yeah, employee boasts on social media about destroying company property and company sacks them. Its a real puzzler, for sure.

That's my point - it's not at all clear that she's boasting about destroying company property. To me, she seemed to be talking about her own possessions.

No need to be so mardy.

motheronthedancefloor · 08/07/2024 20:50

haven't seen the video, is she begging for a crowd fund legal help or something?

lonelywater · 08/07/2024 20:50

thestudio · 08/07/2024 20:35

Hmm. I think she was referring to her own copies of Christina's books, and I can't see where she's threatened to make sure no-one else reads them (either by hiding or not ordering or commissioning them?)

So while I'm pleased that a TRA has finally FAFO'd, and as enraging as her lack of self-awareness is, I'm a bit shocked that they've sacked her for that one tweet about tearing up the books if I'm honest.

Cognitive dissonance. I believe it really stings.

Why are TRAs so weepy? Confused

They are damaged.

Me too - it usually takes more than that to be sacked. However, that is between Tilly and her ex-employers.

Anyway, I am glad that Waterstones see their job as selling books, because I was beginning to wonder with all the book hiding that seemed to have been going on in the past 🥳

FrancescaContini · 08/07/2024 20:37

Oh Tilly, Tilly
You’re so silly

Well done, Waterstones!

MumblesParty · 08/07/2024 20:35

I can’t believe she thought it was OK to say what she said. It would be like someone working in a clothes shop saying they were going to destroy all the dresses on the racks by a designer they don’t like.

Her job was to sell books, not review them and decide whether they should be on the shelves or in the bin.

@RufustheFactualReindeer shes not said anything transphobic, she’s just publicly gender critical. Believing in biological sex is now classified as being transphobic in the eyes of the TRAs

I love (hate) how biology has to be branded as a 'belief' 🥲

BreadInCaptivity · 08/07/2024 20:33

Oh the irony.....

  • Loves books but only by authors she deems acceptable
  • Loves books but happy to bin them
  • Can't fathom the impact of expressing personal beliefs on SM
  • loves reading but presumably failed to read the corporate SM policy

Essentially she brought her employer into a discussion about her personal views.

She had no right to do that irrespective of the subject.

StellaGreen · 08/07/2024 20:30

Not heard of this author before.
I’ll be sure to swing by Waterstones tomorrow a grab a copy.

BezMills · 08/07/2024 20:30

Publishing a statement saying you are going to destroy company property is gross misconduct in any job ever. Boo fuckin hoo, don't be so fuckin stupid next time.

carofrancelynch · 08/07/2024 20:29

Good for Waterstones. Absolutely right that a member of staff should be sacked for saying she is going to destroy their property. Quite disturbing to watch that video though, she genuinely thinks she has done nothing wrong other than 'stand up for trans people' which as we know covers a multitude of sins including bullying and harassing women and being as nasty, spiteful and vindictive as you think you can get away with. She'd happily see GC women lose their jobs but can't hack it when she's held accountable for her own behaviour.

I see the TRAs out in force on Twitter saying that a 'TERF' got Tilly sacked. No, Tilly got Tilly sacked for writing something stupid and unprofessional.

DuesToTheDirt · 08/07/2024 20:26

Like several others, I don't think it's anything to do with Waterstones being GC. Having a staff member censoring books for disagreeing with the author is terrible publicity.

I couldn't work out what had happened from the OP, so I clicked through onto Tilly's post. My phone started (silently, thank goodness) playing her weepy poor-me video. I mean... Who does that? I feel like I don't need to know anything more about this woman. When did it become normal to film yourself making a weepy sad-face speech and broadcast it to the world? She looks to be a grown adult... How does she go about life, thinking that is a normal way to carry on?

Same!

But mine wasn't on silent! Lasted 3 seconds of her pathetic acting then had to close it down.

Like you said 3 seconds was enough to know everything about her!

I can't see Rina's original tweet, can anyone transcribe?

I wonder if they are basing that decision on WORIAD.

Here's the original tweet that Christina Dalcher complained about and got her fired for, she deserved everything she got.

Brilliant!! Well done Waterstones.
It's long past time that big companies started to kick back against these threats and start remembering who their core customers are 😄

AmandaHoldensLips · 08/07/2024 20:03

Snivelling into the camera while calling an author a hateful bigot?
Yep. That's going to work...

Luio · 08/07/2024 20:03

Watersones aren’t coming out as anything. They are just firing their employee who plans to destroy their merchandise. Considering how many political biographies they sell, I imagine they don’t really want their staff to go on an ideological book destroying rampage.

InvisibleBuffy · 08/07/2024 20:02

Yes, I wouldn't say Waterstones is GC. From what I can see, they fired an employee for making public statements that she intended to rip up books and otherwise make it difficult for readers to buy certain authors because she didn't like the authors' views.

As others have said, I'd expect Waterstones to sack her if it were the other way around too (e.g. if she were GC and claiming to rip up trans authors books).

It's only really remarkable because trans activists have been getting away with this kind of behaviour for so long that they don't even see what's wrong with it.

Rightsraptor · 08/07/2024 19:58

I once tried to read Shon Fae's book and within five minutes I felt like tearing it up.

But I didn't.

Citrusandginger · 08/07/2024 19:56

Oh golly. Have Waterstones discovered that some terfs quite like books?
