that's how to do an apology. Won't undo the harm they caused, but at least he can say he made a positive impact.

That's a very good apology letter. Professional and reflective. I wonder who has left? Cos that big a change of attitude is usually only possible when accompanied by a forceful personality leaving.

Congratulations to James, and well done for staying strong through what must have been a very upsetting experience.

I agree that the letter is very good, an exemplar for all apology letters, none of the mealy-mouthed 'we're sorry if anybody was offended' 'we're sorry you think we did something wrong' kind of stuff😠

Credit where credit is due to the Metanoia Institute for acknowledging their wrong and trying to make things right.

I like to recognise 'confession and a firm purpose of amendment' when it occurs, which ex- or indeed current Catholics will recognise as the pre-requisites for forgiveness.

A bit Pollyanna-ish of me, perhaps, but fair dues to Metanoia for that letter.

Mostly though, Bravo and thank you James!

Excellent news

YellowAsteroid · 14/08/2024 10:39

Wow! Wonderful news.

GeorgeOrwellsTurningGrave · 14/08/2024 10:39

I'm so pleased for James. He's such a thoroughly decent and thoughtful person. I hope the therapeutic profession hasn't lost him entirely. And, as others have said, that reads like a sincere and reflective apology. Let's hope those words find practical steps going forward so they do protect future and present students from egregious bullying in future.

'The Trustees raised the following questions and comments:
• What risks will the staffing issues cause and is there a chance courses will
not run? The CEO advised that there is a financial and reputational risk but
is aware of positive news on recruitment. '

Looks like there may have been a lot of upset going on, behind all that blacked out text.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 14/08/2024 10:38

This is such great news. Great apology letter too.

Maya Forstater really has changed the landscape on this issue hasn't she?

Hopefully the message is getting through.

Interestingly, at the last meeting of the Trustees, June 2023, the minutes show concerns raised about staff leaving. However, substantial portions of the minutes are blacked out so we can't be sure what was discussed ... also seems there was a 'culture review' that seems to have upset some people:

'Culture Review: Has commenced, concerns have been raised with who the
consultants are and their connections to the Institute. Q&A sessions have
been held with staff to provide reassurances on how the selection was
made.'

'...the culture needs to change with a communication piece and middle management involvement.'

'Trustee Neil Laventure asked the CEO for a view on why staff are leaving.
The CEO noted that there is general turnover, [BLACKED OUT TEXT]'

More of a 'result' than I was expecting, tbh. I agree, that there must have been a change in personnel for this to be possible.

AIstolemylunch · 14/08/2024 10:35

Such great news.

Hopefully he is young enough to continue his training and move forward with his career. He wont be short of patients now i'd have thought. The first thing I'd do if one of my children started getting pulled into the gender cult would be to seek out someone like him.

TrainedByDinosaurs · 14/08/2024 10:33

Great result, let’s hope it makes it easier for counsellors to be reality based going forward

Excellent. Well done, James.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 14/08/2024 10:19

I'm very happy to see such a good outcome and a wholehearted apology.

Turophilic · 14/08/2024 10:14

Brilliant news, and richly deserved.

I hope an eye wateringly large settlement accompanied it.

Helleofabore · 14/08/2024 10:13

I just read this. It is excellent news.

Great news. And the apology letter from Metanoia was actually much more of a full aknowledgement of their mistakes than I had expected after having read James Esses' tweet. It actually read as if they had fully and sincerely taken on board their mistakes and sincerely wanted to move forward appropriately,

Yes a real apology

Yes exactly. Especially appreciate where they say they note that they had not applied their professional values of empathy, active listening, and unconconditional positive regard to James in their dealings with him.
That suggests true reflection.

Bellamari · 14/08/2024 10:08

What happens to him now though? He’s still lost his career.

user1471538275 · 14/08/2024 10:08

So glad that finally he has got this result.

But, how long has this taken and what a toll he has paid in the meantime - which I suppose is why they keep doing this to people.

I am especially irritated that many of the Institutes are taxpayer funded so don't end up 'paying' personally in the way that the people who they target do.

DameMaud · 14/08/2024 10:06

That works Thelnebriati
My attempt just came out as a full stop😂
