What is a woman?

I just wanted to clarify what everyone thought this meant given recent events at the olympics.

A person born with a uterus and vagina, raised female, with boobs and has periods and the ability to carry and birth a child is not a woman?

I wholeheartedly agree that if khelif is male she shouldn't be punching females in the face for sport.

But I don't think she is male. And have not seen any evidence otherwise.

You know you can't just publish other people's private medical information without their consent, right?

I find those who make negative generalisations and sometimes abusive statements towards the group who disagree with male people with pubertal advantage being allowed to access female sports categories tend to either up end admitting or showing they have no understanding of sport. They may even have negative opinions about competitive sport. Else they understand sports and agree male people with male advantage should not be in the female category, but they want to virtual signal their support of people’s identities. They wish to shape the discussion into fitting their personal opinion of what kindness looks like.

It never surprises me that the kindness centres vulnerable male people over female people as a collective though.

Truth is you have no proof Khelif is male. Else you would produce it and you have not.

Where is your evidence of the coach and the DSDs which you were going on about?

It's her word against the IBA. And she is accused of lying. And the IBA is a banned governing body.

She is also, on this thread, accused of being a man because she 'looks like a man'.

She has also, on this thread, been accused of being a man because 'in Muslim countries she would have been married by now' and therefore couldn't possibly have been a boxer or have lived her life as a female.

It's mob mentality. There's something despicable and un feminist about it, racial undertones, and I would urge you to read up about micro aggressions to women of the Global South if you are so very interested in evidence.

If the test results obtained by the IBA were not considered trustworthy enough by the IOC, why did the IOC not run their own tests?

There’s been a few threads recently where people have arrived with very strong opinions, declared everyone who disagrees with them is stupid and ignorant and needs to educate themselves, and then proceeds to demonstrate they’ve got absolutely nothing to back up their opinion, done not even the teeniest amount of background reading, paid attention to any opinion they disagree with.

Whereas the people with the other opinion demonstrate that they are not only well read on their own opinion, but have paid close attention to other opinions in order to be sure they understand the evidence on both sides. But they are considered the ignorant baying mob.

Now, there may be an ignorant baying mob out there, wanting to hound Imane out of the Olympics. I haven’t seen it though. Only extremely well read people who don’t believe Imane should box women, and an ignorant mob who bay that she should.

OP might want to be very careful about accusing other people of "lying"

this, there seems to be all this evidence that the boxer in question in actually female with absolutely no evidence ever produced (on numerous threads)

Several instances in this thread accusing khelif of lying, read my post properly.

Given, to my knowledge, the boxer in question has not claimed (and still less been proven) to have a fully functional female reproductive system, OP might want to be very careful about accusing other people of "lying".

Shortshriftandlethal · 11/08/2024 13:51

I think the truth of the matter is that it is trans allies and gender true believers who are most keen to deny the reality of DSDs and the fact that they are disorders of either male or female development.

If someone who was mistakenly recorded as female at birth and who has been socialised as a girl in the early years (until the evidence of puberty became glaringly clear) can be excluded from the female category - then surely so will all male people who claim female identities.

We all knew it was going to be children ( puberty blockers) and sport that brought the house down......and so it has come to pass.

The IOC wanted to see just how far they could push the boundaries in deciding to make boxing the test case.

Completely agree. Yet when we have in front of us a woman who is saying she is and has those things we have become a despicable baying mob telling her she is lying, with no plausible evidence of the lie occurring. Some of us even holding up pictures saying "look HE looks like a man and therefore HE is a man"

I'm simply saying that is not right.

We can argue until blue in face about testosterone levels and share meta analyses but they baying mob mentality here is the thing I am disappointed with.

Nowhere has Khelif claimed possession of a womb and ovaries.

I think you are talking about twitter...not mumsnet, when you refer to a "baying mob"

So many people go to twitter to enegage in discussion - but the nature of the paltform does not encourage thoughtful discussion.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 11/08/2024 13:35

Ovotesticular syndrome: about 50% of people with this (incredibly rare condition) produce eggs. Only 2 have ever been found who produce sperm (ans only 1 of those actually confirmed as fertile) - and neither of those also produced eggs.

No human hermaphrodites.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 11/08/2024 13:31

therefore seems to be arguing that the male (with DSD) boxers don't actually have DSD

Despite both the Olympic committee and a medical expert on the coaching team of one of the boxers both confirming DSD.

Superlambaanana · 11/08/2024 13:05

What a bizarre thread. OP seems to accept the biological definition of a woman, so therefore seems to be arguing that the male (with DSD) boxers don't actually have DSD and are biological women, perhaps just with high testosterone levels, possibly because they are pregnant (because is pregnant and that creates higher testosterone levels). Really bizarre line of logic based on zero evidence or reference to the widespread coverage which has confirmed DSD. Or does OP think they are women with DSD? Why would anyone bother to mention the DSD if they were biological women?

Gametes are reproductive cells, also known as sex cells, found in animals and plants. In animals, female gametes are called ova or egg cells, and male gametes are called sperm.

True. Eggs still aren't kept in the uterus.....

Op it isn't just a baying mob. There's lots of evidence, to at least prompt an investigation. You'd fail as a lawyer.

I doubt they are aiming for 'lawyer'. I would think 'influencer' is more their aim. Maybe even 'shock jock' opinion piece media pundit.

Helleofabore · 11/08/2024 12:20

Helleofabore · 11/08/2024 12:04

No person in the history of humankind has produced both sperm and ova. The presence of a fully formed and function uterus has been documented in male people, ie. those who have a XY genotype. One could argue though that they are still genotypically male. It did not make their genotype female.

In fact, with the accurate testing available, I believe that even those with ovotestes can be reliably categorised as either male or female.

Helleofabore · 11/08/2024 12:18

Has 'plausible' now got a new meaning too? Or was that meant to be 'irrefutable evidence that involves divulging an athlete's private information that the athlete has explicitly and rightfully, refused to allow to be shared'?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/08/2024 12:16

It is endless outpourings of emoting though, for the male athletes. But ... yeah.... I am sure that feels good.

It's very much like the endless outpouring of emoting for "trans women", while no one gives a shit about women.

Khelif's trainer announced that Khelif has a chromosome abnormality and hormonal problems. He also stated that, since being disqualified in the 2023 World Championships (for having an XY karyotype), Khelif has been on a testosterone suppression regime.

What sort of female has XY chromosomes and needs to pharmaceutically lower testosterone?

Please consider the evidence.

Sadly zib we can all keep repeating it, but it matters not to a person determined to portray others as hateful for their own personal needs.

Helleofabore · 11/08/2024 12:14

So it comes down to:

One group believes the evidence as presented by the IBA rather than from a person who stands to gain substantially from denying the tests.

One group choosing to believe two people (because everyone seems to forget Lin) who deny the tests because one of those people has captured attention with their history.

But the group choosing to believe the tests and science are the ones being called names and vilified. By those claiming to be on the right side of history, the morally superior side etc. Yet the reality is, that group also never mentions the impact on the female athletes at all. It is endless outpourings of emoting though, for the male athletes. But ... yeah.... I am sure that feels good.

AlisonDonut · 11/08/2024 12:14

Baying mob [well, women typing words] versus males punching women in the face. And in the back of the head whilst their necks are on the ropes.

If he was an actual woman nobody would give two shiny shits about his rights to punch people.
