FFS disability is now on the pride flag

I'm livid. I'm disabled and I do not want to be represented on the LGBTQ+ flag.

Also this quote: Dayna Halliwell (she/her), Content and Engagement Manager at Evenbreak, led the collaboration and organised the Pride visit. She said: “It was very moving and amazing to see the reaction of disabled people in the audience. You could see the joy on their faces of being represented in the parade.”

I am standing by my comment that Queer is not a gender identity which is what was claimed

I know people who identify as queer because they don't fit the gay or bi box, so consider themselves queer. I don't know ANYONE who considers queer a gender identitity.

This claim is genuinely puzzling. Queer has most definitely included, indeed centred, those with a gender identity! How can you claim it’s not?

Surely vegans and vegetarians must be represented on the pride flag. Maybe by adding a carrot or a chickpea?

A sprig of broccoli 🥦

I’m vegan, I do not want to be connected in any way shape or form to the misogynistic shit show that is now Pride!! - sorry I know you’re joking, but it won’t be long before someone puts this forward lol

SerendipityJane · 16/07/2024 10:23

Who the fuck would want to "celebrate" being housebound, unable to live without a carer, at risk of lifelong unhealing pressure sores and bladder and bowel incontinence whilst being visually impaired and unable to get from one room to the next without a 10 page risk assessment ?

Oh, not that kind of disabled.

I am a straight, able-bodied woman and my knowledge of the Pride movement is what I hear on the news and see on SM.

Until today I thought Pride was about gender. Now I see the modern flag represents diversity and hope.

I think that each representation will become so diluted so it will become meaningless. A Pride march could include everyone.

Where did you get the idea that Pride was about gender? It's not even close! 🤦‍♀️

This is why straight people have no business sticking their nose in. Probably exactly why we've ended up in this mess in the first place.

Time for a reminder...

Sounds like a step towards disabilities being minimised even further and treated the same as identifying a certain way.

It'll be to aid anyone to more easily self identify as having a disability. This whole self ID trumping facts is just way out of hand!

Pride is a celebration of sexuality- not diversity!!!!!

Diversity in sexuality- yes. Not diversity of people.

Should we start putting races on there too? This is coming from someone from the global south who constantly has their race chucked into conversations that try to reason arguments about sexuality with comparisons to racism.

Should we start putting races on there too?

Races are already on the Progress flag - the black and brown chevrons in the left.

You will be well aware then that some of the groups pushing for inclusion under the pride umbrella are minor attracted persons (aka paedophiles) and pro bestiality.

Noting this does not equal 'anyone who identifies as queer is a paedophile and fetishist' .

You will also be aware that 'queer' is offensive to some LGB people, as is the appropriation of homosexuality by 'spicy straights'.

This forced teaming does no one to the left of the T any favours.

I am standing by my comment that Queer is not a gender identity which is what was claimed

labamba007 · 16/07/2024 10:21

Disabled people are highly underrepresented, face huge adversity, and gain the least awareness.

They deserve their own awareness campaign separate from pride not just tagged on at the end. I'd like to see organisations give as much investment and celebration to people with disabilities as they do LGBT+ people.

Pride used to be about sexuality…LGB it only recently that the T was added and focus shifted around 2017 to trans

There was a suggestion that this was because the introduction of various policy including same sex marriage that gave legal equality to the LGB community. They needed a new campaign to keep them in jobs.

Why choose to be offended by this? I am gay and don’t really see myself as part of the LGBTQ+ community. However, I respect people’s right to want to form this kind of community as a safe place and celebration of diversity. If your personal belief or identity doesn’t align with it then no one is forcing you to be part of it.

Actually, disabled people are being coerced to “be part of it”. Look at the replies to those who have said that the flag doesn’t represent them.

Disable people (and indeed lesbians and others) are allowed to challenge the condescension of It was very moving and amazing to see the reaction of disabled people in the audience. You could see the joy on their faces of being represented in the parade. That speaker does not see disabled people as actual humans she sees them as “Validation Sources”. It’s actually quite sinister.

Startingagainandagain · 16/07/2024 10:19

Why does it bother you?

The flag seems to me to be a representation of diversity.

I have a long term health condition that is classified as a disability and I am a bi woman.

I have no problem with this whatsoever.

If that flag does not represent you then simply don't use it/display it.

I am always amazed at how so many people these days choose to be offended by everything.

If you want to be offended by something I would focus on campaigning for the rights of disabled people not to be treated like dirt by so many employers, the DWP and the right wing media..This is what affects my life negatively, not a bloody flag....

Quietnights · 16/07/2024 10:19

It’s a celebration of diversity, is it not? Unless you’re incredibly homophobic and don’t want to be associated, I don’t see why you’d have a problem with it

You try openly marching nowadays at a Pride event under a banner that proudly announces you are a same sex attracted lesbian and you'll quickly discover how diverse and homofriendly Pride now is.

(Clue: its not).

The Progress Pride flag is.

The Pride flag now is the Progress Pride flag.

No no, you don't get to do that. You don't get to insert the words to make people shut up. Hmm it doesn't work anymore.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 16/07/2024 10:09

😂😂😂😂
It's only a matter of time before the grift turns to supermarket sponsorship and that carrot appears.

If I have to denounce veganism because it's appears I'll not only have to change my business name I'll have to turn down any food deemed vegan. I'm going to be Marjorie Doors aren't I 😑

I'm disabled, working in the disability sector, and I can tell you now that Evenbreak does not have as good a reputation amongst the disability community as they portray, or the level of success they would have you believe.
This doesn't surprise me.

It is't about being offended.

It is about money going to flags instead of actual ways of making lives easier for actual disabled people.

In fact when they spend loads of cash on rainbow crossings, that guide dogs cannot recognise and are not safe because drivers don't have to stop at them - it puts actual people with disabilites at risk.

Grammarnut · 16/07/2024 10:17

JohnnyAndTheDead · 16/07/2024 09:03

Why not?

Because disability is not about sexual orientation. It is frequently not something people want to celebrate, either. Also, by the time Pride flags are done they will be meaningless. The rainbow was about being able to be truthful about sexuality. Now it's a carry-all for a lot of cultists.

Sloejelly · 16/07/2024 10:17

Queer theory definitely includes paedophilia. All the big queer theory academics are quite clear on that and see no problem with it.

Katiesaidthat · 16/07/2024 10:08

Isn´t this a bit odd? It´s like letting slip that being gay is a disability, which is what the most ardent homophobes have always said. Down this road lies madness.

I don’t think the aim is that per se.

I do think it’s about money and eligibility for go for disability funds which would have been ear marked for other disability charities - and it would be hard to track what money was actually spent on disabled people.

Once being gay and lesbian became normal and marriage rights were won - donations started drying up - hence the terrific push for trans identity.

Also it opens the door for people to ‘identify’ as disabled. We could see non disabled people receiving money that should have gone to actual disabled people.

It’s a fucking mess what this group of people are allowed to do.
