Jess Phillips has been appointed to the Labour government as a minister, focusing on tackling violence against women and girls and domestic violence.

The Labour MP has been a vocal campaigner on the subject, and has become known for reading out a list of all the women killed by men in the UK every year on International Women's Day in parliament.

Ms Phillips had the role of shadow domestic violence and safeguarding minister from 2020 to 2023 under Sir Keir Starmer but resigned over the party's stance on the Middle East conflict in November.

She was one of 56 Labour MPs - including eight frontbenchers - to vote in favour of an SNP motion calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East.

This defied the Labour whip, and so Ms Phillips had to step aside.

Jess Phillips made minister following frontbench resignation over Middle East

The Birmingham Yardley MP has been appointed to the Home Office team, working under Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. She previously held a shadow role for domestic violence and safeguarding but stood down last year.

The concession to women is single sex refuges.

All the other concessions go to the Rainbow crew.

We get crumbs again, and those grudgingly.

Trans widows get shrugs.

Plus, as a poster said upthread, she either has no idea of what the Spousal Veto means, or she's pretty callous.

She knows exactly what the spousal veto is.

Jess Phillips appointed a minister to focus on tackling violence against women and girls and domestic violence.
HermioneWeasley · 10/07/2024 09:10

I hope she achieves something, but I have my doubts.

she stood by and watched Rosie Duffield receive appalling abuse.
she supports removing the misnamed “spousal veto”
she tried to appease aggressive men from wildly misogynistic (and anti semitic) cultures and nearly lost her seat anyway.
she added Brianna Ghey’s name to the “counting dead women” list

has she ever spoken out about grooming gangs?

I believe she has done some good work with refuges in her area, but seems to only get involved when there is zero political risk in doing so.

So, now we have Annaliese Dodds as women and Equalities and Development . Bridget Phillipson as Women and Equalities and Education. And Jess Phillips as VAWG.
Why doesn't VAWG come within the remit of W&e?
Why is W&E spread between to ministers, who already have posts?
Sounds like a job creation scheme for Civil Servants.

Splitting the role up might be a way to neutralise any dissent. Jess ensures women may 'get' single sex rape support and refuges. (Good, but it's not enough).

Every other consideration will be thrown to the other group - Dodds and Philipson get to do the Rainbow brief, conversion therapy, Equality Act non amendment, all the contextual women in their miasmic vagueness. Press on with 'breaking new ground' for Genderism.

*So tired of hearing X is a "strong woman". Especially when I also hear "so and so is quietly GC".

Fucking hell. Stand up for what you believe in. It's literally your job as an MP.*
Yes to this, it was the narrative for Thangham Debonnaire as well

Sadly, she won't be able to do the podcast any more. And I don't think Ayesha Hazarika will either.😢 Collateral damage.

That's a shame but would rather have JP as a minister with this portfolio so I can live with it!Smile

What's the deal with Ayesha Hazarika? Has she also been given a job?

Maddy70 · 10/07/2024 09:01

Excellent appointment. I have to say he's really doing well with his appointments im very impressed so far

EvelynBeatrice · 10/07/2024 08:58

At last - the first suggestion I've seen from a TRA on here that nerves about including transwomen in the women category are due to 'hatred of all men' and therefore not of trans people generally and not transmen.

Yes that's absolutely the case - the only reason women are nervous about being alone with a strange man ( however he identifies) or uncomfortable changing clothes in mixed sex changing room or showering with one in prison etc is due to hatred of all men. Just like the safeguarding we have in place for checking adults working with children is due to hatred of all adults.

Guilty of taking the bait on this thread - Points in this post noted, you're completely right!

I'm based in Scotland and totally delighted by Labours win - the diversity of their cabinet, with MPs from representative backgrounds is a breath of fresh air. I don't know a lot about JP other than being really moved by her a couple of years ago in the House of Commons reading the names of all the women that were killed (femicide reading). It went into 7+ minutes (I think it's a yearly reading she provides). The speaker at the end reminded her that there is a time limit.

That list compiled by a gc woman expelled.from Labour.

Thanks for recommending that podcast - I hadn't heard of it before. I'm always looking for new politics podcasts.

She does it with Ruth Davidson (former leader of the Scottish Tories) and Beth Rigby from Sky News. I really enjoy it.

hopscotcher · 10/07/2024 08:46

Very good news about Jess' appointment - a strong woman and voice.

Chariothorses · 10/07/2024 08:46

Jess P's determination to force straight married women into state registered 'same sex' marriages without their consent (often after their husband has fathered their kids) is just wierd, a direct attack on women's human rights and freedom of belief/ marriage consent.

HootyMcBooby · 10/07/2024 08:44

There IS no "narrow" definition of a woman.
There is only ONE definition.

Clue - it doesn't include biological males.

And comparing trans women to women with infertility or those who have had hysterectomy surgery? Pathetic and a total predictable fall-back argument from people desperate to convince themselves that men can somehow be included in the category of women.

Women of ANY kind, whether they have intact reproductive capabilities or not, have been pregnant or not, women who "don't look like women" (your words), women who don't want to BE women........they are ALL STILL WOMEN.
Men, however they identify, remain MEN.
A feeling inside someone's head does not change biological reality.

And to label people as "utterly insane" is incredulous coming from the side that has no concept of safeguarding, is happy to sterilise underage CHILDREN in the furtherance of an insidious and damaging ideology, is happy to ride roughshod over women's hard won rights, is happy to take away their safe spaces and right to dignity, privacy and safety, is happy to house dangerous men with vulnerable women and girls, is happy to allow men to compete against women who have trained their whole lives in a sporting discipline and now see their opportunities, medal and sponsorship chances being given away to mediocre male athletes with "ladyfeelz", is happy to bestow positions and awards to males in job opportunities that are exclusively female (woman of the year etc), is happy to force survivors of rape and abuse to seek shelter in places that can no longer be guaranteed to be free from males, and in fact can be RUN by a male..........

Yes.
WE'RE the lunatics.

ItWasnaMeGuv · 10/07/2024 08:43

Hiphopopotamonster · 10/07/2024 00:55

Yep. You’re right. So what about infertile women. What about women who have had a hysterectomy. Are they still women? Do they still experience discrimination based on still looking like they could get pregnant. What about trans women who look like they could also get pregnant? Trans women who can be raped. What about very masculine presenting women? Are they still women? Even if they don’t look like women?

Its nuanced. The whole thing. But you all reduce it down to how female presenting you are.

"So what about infertile women. What about women who have had a hysterectomy. Are they still women?"
Yes.

"What about trans women who look like they could also get pregnant?"
Men cannot get pregnant.

"Trans women who can be raped."
Men do indeed rape other men as well as raping women.

"What about very masculine presenting women?"
Masculine women are women.

"Its nuanced."
No. There are two sexes;
male/man/boy/small gametes/can produce sperm/XY or a variation with a Y

and female/woman/girl/large gametes/can produce eggs/XX (no Y). There is no third sex.

"Feminine" men are a type of man not a type of woman.
"Masculine" women are a type of woman not a type of man.

I’m chuffed to bits with Jess’s appointment. She’s driven, fearless and a strong advocate for women.

Is she? She talks a big game but has a tendency to fold.

Chariothorses · 10/07/2024 08:29

I am reserving judgement - actions speak louder than words. In Bristol, under the Labour council, all abuse support has been made mixed sex- domestic abuse, Freedom Programme, rape, sexual assault etc. Women who need female only abuse support are excluded, and are not being counted. It is cruel, and local well known Labour MPs who supposedly care for women, like Thangam Debonnaire (now out) said nothing.

childrenoftransitioners.org/2024/04/13/the-trans-lobby-has-destroyed-provision-for-female-abuse-victims-in-bristol-and-elsewhere-and-will-do-the-same-for-the-victims-bill/

In Brighton 'Sarah' is going to court for just a single female only rape support group.

Helleofabore · 10/07/2024 08:28

Hiphopopotamonster · 10/07/2024 00:29

The phrase is just so utterly cliche at this point. According to your description, Putin ‘knows what a woman is’. Hitler ‘knew what a woman was’. The fucking Taliban ‘know what a woman is’. Have you not noticed that those who subscribe to your narrow definition are also the ones most likely to rape and degrade women, keep them barefoot and pregnant and earning less? I’ll take feminism that recognises trans women and also looks closely at domestic violence, childcare prices and parental leave.

What is the relevance of your statement that these men who hate women on a collective level know what a woman is?

It is overly simplistic and extreme ‘guilt by association’ to use them as a reason to not fully support the prioritisation of sex over gender when sex matters.

If those people didn’t know who was a women, they wouldn’t be able to identify who to discriminate against or murder for non-compliance. So, of course they know.

Saying “I won’t support single sex spaces because some hateful men can accurately define which humans are female” isn’t clever. It is a sign that you as a person will only adopt points of view that a group of people you deem as acceptable hold. It doesn’t show you have shown independent thought at all.

Using that line of thinking, do you also reject vegetarianism because allegedly Hilter was one and you wouldn’t want to be associated with Hilter having the same beliefs?

Chartreux · 10/07/2024 08:25

IwantToRetire · 09/07/2024 23:51

Well irrespective of anything else, she has made it clear that women who are survivors of male violence need support services that are ONLY by and for biological women.

Though I believe she has said that there can be other types of women.

But hopefully this appointment shows that there will be a Minister who will stand up for the right of biological women to have service provision only from other biological women.

Edited

Why is that your first takeaway from this, rather than focussing on addressing male violence so that there is no need for support services anyway?

I'm not sure I'd have picked Phillips. Her main talent is self-promotion - she doesn't really have any concrete achievements but I can't deny she's brilliant at making everything about herself no matter how tenuous the connection. Hobbies: threatening to leave Labour and grabbing earning gigs.

Yes. Jess Phillips cares about Jess Phillips. Hence why she resigned the frontbench in opposition.
