She could have put this to bed by sharing DNA tests. I'm struggling to feel sympathy, although it must be horrid.

I'm old enough to remember the case. You will note he didn't always win which spoils the argument about women will never have a chance in sport.

Do you think he always knew?

Nobody is making the argument thay men never lose, what are you talking about?

BeyondOlympicLevelProcrastinator · 11/08/2024 10:26

Years ago I used to fight back when I was in a DV relationship, sometimes I'd "win". Does that prove MVAWG is a lie?

Is it possible to go through life thinking you are female, with everyone from the midwife who delivered you to your close family thinking you are female and then find out you aren't?

What does "presenting as female" actually mean? I knew a girl who was very sporty, slim but muscular, always played sports with the boys. She could easily have been a target for this sort of speculation if she was 20 years younger. Of course when she gave birth to her two children the speculation would probably have stopped.

Not if you are involved with professional coaches looking to take you to international level it's not.

It's disengenous to say differently.

Why are the questions being leveled at individuals and not the experienced coaches, national governing bodies and the IOC?

Individuals are supposed to be looked after. Those who train them have duty of care responsibilities. The IOC has a duty to oversee duty of care responsibilities.

One of the reasons anti-doping rules were brought in, related to the well being of athletes.

We know that very young female gymnasts were deliberately made pregnant by their coaches and forced to give birth to improve performance. That lead to increased checks on international athletes and their medical wellbeing. Even then we've seen issues with abuse. And this is an ongoing fight to improve conditions for vulnerable athletes.

The IOC is responsible for governance and fairness. It sets out standards for good practice . It would be good to see this point reflected in debates on the subject and how there are multiple layers of observation.

A sex test is the final piece in a much bigger picture. It is not the first point at which an issue is noticeable by those with expertise and knowledge.

I will re phrase, if I discovered I was a man, i would be devastated, but I wouldn't lie about it and fight women, especially in front of the whole world. Some poor people rob and kill people to put food on the table, doesn't make it ok because they are poor.

Isn't one of the problems that the IBA aren't being very forthcoming with what the tests were and what they showed. Maybe neither of them are convinced, it must be a difficult thing to get your head round.

Maybe stop with all the killing references, no one has died. It just ramps up the hate for two individuals in a situation none of us would want to find ourselves in.

Are you serious? That a male bodied athlete doesn’t always win against female athletes, so that makes it ok?

Tell that to the women who have been beaten, punched and hurt by a “person” with 162% greater power in their punch than a female will ever have!

And both boxers were able to appeal the IBA results. Khelif started an appeal and dropped it and the other boxer didn't appeal. The results would have become public knowledge if they continued the appeal.

Yeah, why on earth wouldn't they want that?

As are the assumptions about the state of medical knowledge in an African country. The HCPs may be overworked and operating in conditions that are not ideal, they may not have the equipment, or access to drugs they need for their patients, but they are trained. And they have the internet. They go on seminars both real and online, share information just like healthcare professionals worldwide.

DSDs are much more common in the global south than in the gn. They are known about in some communities outside the healthcare profession.

Edited

Imo it being an uber-patriarchal country is more important - anything other than obvious male being considered "less than", and therefore must be female.

heathspeedwell · 11/08/2024 10:23

@Iwasafool we heard all this emotive stuff about Caster Semenya. Men tried to make us feel sorry for him because we were told he thought he was a woman.

But the colloquial name for 46 XY 5ard is 'penis at 12'. Men born with this DSD typically go through male puberty and at that point their voices break and they grow an Adam's apple.

There are photos of Semenya aged 15 at a swimming event wearing just trunks. No 15 year old girl would just wear trunks around boys. I would bet my house that he knew he was male since puberty - if not before that.

So far we have less information about Khelif, but the fact he was discovered by a coach in his late teens when he was playing football with other boys does point to him having already realised he wasn't a girl at that point. These coaches tell the boys that they can live how they want but they just have to pretend to be a woman on the race track and in front of journalists.

Semenya often forgets he's pretending to be a woman in front of journalists and calls women they and them. Here's an example:

They've both been beaten by women so not a given they will win and I haven't heard of any boxers having their heads boxed off.

It might be difficult if you are poor, you are a professional boxer and that puts food on the table.

People go through all kinds of tough things in life. Sporting careers end for all kinds of reasons - injury, illness, accidents.

Absolutely nothing you have posted justifies Khelif continuing to beat up women knowing he is a man. It's about basic decency and consideration for the welfare of others.

BeyondOlympicLevelProcrastinator · 11/08/2024 10:17

I imagine I might continue to "live as a woman" - who knows

I doubt I'd compete in the olympics, knowing that my taking part was at least controversial, if not outright cheating. Because then my medical condition would be dissected, and the chance of me hiding under the radar in normal life is ruined.

Horrific or not,he knows he's a bloke and if he's determined to carry on boxing he can climb into the ring with other blokes.

He'd lose against men though.

dementedpixie · 11/08/2024 10:17

So he didn't get breasts, didn't menstruate, likely had some genital growth at puberty and still thought he was female? I very much doubt it.

All countries have a responsibility to their own athletes. If they look likely to progress to the international level, then good procedures talking about how there is a test, how the test works, why the test is necessary and how it's possible the result might not come back with 'the right result' should be tackled. The IOC should set this out as basic good practice.

As part of that, before you even get to that stage, questions about whether you are presenting as a female or whether there may be a potential problem and chance such a test might show an unexpected result.

I think my point is it's disengenous to say that an XY result will come as a complete shock without any prior indications.

Iwasafool · 11/08/2024 10:04

Why? Generally we are told, over and over again, if you have a penis you are male. With some of these conditions there isn't a penis so by that logic they aren't men or at least they probably have no reason to think they are men.

It must be pretty bloody horrific to find this out when you are an adult.

Horrific or not,he knows he's a bloke and if he's determined to carry on boxing he can climb into the ring with other blokes.

Khelif needs to sue the IBA, as it's their tests that have caused the outrage.

It's an outrage which is justified if the tests are correct, because men with DSDs shouldn't be participating in women's sports, even if they were misidentified as female at birth. But, conversely, if the tests are inaccurate, then the IBA have caused a woman to be harassed and accused of being male when she's not.

People shouldn't be punished for saying that Khelif (or Lin Yu-ting) shouldn't be in women's sports when a major sporting body has publicly said that they're ineligible due to their sex. Rather than going after those people, Khelif needs to go after the IBA. Maybe she could... I dunno, do a new test to clear things up and prove them wrong?

Yes, this would be the most logical thing to do although IBC believed it was a safety issue (rather borne out by events) so had to speak up.

But they both were given a chance to appeal and didn't, why not? I would imagine this might undermine any legal claim as they didn't take the route to appeal offered at he time.

Unless of course this is actually just riding a wave of power to punch down on women (see my prediction above).

That puts a gigantic stop to my sympathy for IK. The coaches knew, they selected, IK would have known.

How would you feel if you have been brought up as female, always thought you were female, didn't have male genitalia and someone did a test (no one seems to have said what the test was and what it showed) and told you that you were male. Would you suddenly think Oh yes I'm a man or would you still think you were a woman.
