Im not a mum. I just went into the public toilet (to put up some single sex signs lol) and as I approached a man was just about to enter with a baby, I said excuse me I dont think you are allowed to use the ladies, he replied, pointing at the baby change sign, you can go in first if you like, I repeated, I dont think you can use the ladies, when I came out he had gone. Spouse said Im wrong, he’s allowed. googled and cannot see an answer?

Whether a man is a risk or not - he is entering a women only space where a pre-teen may be feeling vulnerable due to:

  • Having their first or a heavy period and having clothes and hands being covered in blood - needing to remove bottoms to wash in sink and dry under dryer (been there myself)
  • Being an existing victim of sexual abuse and feeling threatened/scared/triggered by having an adult male between her and the exit (baby or no baby)

Why does this man's need to not have to walk to his car to change a nappy/find somewhere with appropriate facilities trump her feelings and human right for privacy, dignity and respect?

@junochorus do you genuinely believe this is inevitable for any man in this situation.

As i said, that is your right to have that opinion, i don't share it.

Well of course NAMALT 🙄
Good men don't try and access women's spaces and perverts don't go around wearing a badge that announces themselves as such.

DBS checks are for men and women.

They don't just target men

My personal risk assessment would consider a man who has offered to wait to let a woman use the facilities first, and has asked if it was ok to change his baby, to not be a danger to me,

I respect other women don't feel like that, and that takes priority over me not minding.

But nobody should be telling me that I should see every man accessing a female space as a risk, because I don't.

Well that's great for you, but once he's in there alone he would likely be setting up discreet video cameras to film women or going through the sanitary bin looking for used sanpro.

Why is not living my life in fear of all men make me 'hand Maiden'
I would rather that than be scared of every possible risk.
I hate the trite 'be kind' label, but if I'm going to be kind I'm not going to discriminate against half the population just because they happen to be male. What an awful way to live .

Why don't you go the whole hog and ban dbs checks while you're at it? Not all teachers/police/nursery workers etc are rapists!

Dumbo12 · 15/07/2024 15:46

Once more for the hard of thinking, any man entering a female only space, turns that space into a mixed sex space. That excludes some women from that space, some posters feel that some men should be welcomed into those spaces and sod those women who are then excluded.

Or maybe just a different opinion and approach to risk. I wouldn't mind a man changing a baby or supervising a toddler in the ladies.
I respect that you do mind.

I respect that you, as an adult, don't mind.

But my first priority is my preteen and teenage daughters, who are still vulnerable and need to know that a female space is just that.

And possibly a suspect agenda?

TRA'S maybe........

Given your "supposedly" large family, you should know better.

Ah so you admit that you can't find any news reports? Better stay in your house and not venture out then. There might be a man with a doll standing outside your front door. According to a few strange posters on this thread, these type of men are abundant. Maybe see your doctor because your anxiety and paranoia is not healthy.

Why would I not leave my house?

We're discussing men going INTO women and girls spaces.

Morwenscapacioussleeves · 15/07/2024 14:19

No he shouldn't use the baby changing if it's located inside the women's toilets (unless single occupancy unit like the disabled/baby change ones).

I hate that baby changes are often located in disabled toilets because the baby change facility means someone who might find it very hard to wait is more likely to have to - as a result I changed many many nappies on my knee in the women's toilets. No reason the father couldn't have changed baby on his knee & he should complain to the management about the sexist baby change provision !

Doesn't answer the question though, does it?

And no, I disagree. Many "normal people" don't want to see or hear men in ladies toilets. Disabled or otherwise.

You seem to have an agenda for wanting men in womens spaces.
Why is that?

Therefore if women or girls had been attacked, you were responsible?

Tell me, how did you know if a man is genuinely disabled before letting him into a womens space?

I'm female and I say as long as he had a baby with him and if there was no baby changer in the gents then let him in the women's loos.

At least he was trying to be a good dad by attempting to change the baby stuff instead of expecting his partner to do it!

I used to be a cleaner and always allowed men with babies in the women's unit or men with disabilities if there was no suitable changer/men's facilities.

You're extremely hard of understanding, aren't you?

I feel sorry for you and your immediate family.

Don't worry we're cracking on with four families, five grandchildren and all use female, disabled facilities depending on where the owner of the premises has sited the changing station 🙂

So they remove these babies from nurseries so that they can get access to women's toilets?

They don't need to if new GF has a newborn, just offer to take stepkid out for the afternoon.

They must be busy procreating every couple of years to have a baby on tap.

Tell you what share some media articles where it says.

Man takes baby into ladies loo for nappy change and rapes woman

I repeat: Realistically, the question shouldn't be "is there a publicised instance of men using X to facilitate rape?", given how few rapes are ever reported. The question should be "what stops a man from using X to facilitate rape?".

TeabySea · 15/07/2024 14:03

Topofthemountain · 14/07/2024 10:58

Where was he supposed to change the baby?

There either needs to be a separate facility or a set up in the men's. I don't think there is an allowed / not allowed thing but it is the one time when it is shit to be a Dad out with a baby / toddler.

Absolutely.
Mem and women have children, both are able to do childcare. There should be facilities for both parents. Nappy changing isn't a solely female responsibility and shops, cafes etc need to make adequate provision.

If there isn't a changing table in the men's, I don't see what other reasonable option this father had, at that time.
It isn't ideal that he has to use the women's toilets, but in the circumstances I see why he did, and wouldn't have a problem.
