New report says she was trustee at a church while gay conversion therapy was happening. The kind of conversion therapy that involves exorcism of demons.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4ngprp5xdvo

As a director and trustee at the charity behind the church, external from September 2016 to September 2018, Mrs Cates, had safeguarding responsibilities for those who attended

Thought this might interest some posters on here. Not sure I would trust her with safeguarding after this, if indeed she retains her seat.

A report finds St Thomas Philadelphia church in Sheffield had "supported" conversion therapy.

And then there is the Labour party’s complete failure to safeguard their own MP - Rosie Duffield.

The Liberal Democrat’s welcomed this individual AFTER they left the Greens following their father being their electoral agent whilst charged with the rape and torture of a girl in their house which eventually resulted in a 22 year sentence. We must hold both parties leaderships responsible for their safeguarding failures on this:

Is this a thread safeguarding and politicians or a hit thread on MC? You are making up spurious claims about her and refusing to hold other Parliamentary candidates to the same standard. You are very transparent.

It's a thread Miriam Cates in response to her being in the news. I'm saying nothing other than what's in the article and what she says herself. Other politicians are irrelevant whataboutery.

You really don't want to talk about this do you?

It's another attempt at a derail and totally irrelevant to Miriam Cates

It's not unusual but it's also quite a damaging belief. For example a belief in "demonic possession" was one of the reasons the safeguarding round Victoria Climbie failed. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/society/2001/oct/08/childprotection

I don't think damaging beliefs like that should be tolerated or encouraged.

Preacher believed Victoria was 'possessed'

A preacher who "exorcised" Victoria Climbié has admitted one of her murderers convinced him the eight-year-old's injuries were the result of demonic possession, the inquiry into the girl's death heard today.

So you have nothing to back this up? Just making random assertions?

But coming back safeguarding, what have you to say about Harriet Harmen’s previous association with PIE? Or the Greens and the Chanellors?

I'd be very interested in your answer too Cassie

Oh come off it

She is always going on about "producing babies" as if we are brood mares or something.

But that's kind if irrelevant to the point of this thread, which is her failure at a safeguarding responsibility. Either because she didn't want to or she wasn't competent to. Neither are good.

She wants to encourage women to stay at home and raise families

What is your basis for this statement?

Sorry not sorry for my many comments. For the sake of vulnerable children I’m glad that the GC movement has gained prominence. I’m still utterly disappointed to see it being increasingly affiliated with homophobic, misogynistic and regressive figures who stand against everything we hold dear. I am even more dissapointed to see so many doing all they can to silence concern and prevent accountability. I have too much self respect and love for women and LGB people to turn a blind eye.

Thank you for saying this

2022 article in Pink News - no mention of MC.Not linking 'cos Pink News.

GrammarTeacher · 03/07/2024 07:39

Will the buck does indeed stop with the safeguarding lead, anyone who has been involved with school governance will know that all trustees are held responsible for safeguarding and expected to know about it. There is a lot of extra training focused on it.
Personally, I find the support for MC on this board troubling. She is not a feminist. She is not a friend of women. She does not support bodily autonomy of women. She wants to encourage women to stay at home and raise families (as the preferred model not as their choice). Even if we were to put this incident to one side I would expect to see more criticism of her on here. But she's GC. There are GC MPs who are not anti-abortion and who don't think women belong in the home. It's ok to say you disagree with things people who agree with you on one with have done. So why aren't more people calling out her anti-women stances on other policies on here?

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 03/07/2024 07:19

There will be people in every organisation whose belief system leads them to be abusive. We have a lot in the NHS, schools, and yes of course churches as well.

In some cases those beliefs become part of the institution and are institutional abuse- like the institutional racism and misogyny at the Met, and
the hospital forcing women to change in front of a man.

There is a difference between being there when it has happened and being responsible for it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/07/2024 02:03

Colour me surprised.🙄

TicklishLemur · 02/07/2024 23:08

Don’t be ridiculous. Conversion ‘therapy’ is not therapy, it is abuse given a euphemistic name. Religious organisations are by and large the biggest perpetrators of it. You are the only one conflating issues, considering that this incident involved attempts to make a gay person straight! It has nothing to do with exploratory therapy for gender distressed children.

I know it’s not ‘therapy’ silly! That’s the point I’m making.
