FFS disability is now on the pride flag

I'm livid. I'm disabled and I do not want to be represented on the LGBTQ+ flag.

Also this quote: Dayna Halliwell (she/her), Content and Engagement Manager at Evenbreak, led the collaboration and organised the Pride visit. She said: “It was very moving and amazing to see the reaction of disabled people in the audience. You could see the joy on their faces of being represented in the parade.”

Presumably this new addition refers to straight disabled people.

Justeanbiscuits says not:
"It's just including the disabled people who already fall under the banner, as it were. The inclusion has been led by LGBTQ disabled people."

Why are disabled people being represented twice on the same flag - a flag that was originally about same sex attraction?

If a group of people have something in common (same sex attraction) then why dilute that by breaking the group down to smaller sub groups?

MattSmithsBowTie · 16/07/2024 10:07

I would’ve assumed the pride flag already represented people who are both disabled and same sex attracted, but if it’s just there for all disabled people that’s a bit weird, what next?

Surely vegans and vegetarians must be represented on the pride flag. Maybe by adding a carrot or a chickpea?

The Chickpea didn't mash itself.

I am a straight, able-bodied woman and my knowledge of the Pride movement is what I hear on the news and see on SM.

Until today I thought Pride was about gender. Now I see the modern flag represents diversity and hope.

I think that each representation will become so diluted so it will become meaningless. A Pride march could include everyone.

WhatsUpNowThen · 16/07/2024 10:05

Then get off your arse and campaign and do the work to get it included. Don't get all upset when other people do that and get what they want included

Whoosh!!!

Quote if the day. Eventually we will all be ' othered' there will be no others.

We'll all be part of their grift.

People who are paedophiles and fetishists identify themselves as queer. There’s a difference.

One of the tenets of Queer Theory is removal of boundaries of relationships, including age.

They do not! Seriously. Paedophiles do not (outside of one or two freaks) identify as queer due to their paedophilia.

Yes, I know some people who their fetishism is part of their queer identity. I know people who identify as queer because they don't fit the gay or bi box, so consider themselves queer. I don't know ANYONE who considers queer a gender identitity.

I'm a disabled vegetarian... just putting that out there.

Would you prefer brocolli or red peppers on your flag? On a background of mixed lentils - were not lentilphobic here sniffs in disapproval at those who are

NotBadConsidering · 16/07/2024 10:03

JusteanBiscuits · 16/07/2024 09:56

What is your criteria for someone being disabled?

If the criteria of the other categories set by the flag’s proponents is anything to go by, then it’s anyone who identifies as disabled. You can self identify into all the other categories on the flag, so no reason why that should be any different by their logic.

Devonbabs · 16/07/2024 10:02

WaitingForMojo · 16/07/2024 09:05

It’s a celebration of diversity, is it not?

Unless you’re incredibly homophobic and don’t want to be associated, I don’t see why you’d have a problem with it.

Ah, straight out the Dentons playbook.

Can you really not see? In what way are the difficulties faced by disabled people in any way the same as those faced by gay people? Are you saying disabled people should become professional victims?

Has anyone ever faced difficulty getting up a flight of stairs because they’re in a same sex relationship?

Often there can be a conflict. Trans using disabled toilets is often in direct contravention of Disabled rights.

You can see why they want to do it, to bolster numbers. Just as you have done, it will soon be “well if you don’t support Transpeople it means you hate disabled people because they are on our flag too.”

We are not stupid we 100% see the motives and tactics being used here.

I feel sorry for the gay community - especially women having pride hijacked.

She didn't say that. You're clearly looking for a soundbite you can screenshot for Twitter/x.

I was asking for clarification.

Despite the fact that Queer is not a "gender identity".

K0OLA1D · 16/07/2024 10:00

elliejjtiny · 16/07/2024 09:18

Because disability and LGBTQ are completely different things. It would be like having a flag for disabled people and vegetarians.

Also I don't feel like celebrating my disability most of the time.

I'm a disabled vegetarian... just putting that out there.

It's like the men moaning that other people don't do enough to celebrate international mens day while they do nothing about it themselves, just wait for others to do it for them.

Queer Theory destroys everything. Including understanding sarcasm.

You'd have to be pretty homophobic to keep adding to that flag to the point that LGB people now seem to be represented on about 8% of their own flag.

Omg prepare for the OUTRAGE of daring to say that anyone and everyone can just self identify as ND now and how disgusting and offensive it is to those with an actual diagnosis.
Every man and his dog is either identifying themselves or self identifying kids as ND even when it's clear the professional are pushing back on these self assertions.

Speaking of identifying into things, a couple of times over the past few months I've read items on the BBC website where they've referred to people who 'identity as muslims' which I thought was a bit odd. Surely you are either a Muslim or you aren't?
I don't understand the idea of replacing fact with personal opinion because it is clearly nonsense.

NotBadConsidering · 16/07/2024 09:58

JusteanBiscuits · 16/07/2024 09:49

I am very well educated on it, thank you.

I'm asking them to clarify what they are saying. Are they calling anyone who identifies as queer and paedophile and fetishist?

People who are paedophiles and fetishists identify themselves as queer. There’s a difference.

One of the tenets of Queer Theory is removal of boundaries of relationships, including age.

Blackcats7 · 16/07/2024 09:58

What the hell has disability to do with being gay?
Which bit of this ridiculous flag supposedly represents disability?
I hate fucking flags in general. Fucking tribalism. But this one is beyond a joke.
I am disabled and take it from me there is no “joy on my face”.
Patronising arsewipes.

Surely to God there are more important things to worry about

Not for LGBQT community it seems.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 16/07/2024 09:54

That's what thought too. Presumably this new addition refers to straight disabled people.
I wonder who they'll add on next? Deaf people maybe. So 'they are heard' 😂
IMO they are following the funding money as per usual.

Suzieandthemonkeyfeet · 16/07/2024 09:58

Disability is not a sexuality.

Pride was started to raise awareness and fight for the legal rights of Gay and lesbians.

When you add everything in to the mix it dilutes what the original purpose was for. It’s a fucking joke now and actually really offensive.

oOiluvfriendsOo · 16/07/2024 09:57

Pride and everything about it is a joke, including that monstrosity of a flag.
Neither myself or my friends have attended a Pride event in about 5 years now.
The LGB has been totally lost, it's all about the 'others'.

Cattenberg · 16/07/2024 09:57

JusteanBiscuits · 16/07/2024 09:55

You already have a flipping flag. A logo. A ribbon.

I’ve never seen it/them. Shows how relevant they are then!

Oh, OK, then it is fine for LGBTQ people to be attacked and abused then. :face palm:

What? No it's not. Why would you say that, and how does this ridiculous flag do anything to address that?
