A feminist I used to really admire, deciding pussy grabbing, porn loving, convicted felon Trump and his misogynistic, fickle, anti abortion, running mate Vance are the best choice for American women.

https://x.com/MeghanEMurphy/status/1814817323754381763

Feminists/'feminist' men keep insisting to me that @JDVance1 is a misogynist who wants to 'take away women's rights' yet Trump/Vance are the only choice if we wish to restore women's sex-based rights in America (never mind the fact that Vance is anti-p*rn). I am not a fan of letting the government have any say over what women do with their bodies, but 'abortion rights' have for decades been used as a pawn in political games, and women keep letting themselves be played.

Voting Democrat solely because they'll let you have an abortion while they allow all the rest of our sex-based rights to be destroyed seems unwise to me. Women need to take their bodily autonomy into their own hands imo — this means we need to learn about and educate other women about their bodies and reproductive system, so we aren't relying on the government to dole out hormonal birth control (which is HORRIBLE for us) and dictate our reproductive choices. It's far from an ideal situation, but I resent being told I must vote for a party that can't even define the word 'woman' because they'll allow women to have abortions. That gives me the icks and should give you the icks as well.

I don't believe we should be handing over our power to governments, and the more we understand about our own bodies, the power of food/herbal medicine, the less we need to rely on the state or the medical establishment to allow us bodily autonomy and pretend to be invested in our health and wellbeing.

I do think we should fight against anyone/any laws that tell us what we may or may not do with our bodies, but the Democrats are not the party of body sovereignty either, so I'm not sure why women give them that credit.

I'm not sure what's going on with her but this is a huge shock. Very glad I'm not in the States right now.

People generally don't vote, or not vote, for people because of their personal stuff. There are some notable exceptions. But in general they vote for whomever they see moving the country is a better direction than the other guy.

People will vote for Trump even if they thought he might have a personally shit attitude to women. They'd have done the same for Biden, or Bill Clinton, or whomever. They take the choices on offer and make the best of it.

Both the Democrats and the Republicans have played voters on abortion issues for years. Many have had enough, I think. Abortion is in the hands of the states now which takes it out of the realm of the presidential election, and that may be no bad thing. It could potentially even be a gift to the Democrats, if they don't want to look the horse in the mouth - they have lost some of their traditional voting base over the years because of it. They now have the chance to focus on other things and win those people back. (Do I think they will do this - unlikely. They seem determined to make winning as difficult for themselves as possible.)

As for this fucking stupid idea that there can only be one obvious choice for anyone nice. There are all kinds of reasons people of the traditional left might support Trump. After the union busting of Obama, the fact that Trump has chosen a VP with a significant interest in union rights makes one things clear - on economic issues it very much looks like the Democrats are pretty much the same big business uber-capitalists they always were, but the Trump Republicans seem to be going after something like the ground the parties of the left used to. No surprise that might appeal to people on the left.

Simply not true for all his faults Biden has been much better.
For starters the convenient memory holing of Trump inheriting a healthier and growing economy from Obama after the global impact of the crash that Bushs GOP inflicted on all of us drives me nuts.
And how anyone who claims to be a feminist a belief system that is fundamentally about the democratic principle of fairness can root for a man who called for insurrection in the face of the democratic process, making him no better than Putin, and expect us to believe you, is quite some reach.

You do realise when I say 'some Americans' I don't mean me?

You do know that's how words work? Don't ever call me American. I'm Canadian and think most Americans are Batshit. But we are talking about their opinions. And they are the ones voting.

You get that right?

AlisonDonut · 22/07/2024 22:08

It is true when it says 'legal' it means 'legal at any time'.

Jesus wept. You don't understand what you are talking about and just Google something and post a link and hope everyone ignores it.

Add the religious element to the mix and it is a powder keg of a debate.

And then add guns. It's polarised alright.

Not strictly true that, is it

You do know that he has already been president and many Americans don't think he did a bad job? Certainly not as bad as Biden.

The issue of abortion is not the same as here, mainly due to the all or nothing approach - the pro abortion activists are pro up to birth, which is obviously completely different to the UK abortion law.

I haven't followed this debate in the US in any detail, but I wasn't aware this is what the pro abortion activists in the US were asking for. Are none of them looking for a reasonable solution like we have in the UK (and the rest of Europe, I think)?

I'm not surprised the debate is so polarised if the two options are no abortions at all or abortion up to full term.

Nobody can hold a UK lens over any of this, this is a uniquely USA issue.

The vote is about looking at the policies and adding up which make a difference to you. That's the point of democracy.

Are we to now have thread after thread of 'women who Cassie/Adam doesn't agree with' with stupid Confused faces making out as if their words are 'weird'?

This is a perfectly reasonable decision. Trump is simply the least worst option. This is completely different to the best option. If you don't understand that, maybe discussing USA politics isn't in your wheelhouse.

I have heard many reports that Canada is on the turn, and its very likely Trudeau will head the way of Nicola Sturgeon.
The next election is October next year.

Fingers crossed he is kicked out and the next government will deal with it.

As an amusing aside re Trudeau, do you remember all the scandals around his parents?
It always amazed me they voted him in because the Trudeau family scandals was Canadas claim to fame for many years. He was an anomly among leaders at the time seen as a superficial playboy and a security risk.
The DM mentions a few of them here.
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13623909/justin-trudeau-mick-jagger-mother-margaret-rolling-stones-canada.html

I remember his father, yes. I think Canada will be well shot of Justin.

If you are against abortion then dont have one, but do not try to control other womens bodies and lives.
If you are a man which I'm beginning to suspect, then exactly the same applies.
Get a vasectomy and myodb.

Yes many reasons.

But also, many women. Not everyone thinks like you.

Maybe if you stopped these witch hunts and listened to other points of view you'd all stop clutching your handbags and screaming at women who have different opinions to you.

Don't be ridiculous
You can't wang on about how great a feminist you are for not "dissing other women" and simultaneously think that "other women" are going to go round aborting healthy foetuses at eight and a half months. Not to mention the medical professionals who would need to carry out the procedure.

Typical pro life talking point, you are also giving me "no sex before marriage"/ extreme chastity vibes. Are you very religious?

Tbc I know a person cant change sex, nor have I ever called a man she or visa versa.
I think this movement is the most misogynist movement in my lifetime,so does that make me 'Ultra'?

Because simultaneously I think that supporting the loss of abortion rights on the theory it will end trans ideology is barking mad.

And why on earth is MM saying it should be an either or for women who are half the population?
Frying pan into burning furnace.

And you can bet your bottom dollar that if in fact Trump cracks down on LGBTQ++
that wiil elicit SO much more support for them.

Fight it in the courts and let the wind fizzle out of the balloon.

keep your opinions out of others uteruses.

abortion is healthcare and isn’t as easy as ‘just asking men to stop getting us pregnant’ as we all know, it’s not simple is it. many who terminate may have been trying to conceive. or find themselves in an abusive relationship. or be very young. and many other reasons.

There is no way on god's earth that I will ever accept that not allowing it a woman to have an abortion is okay.

Alwaystired94 · 22/07/2024 21:31

I'd suggest that men need to stop making women pregnant if they are not in long term relationships where both people have planned to bring up a child together.

At some point you guys are going to have to accept that other women are allowed other opinions and have different viewpoints and that doesn't make you right and them wrong.

Would you consider for a moment that women are free-er in the bodies in which they were born, that develop naturally, and freely operate within female reproductive cycles than they are in dependency on medication/manufactured hormones or reliance on the provision of surgery. This might seem far fetched, but to women of my generation there was no automatic provision of abortion or contraception. It is my sense that women were far free-er for say no to unwanted sex and to have a feeling of ownership of one's own biology/sense of self. It is really worth thinking hard about this. I'm not anti-abortion, but the idea that this is a right does a lot of heavy lifting, and to my mind it doesn't serve us in the way many young women seem programmed to believe.

Wow.

Yes. I think most women are, which is why I was surprised by MMs rant. Maybe she doesn't know that many women who need hormonal contraception?

There is another conversation about why the implicit way of treating so many womens problems is to give us hormones, but I think that's more to do with the patriarchy in medicine than politicians/big pharma.
