This happened near me - I'm really shocked that he only received a suspended sentence 😞

Sir Starmer's prisons won't empty themselves.

I’m never certain that these crimes should be somewhat hidden away in ‘feminism’ rather than being highlighted in mainstream ‘aibu’

You are right.

That advice about refusing to get out of the car, but instead say you’ll drive to the police station, is invaluable.

And the number, on just this short thread, speaking of something similar happening to them is a warning that it really is not that rare.

MugPlate · 10/07/2024 23:44

That’s £154 surcharge will definitely convince him not to try again.

Saschka · 10/07/2024 23:41

YouJustDoYou · 10/07/2024 16:43

Yeah, I mean, it takes a woman to be murdered for the police to care...

They didn’t care about that. Look at the vigil. They cared about the backlash.

We just don't matter, do we?

LastMinuteSubstitution · 10/07/2024 23:27

This makes my blood run cold. This sentence has to be reviewed surely.

Is this a trans reference?

Can't have a single topic on mumsnet anymore that isn't about or becomes about trans people can we.

Perhaps the poster is referring to the fact that numerous politicians have declared that men would not pretend to be something they are not to gain access to women, girls and children.

Peskysquirrel · 10/07/2024 15:24

No, no, no. Men never pretend to be something they're not. It never happens.

It seems that Jess Phillips has a very full in-basket. And then there is the other 99% of VAWG.

TheaBrandt · 10/07/2024 20:05

Started listening to the podcast on the holly willoughby case. There are numerous sub groups online discussing abducting women / best way to do it / sharing abduction related porn. Aren’t men delightful 🙄🙄🙄

Honestly I veer towards being quite relaxed but shaken by that as have teen girls.

The pervert who has just been found guilty of attempting to kidnap Holly Willoughby got a suspended sentence for his first offences too- which were both attempts to kidnap women off a train by threatening them with a weapon.

these men will always escalate, he clearly had it in mind to do this lady great harm, and Wayne Couzens did exactly the same thing.

The man who killed my friend aged 17 had a history of violence against women, he had even set fire to a previous girlfriend, but he wasn't jailed till he stabbed my friend to death after lying in wait for her on her way to work.

This was in the early 90s, nothing has changed.

PasteldeNata78 · 10/07/2024 19:55

The lack of concern about how bad this is - unbelievable!
Personally I'm never going to stop for police of anybody else for that matter in a quiet place with no witnesses. They can fine me if they like.
It's not up to the general public to stop these potential murderes masquerading as policemen ffs

pudseypie · 10/07/2024 19:54

The police simply don't care. A 12 yo girl was upskirted on a train this week in our town. Man confronted by other passengers, police called and arrived at next train station, found many different upskirting photos on his phone from multiple women / girls and was simply let go, no charges as this poor girl was too scared to press charges.
Really, what hope do women and girls have?

gardenmusic · 10/07/2024 19:50

Could this sentence be appealed? Would that have to be the victim?

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 10/07/2024 19:40

Nothingeverything · 10/07/2024 15:30

"Officers found an LED lightbar, handcuffs and a baseball bat in his car."

😮 and only a suspended sentence???

Christ. Is there anything men can do to women that’s totally unacceptable? I know rape is usually ok because who cares. And killing women during sex is ok, because rough sex. But …. No. There isn’t a but. We just really don’t matter.

WomenMatterToo · 10/07/2024 16:43

Yes I remember this too. Gave both my DDs a lecture about not stopping for the police at night in this type of situation, but drive to a police station.

This is what I was taught in the 80s. In my culture we would never trust the police to just pull over, either at night or in a deserted area. I've passed the same info down to my step and own children.

My advice will remain because violence against women is just not a problem for men...so it is a systemic issue I don't see any resolution to.

Imnobody4 · 10/07/2024 19:27

Who made the decision to try at the Magistrstes court. Is this about prison overcrowding?
Impersonating a police officer:
In the magistrates' court the maximum penalty is six months' imprisonment and/or a fine to the statutory maximum. In the Crown Court the maximum penalty is five years' imprisonment and/or a fine.

gardenmusic · 10/07/2024 18:55

I can't even find the words. Is it OK until they actually use the weapons, then?

MexicanChiWowWow · 10/07/2024 18:54

Peskysquirrel · 10/07/2024 15:24

Yep.

According to the BBC report, he said that he was working for an undercover unit called "The Brotherhood".

I would love to know if the new prison minster agrees with the sentence handed down.

Words fail me
This is so appalling and it will carry on unless something is done to address it

Imnobody4 · 10/07/2024 18:25

This is ridiculous. There needs to be another charge available after all there is for theft. Presumably if he had a knife, machete he'd have been charged.
Impersonating a police officer here is a means to committing a serious offence

Going equipped is an offence defined by section 25 of the Theft Act 1968. If you accused of going equipped, the Prosecution must show that you: Had a tool or other article in your possession, That tool was intended for use in the course of a burglary or theft, and.

gardenmusic · 10/07/2024 17:09

...and this did happen, because it happened to me, back in the 90's:

I was contracted to window dress a duty free outlet.
A few people interupted me ' can you tell me where etc.. ' Fine, it goes with the job, people think I am staff, I help if I can. A couple of men my age were very chatty, thought nothing of it. I was in again two days later.
The manager told me that the police had been in asking for me, and had requested my name and address. He was only able to give them my phone number and name.
The manager was very cagey about arranging the next contract with me, and in fact never did. I kept getting the side eye from the staff.

I was totally bemused, and a little worried, then that weekend I had a phone call - the guy explained who he was - one of the chatty men, and asked me out.

He had left the area he was suposed to be working, driven down to the outlet, used his ID to get through customs etc and to gain information about me, which he then used to ask me out.
Aren't our police wonderful. So resourceful.
