olympic car crash

I thought after the WPATH debacle that would blow the lid off, once and for all, gender woo having any further influence in medical matters. Do we think the IOC will simply try to style this out with "nothing to see here" or will radical change be a result? No idea myself as there seems to be still far too many nutters in positions of power.

See former E German athletes & Flo-Jo, who died v young. Why would apparently healthy, super fit women drop dead of heart problems?

This is off topic but I thought Flo-Jo died from an epileptic seizure caused by a brain abnormality.Confused

why? Because she was doped up to the eyeballs for at least part her running career. Can I prove this? No. However, consider the following. Her record of 10.49 was set 36 years ago-since then no one has come even close to that time. The only records of similar longevity and untouchability are from East German athletes known to have been doped by the state-i.e. the 1983 800 meters of Kratochvilova. Her progress was suspiciously meteoric, being a fairly average (within elite circles) runner 2 years before these records. In 1989 the IOC announced that out of competition drug testing (i.e. anywhere, anytime, without prior notice) was from now on the rule. When does Flo jo decide to retire? two weeks after than. At least one sprinter refused the offer of training with Flo jo's coach, Bob Kersee, due to persistent rumours about his promotion of drugs. Her early death is just the icing on the cake.

What hasn't really been discussed, is that if it's done by passport, then any 'transwoman' could be boxing women.

Yes, agree that is the elephant in the room here.

GreenUp · 05/08/2024 16:44

Does anyone know from the IOC framework, is there a testosterone upper limit for the boxing categories? Or is it literally just what it says in your passport?

Passport, according to Mark Adams.

"Well we know that Caster Semanya didn't care in the least about being a cheat. He has made a career out of being a "female" athlete, and even writing about his life."

Indeed. And doesn't it say so much about his character? I wonder what his children will think of him when they're old enough to understand what he did.

To be frank, Semenya always comes across as really arrogant and entitled.

kiterunning · 05/08/2024 19:39

Seb!

kiterunning · 05/08/2024 19:39

The Paris Olympics will always be remembered for this.
Hopefully Sen Coe will be in place soon.

What annoys me about the whole thing is that people are arguing left right and centre about are they a woman or not but the whole ‘why do we actually segregate by sex ‘in the first place has been completely lost now. All the arguments are now about fairness to the individual competitors affected rather than fairness to the contest as a whole. Until they start at the top and start with the question ‘what is the point of this specific category and how do we ensure that category is fair then all it is is just lots of people arguing without any evidence. The IOC should have to answer that question before they answer anything else

I suspect a great many people I personally know and by extension quite a few others have forgotten that men as a class really are faster and stronger than women as a class and by quite a bit, even among elite athletes. They see the existence of women's sports as about adjusting mental attitudes toward women participating than being about physiological needs. Solve the problem of women not feeling allowed to participate and then you can just say, all right, that's done, now we can be "inclusive." Sometime in the '90s it become verboten to point out that men and women were physically different, because at least in the US it was seen as conceding to the right.

But I guess if they can get people to shut up about this one then it'll truly be anything goes.

Exactly. It's like the breastfeeding man, as a trope.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/08/2024 19:09

nothing will change during these games-that would be the equivalent of erecting a ten foot high pink neon sign over the Eiffel Tower saying "we are batshit mentalists who dont know our arse from our elbow".

That would make a spectacular closing ceremony!

I was surprised to discover Semenya admitted to having testicles last year. Yet apparently plenty of people still think he's female.

Lol that headline. We're through the looking glass.
I saw a story recently about Semenya and his partner expecting a child, which managed to say nothing at all as one might see in an article about a lesbian or gay couple, as to how the child was conceived. Not that I'm saying it's everyone's business, just interesting to note the vagueness and omission.

LaeralSilverhand · 05/08/2024 18:52

The IOC administering the boxing directly is a temporary measure. Hopefully the IBA gets its house in order in time for the next Olympics cycle.

One thing to bear in mind is that the two boxers at the heart of this debacle remain banned outside of the Olympics, so it’s hard to see how they would qualify for Los Angeles, even if the sport is still being administered by the IOC then.

Martina Navratilova had her T level tested as part of her tv program re trans sportspeople. Her level was comfortably within normal range (under 2nm per litre).

Once women go over 2, we exhibit a range of health problems. Hardly conducive to elite sports. Unless we’re talking about the other type of women’s bodies who aren’t affected by high T levels.

FiveFoxes · 05/08/2024 18:37

An interesting sidenote is the use of head protectors in boxing. These have been removed for men boxing as apparently research showed they could increase the risk of concussion.

Women still wear headguards ... Because no research has been done .

GCITC · 05/08/2024 18:28

They will simply wash their hands of it when they find a federation to take over the running of the boxing.

GnomeDePlume · 05/08/2024 18:25

Being cynical I do wonder if IOC has allowed this to happen so that boxing can be removed from the Olympics.

I think it's very hard to comprehend how someone could be such a cheat in sport, especially at the Olympics. Do they not understand that this effectively negates any medal they win?

Well we know that Caster Semanya didn't care in the least about being a cheat. He has made a career out of being a "female" athlete, and even writing about his life.

You just wait for the media to successfully vociferously and confusedly insist that you're just a misunderstood woman, and then bide your time until you can say whatever and it won't matter if anyone challenges you, which they won't bother because "Why speak up now when it's been so long?"

annejumps · 05/08/2024 18:21

1apenny2apenny · 05/08/2024 17:12

There was a graph on the other thread showing testosterone levels of men and women. I don't doubt that many women in these sports are at the higher end for T. That however is very different to men's levels.

Perhaps all the women should have a 'sex' test and testosterone test and publish their results. It's very telling that neither athlete will consent to the results being published nor to their own testing. We all know why.

I think it's very hard to comprehend how someone could be such a cheat in sport, especially at the Olympics. Do they not understand that this effectively negates any medal they win? But then I suppose it's also hard to comprehend how someone can think having an 'F' in your passport makes you a woman. I mean doesn't only cost a fiver to get that in the uk? Self id through the back door.

Male entitlement and motivated reasoning, I suppose.

It absolutely blows my mind that the one sport among All Possible Sports which was the hill that IOC chose to die on was boxing.

But I guess if they can get people to shut up about this one then it'll truly be anything goes.

That was the self admitted strategy with male rapists and murderers in women's prisons if I recall. The started there deliberately on the basis of if this is accepted then it's an open door to any other incursion.

I think, if you'll pardon the pun, that the IOC have now boxed themselves into such a tight corner that they clearly feel they have no option but to bluster and bully it out.

I also think they wouldn't have had a cat in hell's chance of getting away with it if (with one or two honourable exceptions) the mainstream media had the will and the gumption to do their job.
