Do we know who the new Minister for Women will be, or if we will even have one? Maybe Minister for How I Identify.

There has been nothing official from Downing Street. Until Number 10 make an announcement anything else is speculation.

Not sure if this has been posted but apparently Anneliese is now Minister for Development.

In the past whoever has been Minister for Women and Equalities, this has been like their 2nd (tier) job.

Kemi Badenoch main post was Minister of Business and secondly Women and Equalities.

I wonder if Starmer was thinking of appointing Thangam Debbonaire. We'll never know.

Kemi Badenoch was Secretary of State for Business and Trade plus Minister for W&E.

How strange - the wikipedia page that I quoted saying Annaliese Dodds was Minister for Development now doesn't say that!

Aye

"Had my first of many calls with Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer this afternoon. We’re aligned on so much, from the need for more progressive politics to defending democracy at home and abroad.

We’re going to get a lot done together. 🇨🇦🇬🇧"

From what I hear from my Canadian contacts, Trudeau won’t be in charge much longer, such is his unpopularity. So good luck with that, Justin.

My proposal, which will be implemented no doubt as soon a pig flies over Downing Street, is for JKR to be put in the HoL and then given the Women & Equalities brief, just like they’ve done with Mr Timpson & the Prisons brief 😁

This was DH suggestion last night and I came over all unnecessary with excitement

Can't the poor woman get a day off?

From what I recall, the layers of government are, roughly:

Secretaries of State (attend Cabinet)
Ministers of State (may sometimes attend Cabinet as necessary)
Junior Ministers (do not attend Cabinet)

David Miliband was Schools' Minister when (I think) Charles Clarke was Sos for Education, for example. I went to an event where they were both present - very intelligent and personable, unlike Ruth Kelly who preceded Clarke as a (woeful and rude) SoS.

So is there no women and equalities minister?

That and a paedophile apologist leading the EHRC, I think we see the general direction here.

Not at the moment. They haven’t appointed any ministers yet, bar two. We don’t have a Minister for Social Care or Universities yet, either. They will make these appointments over the next few days. The Women and Equalities Minister will no doubt be among the announcements they will make.

dougalfromthemagicroundabout · 06/07/2024 16:38

Though I'd rather the job not exist at all than become the evil that is EDI. Which should stand for Exclusion, Discrimination and Injustice in my experience (and I'm not just talking about women's issues here - disabled people tend to get ignored in EDI too).

Annalise Dodd is in the Cabinet meeting. BBC she is sat 3 or 4 on Sir K's right.
There is a video, a wide angle at the end you can see her.

Anneliese Dodds is the Chair of the Labour Party and will have a seat at cabinet because of that. She doesn’t have a government department to run.

colouringindoors · 06/07/2024 16:04

Still nothing. Am refreshing Twitter regularly! I thought Vallance and Timpson were excellent appointments, praying for a good outcome. It'll never be Rosie sadly, but hopefully someone that's not completely captured...

Other possibility is that they restructure it into a Equality, Diversity & Inclusion type thing...

duc748 · 06/07/2024 16:04

I started to watch that Piers Morgan/Lisa Nandy clip, but I'm afraid my tolerance is low these days. I only lasted about two minutes in of LN refusing to answer Morgan's question, but instead deflecting with Caster Semenya and such. I assume there's another 7 minutes of that. It's just another example of the same old, same old. Starmer's been doing it for ages, they all have. Never a straight answer to a straight question.

Women and Equalities is a ministerial position, not a Secretary of State with a government department, and they haven’t announced any ministerial positions yet apart from Vallance and Timpson. Vallance and Timpson are not members of the cabinet.

Apparently the central four who will oversee the government are Starmer, Reeves, Rayner and Pat McFadden. Despite Rayner thinking that TWAW, Pat McFadden doesn’t strike me as the sort of bloke who thinks some women have a penis. But I realise that I may be being over-optimistic.

Carolyn Harris also might be a name they're considering? She's close to them and was at the No10 lineup.

Duw 'elp! (God help us!)

She's not even MP material if it wasn't for the fact she's had such a safe seat. She's still very focused on showing off her ally credentials after a very concerning employment tribunal that included allegations of homophobic attitudes towards a lesbian working in her constituency office.

EasternStandard · 06/07/2024 15:22

Is this an unknown

Would prefer Duffield over someone like Dawn Butler, obviously

How can anyone be that stupid? Imagine tweeting something that dense and still having the confidence to think you should be foreign secretary.

It’s hard to imagine how anyone could leap to such a conclusion isn’t it?

Maybe he’s convinced by Robin DiAngelo’s theory that “the question is not ‘did racism take place?’ It’s ‘how did racism manifest in that situation?’” In a scenario where you have black smoke, white smoke and a pope what other conclusion could you possibly come to?

RoyalCorgi · 06/07/2024 14:51

Signalbox · 06/07/2024 14:44

He also thought that the black / white smoke thing when they’re deciding on the next pope was an innuendo about the next pope’s race. He’s got form for spouting bollocks about things he doesn’t understand. It’s definitely a worry he’s Foreign Secretary.

BaconBrownSauce · 06/07/2024 14:46

So it’s taken less than 24 hours for women to be thrown under the bus by Labour!

Wish I could say I was surprised!
