I rose to it today. Couldn't help myself. Challenged a couple of folk on Twitter who were responding positively to my batshit TRA MPs statement on Twitter about the Olympic boxing business. I'm always polite. I ask questions and challenge gently here and there, but good god they always get abusive. I never learn.

Are memes allowed here?

One man rapes girls, one man hits women for a living, don’t see the joke. Why do you think one of these things is ok?

eatfigs · 09/08/2024 15:48

Is it just me or does the online abuse seem even stronger than usual on this topic?

I've also been trying to calmly fact check some of the false information I've seen on social media, posting links to sources, asking polite questions - and it seems like it just immediately triggers so many of these people to invective.

Did you miss all the numerous threads on mumsnet re Van De Velde?

Feels like voluntary inattentional blindness to have missed them but that can be important to people who need to sustain their personal cognitive biases.

You don’t appear to be on the dutch rapist thread…

Almost like some posters don't actually care about WAG unless they are the XY sort.

I know I've seen other posters from this thread on the rapist thread. I know I was there. Because WAG's safety is actually important to me.

Just googled the definition of transgender and the first one to come up is "people whose gender identity is different from the gender they were thought to be at birth"

I dont actually know the gender identity of the 2 boxers but they are presumably identifying as female, at least until their boxing career is over. So they are not transgender but they are males who knew when they went through male puberty that the sex they were assigned at birth was wrong. They also know that their male puberty gives them unfair advantage over women boxers so they are cheats.

Imane was not "born female", Imane was incorrectly assigned female at birth and Imane knows that. Calling Imane "male" is factually correct and the truth is not defamatory.

Havent seen "hate" for the boxers - quite a bit of sympathy for their DSD but a lot of dislike for cheats.

ArabellaScott · 08/08/2024 16:11

If anyone wants to take action on Van de Velde, you can still write to the

NOCNSF.

https://nocnsf.nl/

It may be worth also writing to the Dutch government, and/or the tourist board, to express how you feel about that country putting a child rapist forward for the Olympics.

https://www.holland.com/global/tourism

https://www.netherlandsandyou.nl/web/united-kingdom/about-us/contact-embassy-london

If you would prefer to just use some shitty meme to try and sneer at women, rather than actually doing something to help, then in my view you are dishonouring the victim of this horrible crime, and I will not share what I think of that course of action.

If JK Rowling can speak her piece so can everyone else. She isn't the only one with an opinion.

Where did i say you weren’t allowed your opinion?

i asked were you ever ashamed of your posts, i have seen many posts in here that i disagree with but those posters aren’t unnecessarily mean

ApocalipstickNow · 08/08/2024 13:44

Yeah it’s really weird my sjw Dutch friend has said NOTHING about his fellow country man raping a child. Go bros!*

Maybe ask why there’s so few men on SM criticising a rapist but so many angry at women atheletes.

Maybe pop over the rapist thread, Chris I’m sure we’re all clamouring for your input 🙄

*clearly I’m not meaning Matt, Luke and Ken here.

So firstly, whether they are a "biological woman" is exactly the thing in dispute.

Secondly, the "why aren't you making a fuss about this other thing" approach, I probably wouldn't say it's always wrong to use that, but it's hardly a strong line of argument when it's (a) a change of subject, and (b) appears to function as an ad hom attack on the motivation of the person; but questionable motivations or inconsistency (even when real) don't show claims or arguments to be wrong in any straightforward easy way.

Plus we actually ARE "making a fuss" about the other thing.

Also Khelif isn't a biological woman, but that's by the by. But that is bizarrely and irrelevantly shoehorned in there as if a biological woman would never be hated. Try Rose West.

SilenceInside · 08/08/2024 12:03

What hate? No one here has said they hate this boxer.

And you have clearly missed the long running thread here about that unpleasant specimen of a beach volleyball player.

Its only defamatory if it's not true.

Nonetheless, a refusal to acknowledge open truths was behind Liberace's successful libel action. I've no idea if the law has moved on in all jurisdictions since then…

I don't support what JKR and others said although I do agree that Khelif and the other boxer should not be competing.

But there is something deeply unsettling and unsavoury about a male albeit one raised as a female punching a woman on live tv as sport. It's wrong @Christinapple and hearing people attempt to justify it for any reason is wrong.

Anyone with a brain on either side of the trans debate should be calling for the IOC to get a hold of this issue and put a stop to men competing with women in boxing. But those welded to the gender woo woo won't do this because they know that starting with boxing the whole house of cards will fall. So instead they double down and call the terfs mean and nasty names rather than admit they are wrong. Can you hear my blood boiling Grin

The IOC want this, so they won't put a stop to it. Men in women's boxing is a feature, not a bug.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/08/2024 11:06

I highly doubt Khelif will be suing anyone.

Ms Rowling is outright calling Imane a "male" and using male pronouns for her, and saying she is "enjoying the distress of a woman who was punched". I'm not a lawyer but some might potentially see all that as defamatory.

And yes, just to add it's the Olympic boxing. Competitors will punch each other (that's the whole point), punches will come hard (it's Olympic standard, best of the best), and I'm sure literally every competitor there has dreams to win a medal and everyone who doesn't earn one is devastated.

If it makes anyone feel any better the opponent who cried was given $50,000 in consolation and also has a crowdfunder up.

I don't support what JKR and others said although I do agree that Khelif and the other boxer should not be competing.

An update from earlier.

Boston Globe have apologised for describing Imane Khelif as transgender in print, and for neglecting to note she was born female.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/the-boston-globe-apologized-for-the-significant-error-of-calling-imane-khelif-transgender/ar-AA1ogAnj

Still waiting for an apology from Ms Rowling...

The irony is that if she does have a male DSD she wasn't born female at all but assigned female at birth. This wouldn't have been obvious - she may have appeared female but by puberty it would be beyond doubt that she was not.

"No one who is GC said the boxer is trans."

The Boston Globe, "New England's leading source for breaking news and analysis", did in print. Unless a grovelling apology and correction comes soon from them they'll be some legal trouble in store.

Can't quote your comment above about transphobia hurting all women but I wanted to say no, what hurts all women is the notion that men who think they are women (and that is their own opinion/delusion) occupying female spaces literally and otherwise. I am really sorry to say this but any woman who doesn't see that elevating "gender" above sex is not only dumb in the style of turkeys voting for Christmas but is complicit in the harm being done to women and girls. Bottom line what does a man know about what it is to be a woman? Nothing. Let's not change the world on the basis of what a few men think they feel.

@Immemorialelms

"Sex is a complicated thing involving chromosomes hormones epigenetics and physical organs - it is genuinely sometimes possible to question the binary, who knew?"

This is inaccurate and misleading. Humans beings are differentiated by sex for reproductive functions. People with DSDs are male or female based on whether they have XX or XY chromosomes. However, they are knocked from the standard developmental pathway because of genetic defects. In all cases, they are infertile as a result of these defects. This includes Swyers (infertile men) XX sry (infertile women) and the male conditions involving androgen insensitivity.

I think you also asserted that the existence of these conditions proves that sex exists on a spectrum. This is demonstrably not true, because sex is about reproduction of the species, and as I've already pointed out, people with DSDs are ALWAYS infertile.

From what I am reading, sex is defined by which reproductive system someone has, and whether it could potentially produce male gametes or female gametes.

So people with DSDs are male or female based on whether they have male or female reproductive organs, regardless of whether they are fully functional or not. Their sex isn’t based on their chromosomes.

Someone with Swyer syndrome is female, because they have internal female reproductive organs, with non-functional ovaries. So they’re women, even though they have XY chromosomes.

https://medlineplus.gov/genetics/condition/swyer-syndrome/

I agree that the existence of DSD conditions don’t mean that sex is a spectrum. None of them are an extra sex.

Swyer syndrome: MedlinePlus Genetics

Swyer syndrome is a condition that affects sex development. Explore symptoms, inheritance, genetics of this condition.

Only if it's untrue. Have you seen the footage of they whooping and chest beating?

What about the distress of the women them has beaten up? Don't the count for anything at all, in your reality? Angela Carini only took two punches and her face was completely messed up, on both sides. I found that pretty shocking, she looked like she'd been in a hard ten rounder.

TWO punches, only two. I can't recall seeing anything like that before.

If they've only recently discovered they're really male then it's sad for them personally if they can't compete. But this sort of thing happens all the time: sportspeople break bones or discover a heart condition, and their careers are over.

How very well said.
