Its only a short part at the start of this section - but as so many threads have now shown, Labour clearly doesn't not have an agreed position on supporting women's sex based rights.

Angela Rayner says she won’t be cowed by JK Rowling when it comes to her views on gender reforms

Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner has told this programme she won't be cowed by JK Rowling when it comes to her views on gender reforms. The Harry Potter author - who lives in Edinburgh - has accused Labour of abandoning women who want single-sex sp...

Ah I see - I can't open the video so didn't know she had been directly tackled so recently on the 2020 manifesto. Apols.

She was asked straight out by a C4 journalist in an interview during the election campaign and AR refused to give a straight answer, she kept dodging the question. It was infuriating to watch.

Exactly - it in the OP - that's why I posted it ....................

This may be a silly question ..but has anyone actually asked AR out straight if she stands by calling the WPUK and LGB alliance 'hate groups', yes or no, quoting the 2020 manifesto in a way that she had to give some sort of a direct answer?
By email? letter? question at a press conference? A question in Parliament probably wouldn't do the job as it's too easy to waffle unchallenged in reply.

Also the other signatories, but she is the highest-ranked.

Meanwhile, over on Reddit they're really really really mad at Rayner.

@MarieDeGournay is there a way of asking a politician a question that they have to give a direct answer to?

If they don't want to answer, they will ignore / deflect / waffle. They've even been known to walk out of interviews.

They will also ignore / deflect / waffle if asked in writing.

I know Angela Rayner makes much of her no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is persona, but if she really doesn't want to answer, she won't.

@Mumofoneandone I was going to say as someone who has an abhorrent fear of tax paperwork (even when I'm owed money) I'm not going to criticise her for that.
Having said that. She's going to be in charge of GB's finances. So errrr if she's anything like me then my God throw her out!

Mumofoneandone · 02/07/2024 10:11

Well AR is someone who can't get her tax affairs and home address properly sorted so no hope for her understanding and protecting woman only spaces!
Her behaviour and language is inflammatory and appalling much of the time.....she is not fit to hold the position she does!

peanutbuttertoasty · 02/07/2024 09:59

She is so fucking thick and belligerent, and if she’s this easily strong armed by lobby groups she’ll be a national security risk to boot.

Having an eye on what is happening in a number of European countries I wonder if its crossed Keirs mind that forcing through unpopular laws can have a radical and scary reaction at the ballot box.

I very much doubt it.

I suspect Anglocentric exceptionalism.

I mean, foreigners, eh?

(Last line is sarcasm, for the avoidance of doubt )

There will be no clarity because they don't want there to be clarity. At the moment they are just saying anything and everything, in the hope that someone will be swayed and vote for them. It doesn't matter if they contradict themselves five minutes later.

I fully expect the answer (if I receive one) to fall on those lines.

The guy in question works with some of the most vulnerable women in society, though - some of whom he has splashed all over his campaign literature. I’m curious to see whether he has their safety and dignity at the forefront of his concern.

LunaNorth · 02/07/2024 08:29

Right, I’ve emailed my local Labour candidate asking for clarity on the issue of safe spaces for biological women before I vote on Thursday.

Let’s see if he replies.

Cismyfatarse · 02/07/2024 08:03

What about anyone who can asking if Eddie / Susie Izzard should be allowed to use the women's toilets as he did recently.

PronounssheRa · 02/07/2024 07:08

This begs the question: Now we have same sex marriage, what is the point of a GRC? And why should a GRC, in turn, allow for birth certificates to be falsified.

illinivich · 02/07/2024 06:42

"No. They don't have that right.
"They shouldn't. That's why I've always said biological women's spaces need to be protected."

He hasnt always said that, but at last he's said something. Hopefully the next Labour candidate on nick ferrari will be able to say directly that a man with a GRC cannot use the womens toilet, instead of just answering with patronisingly chuckle.

Here's an archived version of The Times interview quoted in the Sky article:

Keir Starmer: I want people to say Labour has made them better off

IwantToRetire · 02/07/2024 00:27

Asked if he will he meet Rowling? "I've indicated a willingness [to do so]."

Yes and she responded the first time he said it that she would meet him so long as representatives of various gender critical groups could be there as well.

That's the question he needs to be asked. Why he is refusing to meet them, particularly as his deputy has said one of them is a "hate" group.

Appears to be a Starmer update:

news.sky.com/story/election-2024-sunak-starmer-conservatives-labour-reform-lib-dem-12593360

Speaking to the same paper tonight, Sir Keir has said he is hopeful he can meet with the writer - who has been critical of trans women accessing single-sex spaces.

In a social media post at the end of last week, Rowling said: "Do biological males with gender recognition certificates have the right to enter women-only spaces?
"It's a simple yes/no question."

Asked about this by The Times, Sir Keir said: "No. They don't have that right.
"They shouldn't. That's why I've always said biological women's spaces need to be protected."

Asked if he will he meet Rowling? "I've indicated a willingness [to do so]."

His arse must be lacerated by now.

Maybe that's why he goes round looking as glazed and unsentient as a shop front mannequin. Just doped up with painkillers.

Edited - NB for MNHQ - this is a joke not an actual accusation!

Which is why he's sitting on the fence and not going full-Green in spouting TWAW right now.

He's a politician purely seeking power. I'm a firm believer of anyone who wants that is a narcissist. If he wins this election he won't care what happens in the next.

I wish Angela had been asked more about this supposed language that vulnerable women are scared of.

WickedSerious · 01/07/2024 09:59

IwantToRetire · 30/06/2024 20:59

Starmer was the only candidate from the 3 'finalists' who didn't sign it - he signed an alternative one, stating that 'TWAW' but that didn't call gc women's groups 'hate groups' or call for their expulsion.

I suppose he thinks we women should be grateful for the fact he is able to sit boths sides of the fence.

Lets hope he doesn't get a splinter.

A splinter?

His arse must be lacerated by now.
