I hardly need to say which demographic was pushed to the forefront of this, right? I don't think I've ever seen the view that 'cross-dressing men are the very best of us [and most obviously of all better than the boring old type of woman]' being pushed quite so hard?

As I said where were all the female transvestites dressed up as men? They were non existent.. The men wouldn't have the piss taken out of the by us sub species...

ResisterOfTwaddleRex · 28/07/2024 21:31

The idea that someone could have reached the giddy heights of orchestrating an Olympics ceremony and somehow doesn't see part of it mock the last supper lacks any and all credibility. They intended to cause widespread offence but were so up themselves, they didn't reckon on the backlash. Tough tits. FAFO.

Can I just get this off my chest? I hate drag. It manages to be disgusting and insulting to women without even having the redeeming factor of being funny.

Me too.

It's just as bad as black face and worse than most things that get criticised as cultural appropriation.

It should be just as unacceptable as these things.

Appalonia · 28/07/2024 21:02

Sorry posted twice by mistake!

Appalonia · 28/07/2024 21:01

It made me appreciate just how good the British ceremony was. This was such a wasted opportunity. Paris is a beautiful city and France has such an incredible cultural history to draw on. What about the beautiful paintings of an artist like Monet, Manet, Pisarro, Toulouse Lautrec ( sp ) being celebrated? The fabulous fashion designers? p

Celine Dionne was fantastic but there are great French singers that could have been show cased. Lara Fabian for example.

PepeParapluie · 28/07/2024 20:57

I thought that mocking the last supper (even if the resemblance was unintentional, I don’t believe no one spotted it in any rehearsals - it’s a bloody famous painting!) was awful. I don’t like drag, but even if it hadn’t been drag queens doing the mocking, it would still have been wrong in my book.

I don’t think religion should be exempt from mockery, and in a world with free speech, we should be able to joke about religion. It’s not poking fun at religion in and of itself that was bad for me (even combined with drag queens doing the mocking). But for me, the Olympics is about the world coming together, symbolically setting aside political or religious differences for the purposes of this competition.

While France is secular, and many formerly Christian majority countries are no longer as religious, there are plenty of people around the world for whom Christianity is important.

The opening ceremony, with the eyes of the world watching, should be about finding common ground or sharing the culture or history of the host country in order to welcome the world… it’s not a time for divisive satire or alienating huge swathes of the worlds population. Mock religion, fine, but the olympics is not the time or place.

They've had to issue a non apology

Plainly they did intend to mock the last supper. They're only sorry it caused a diplomatic incident.

I wasn't going to watch it until I read this thread, so watched it yesterday to see what everyone was on about...

My god, what a mish mash! And so much nicked from other nations - Lady Gaga, Minions, loads of British dance music. Quite a bit of naff stuff, the can can was out of synch... What the hell was the little girl doing at Dionysus' "sexy party" (thankfully her eyes were averted a lot of the time!).

Totally agree that the best bits were La Marseillaise sung by Axelle Saint-Cirel with the female statue unveiling and Sequana on her horse. I also liked the male ballet dancer on the roof towards the beginning.

Realduchymarmalade · 28/07/2024 20:04

It was bloody vile. I felt revolted and turned it off. So sickening to think of all the innocent young eyes that had to see that bunch of talentless deviants. And of course they had to flaunt that they had managed to procure a child from somewhere, no doubt it’s traumatised from being submerged in such a grotesque nightmare.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/07/2024 20:02

I thought the blue bloke was the Dionysus one?

Creepingivy · 28/07/2024 19:37

Isn't it strange that we were not subjected to any female transvestites.. I didn't spot one woman dressed up & lolloping about as a man..
The Olympic ceremony was all about men exerting their dominance over women & showing the world they make better women that females.. Why was there no woman parading as a man in the fashion show? Last supper scene??

'reminiscent of '. I thought they tweeted at the time it was Dionysus and have since apologised for the resemblance to the Last Supper. There weren't even the right number of people.

The resemblance and allusion is clear.

What did they think people watching would think it was of?

Very much a curate's egg, but the good bits were really good. We (the ceremony and I) got off on the wrong foot because

  1. the Zidane bit. I love Zidane, he is gorgeous and a wonderful footballer, but the look of that section was a bit derivative.
  2. the whole beginning section was disjointed. I was sort of waiting for the show to start until the Lady Gaga performance, which was when I realised that it had!

The Dionysus tableau was mistakenly thought to be a parody of the Last Supper. It was apparently a reference to, or a representation of, Dionysus (and his drag pals). Fair enough, but we needed to be told what we were looking at and what the connection to Paris (of the Iliad, after whom Paris is named) is. Because not many people know that Paris is named after the mythological Paris, and even fewer know of a connection between Dionysus and Paris. I suspect that it was intentionally as close to the Last Supper as they dared, and the supposed Dionysus inspiration is for plausible deniability. Because there are many ways they could have portrayed Dionysus that didn't look like a well-known religiously inspired painting. Indeed they could have portrayed Paris himself.

Presenting men as women gave me the rage. especially as there seemed to be a lot more men in the show anyway, even without that. Fashion show - the clothes should be the stars. Always.

Anyhoo, I rewatched today.

For balance:
It was an original idea to use the Seine and its bridges as the focus. I understood it better, though some performances would have been better in a stadium.
I think I would have preferred to see the whole show in one go, rather than chopped up with the athletes' parade. Short-changed both. They probably intended to speed up the pace, but ironically it slowed it down.
I was looking for a narrative through line but on second viewing, I think perhaps I was being unfair - the stated themes were enough. Many of the different installations and sequences were meaningful (on second viewing) and beautiful in themselves, overall visually it was stunning. The sound was not fab for the music sections except for the classical music.

It was a Danny Boyle type ceremony but gallicised and queered up. The frenchifying added beauty and sophistication but the pointless queering detracted from it.
There was too much focus on creating an effect rather than conveying a meaning at times.
The rendition of the Marseillaise by the mezzo (what an exquisite voice!) and the women's statues section was moving and beautiful because it was all real. Real struggles, real achievements, real women Simply done. Substance. Best part, IMO.
Some of the humour was fun, some of it missed by a mile. But in essence it was a great show. So I can understand media types raving about it AND the general public disliking or being offended by parts of it.

And a big cheer for the performers and athletes doing their stuff in the rain. Really rotten luck with the weather but they were very stoic and mostly they sparkled regardless!

Edited to add: The Horse. The HORSE!!!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 28/07/2024 13:27

Thé organisers have taken down the video of the ceremony. Too late, in the internet age.

I wonder if there is a bit of rethinking going on about the closing do?

Apparently, hoisting your flag upside down is a recognised military sign that you are in extreme distress and danger, and appealing for aid. So perhaps it wasn’t a mistake, after all.

Not keen on the drag last supper bit. Disgusting. Why include that. Trans in sports shouldn't be encouraged. The whole thing was so woke. Shame such a thing is so dominant for the last few years. Just have the opening ceremony and let's get on with the sports.

Snowypeaks · 28/07/2024 10:19

Sounds about right. I love Paris, love France and most things french but the thing I do not love - the misogyny - was very much front and centre.

Mumofhumansandcats · 28/07/2024 09:46

It was mostly a train wreck with some good bits & a few really good bits ... I'd imagine being there would have been pretty boring and wet..

If they were trying to reflect France I now think French men are all effeminate or go around in dresses, their dress sense is awful, they celebrate & vilify dead women, do not respect the women of today, 80% of the population are Same sex attracted, they do not have non slip surfaces, their weather is just as rubbish as the UK, & they have no organisational skills..

Loved the beginning with the footballer & kids on the train.. then it got weird with a threesome (why) the boat idea was good but you couldn't get a good look at the athletes or countries, lady gaga.. I actually had no idea who she was & I'm sure a French singer would have been better, i also thought that they'd throw a man during the celebration of famous dead French women, I only saw two disabled people in the whole thing (aside from the torch bearing athletes), the whole fashion show I don't even know where to start I think it's all been said, but why was this literally 1/3 of the event? 🤔 who thought a naked blue Smurf was a good idea? The horse rider on the river was amazing.. just went on a bit too long, 4 top sports stars on a boat in the rain with no idea where they were going was hilarious, the other torch bearers didn't have the torch long enough for the commentators to do them Justice, the balloon with the flame looks stunning.. would love to have seen this not in the rain.. Celine Dion.. legend and should have done a few numbers.. overall a 4/10... French people waited 100 years for this & I'm sure the majority will be quite embarrassed as to what was produced for the budget!

I think the general reaction from the public was that it was awful, but the media keep telling us it was "spectator" and "wowed" people. You can see how we live in an age where the media just lie to the public, and pretend that public opinion is very different to the reality.

Hit the nail on the head there. Most people are too blinkered to see it though.
