BMA to vote to 'disavow' the Cass review

The governing body of the BMA is to hold a vote tomorrow (Wednesday July 17) to 'disavow' the Cass Review. Words fail me to be honest. Any doctors, particularly members of the BMA, able to explain or comment?

Article by Hannah Barnes in the Spectator www.newstatesman.com/politics/health/2024/07/why-are-british-doctors-voting-to-reject-the-cass-report and thread on X/Twitter x.com/hannahsbee/status/1813252387504857241

Have they edited the report?

The link used by @LookingForwardToSunshine has the first sentence including 'top doctor' but that phrase is nowhere in the article now.

Dr Runswick may be a senior council member but she is a very junior doctor.

borntobequiet · 18/07/2024 07:52

Isn’t the problem that they haven’t covered this story in any other way? Just that the BMA might have qualms?
I might have missed something though.

The BBC is now reporting on this story

A real flat report there. Few omissions but no real one sidedness

It's a lovely quote but doctors don't study Foucault.

I think I first heard about him in an article in the Guardian about him abusing boys in Tunisia. Had previously been blissfully unaware of his existence.

MarieDeGournay · 17/07/2024 12:07

It's almost as if they've read Foucault not as a social critique but as if it were an owners' manual
Love it, AlexaAdventuress!Smile

MN quote of the year 😂

Winterborne74 · 17/07/2024 22:52

It is concerning that the BMA is not being open about this. Suspect very robust discussions are happening behind the scenes though. It would be a disaster for the credibility of the organisation if the motion were to get anywhere.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/07/2024 22:47

I'd like to have been a fly on the wall at the BMA today!

BMA say the outcomes of the discussions won’t be made public and are insisting Hannah Barnes report is wrong. She’s having none of it!

Hey guys, your internal policies potentially affect citizens of the UK. You are only in the jobs you are in because every person in the UK pays for the NHS. Your duty isn't to pacify your LGBTQIA++ clubs. Get with the fucking programme.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 17/07/2024 21:26

I expect it was all the ‘abuse’ pointing out that they had completely lost the run of themselves

borntobequiet · 17/07/2024 21:24

Abuse directed towards BMA members or staff is totally unacceptable and has no place in serious consideration of these complex issues.

What was this abuse? And from whom?

Well spotted @GargoylesofBeelzebub - thanks.

Looks like they're backpedalling. "No that's not what we really meant!"

Or as I should probably say in Mumsnet idiom, 'reverse ferret'.

Or, as is now my favourite version of this from a MN on this board this week whose name I'm afraid I've forgotten:"beep beep, reverse ferret".

We are aware of press speculation about our internal policy making process and the Cass review - please see our response below🧵1/4

The BMA continues to give extensive consideration to the methodology, findings and recommendations of the Cass review in line with the Association’s articles requiring us to ‘promote the achievement of high quality health care’. 2/4

This is a substantial process, making use of expertise within the Association, in line with the BMA’s internal policy making processes. It would be inappropriate to pre-empt our position, or to provide further public comment on those processes. 3/4

INSANE!
What the hell they are giving the go ahead to harm children even more!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 17/07/2024 20:07

It's shocking that the BMA are doing all this behind closed doors without consulting the members. Hopefully a whistleblower will come forward and we'll find out what actually went on.

The patient is described as suffering from cirrhosis associated with Hepatitis C, but if alcohol were involved, it’s known to increase oestrogen levels in the body in men.

Ah thanks - I see now I was reading a different paper, here: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5833878/

I think endometriosis is now being described as cell tissue similar to that found in the womb that has developed elsewhere, rather than it being womb tissue per se. My (rather ancient but degree level) biologically educated mind can kind of accept this can happen in males in rare instances where there are abnormal levels of oestrogen - such as during some cancer treatments (and cross-sex hormone treatment?!) or thought obesity related in this case.

I guess you do hear of strange cell growth on occasions (such as tumours containing teeth and hair etc). I am no expert or dr though!

WorriedMutha · 17/07/2024 18:38

Does the BMA statement mean that the vote is called off. I can't believe they would do that if they thought it would pass. Is this a climb down.

Byjimminy · 17/07/2024 18:28

Slothtoes · 17/07/2024 17:56

Thanks Signalbox that is interesting.
IANADoctor. Feel like medically it’s very confusing to describe something in a male body, in terms of a condition of the lining of the uterus.

"Instead, the BMA press office say:
“The BMA will continue with further work in this area to contribute positively to the provision of care and services to this often neglected population and will be setting out the BMA’s stance in due course.”
More to come …"

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 17/07/2024 18:11

BMA saying the article is misleading.
