Arrogantly complacent leaflet from Labour written as though Starmer is running for President

So far I have only had one leaflet re GE. It was from Tory candidate who set out how they thought they could represent the constituency.

But today I got a hand delivered (but addressed to me) a leaflet about voting fot Starmer.

Nothing why I should vote for the Labour candidate.

Nothing about the constituency, nothing about the work the candidate (former MP) has done locally.

Just a long list of Starmer's Labour superiority over the Tories, and how saint Starmer has saved the Labour party.

And then loathsome US style garbage about "service" and country.

It is obviously a standard leaflet that they have just mail merged the candidate's name and constituency name into, although stuck to the safe option of referring to the candidate as they.

Not sure who this is meant to appeal to. Or are they assuming everyone is on social media and geting information elsewhere. Not heard of any hustings.

I had heard that Labour had got trillions more donations than Tories for their election campaign, and cant think why they have used this to churn out such a non credible "why you should vote for me" leafleting.

Not forgetting I dispise him anyway, but genuinely cant think who thought this was a way to encourage people to vote for them.

@IwantToRetire

The thread was about my experience and actual fact.

It would have been factual had you posted an image of the leaflet. What you did post is anecdotal.

On the other hand maybe this suggested that in fact FWR is influential so it is necessary to start flying false flags.

😂

SnowFrogJelly · 02/07/2024 00:21

*You leapt in with over the top accusations about some sort of fraud, and because of what you have experienced in your area, it must be the same elsewhere.

I never know when something like this happens on a thread that someone is having a bad day or they are so upset about the image of FWR that they believe is negative, they have to come on FWR and tell us all that we are the source of being naughtly school girls who haven't accepted our homework with quiet passivity and keen intent to do what we are told*

Are you on glue?

I never said anything about fraud and I wasn't having a bad day

Your thread was in active discussions which is why I read it.. so I didn't'go on FWR' to tell anyone anything

Your narrow minded criticism of Labour and Kier Starmer prompted a reply

Really, really weird

Really not as weird as you starting a Starmer bashing thread

What is really, really weird is thinking a Starmer bashing thread on FWR is unusual.

Clearly you aren't paying attention to other threads. Why not take a look as see how many are focused on negative feelings about Labour.

Also the really, really weird idea that some how FWR is a hot bed of false information about Labour.

Who is it that you are so in thrall to that you have been led to believe this and why did you so passively accept it.

For heaven's sake.

The thread was about my experience and actual fact.

Others commented to say that had had the same, other that they had had more specific communications.

You leapt in with over the top accusations about some sort of fraud, and because of what you have experienced in your area, it must be the same elsewhere.

There's nothing weird about a Starmer bashing thread,he's less use than a sack of wet mice.

*Basically the leaflet is saying we dont trust local Labour candidates to say the right thing, so we will go on being bland.

Nobody must have an opinion.

Nobody must speak out of turn.*

Sorry but imho this is ridiculous. You may think your leaflet says whatever but where I live our Labour candidate has been active on social media since before the election was announced saying lots of things having lots of opinions being anything but bland

Some people like me, see an earlier post, have had several local leaflets but also received the generic one from Sir Keir Starmer. The generic one started off
Dear Firstname.
I'm not sure what it was trying to achieve. I'm a regular Labour voter and I wasn't impressed.

No I cant, and I dislike your implication that I am lying

Why can't you..

IwantToRetire · 30/06/2024 00:34

Can you upload a photo of the leaflet you have received OP

No I cant, and I dislike your implication that I am lying.

And if you had bothered to read the thread you will see that many others recognised it. Just because you didn't doesn't make it not true.

Seriously. As I said to another poster because you haven't experienced it doesn't mean its not true.

If we all followed you advice hardly any thread on FWR could function, because they are more often than not based on an individual's experience.

Added to which, and dont know how many times this had to be said, but posting photos of written text is an act of discrimination.

Anyone with a visual impairment, and / or relies on a speaking browser is automatically excluded by doing that.

So totally inappropriate to suggest that FWR should encourage users to do something that is discriminatory and excluding to users with visual disabilities.

I had the same letter delivered. I also have had two Labour canvassers and one Labour councillor knocking at the door. It a very safe Labour seat. The canvassers had loads of local knowledge, especially about any issues. I’ve just had two Reform leaflets which I used to make paper aeroplanes as they were too stiff to use as toilet paper.

Againname · 29/06/2024 13:58

As an update on my constituency.

A marginal. Conservatives that could go Labour.
So would've thought some campaigning here

Nope. Still nothing except one leaflet from the Conservative candidate.

Nothing else. No door knockers (I work from home so here a lot), and not even a leaflet from Labour, or anyone else.

I'm quite unimpressed as gives the impression tonme that despite being a marginal, none of the parties or local candidates are that bothered about here.

Still undecided but now considering spoiling my ballot for the first time ever.

GiveMeMySoddingCokeZero · 29/06/2024 12:08

I've had hardly any leaflets, despite the voting intention stats looking incredibly close for a good while now, and the potential for a Lib Dem win in a true blue Tory heartland area. Only had a fake newspaper from the Conservatives, and a Reform UK leaflet that luckily came through the letterbox when I was right by it, so I was able to immediately open the door and pop the miserable thing straight in my recycling bin, right in front of the person who delivered it. (That pleased me a lot more than it should've.) And we never get canvassers or anything like that.

There was a big box van seemingly made entirely of TV screen parked up next to the car park in town, though. Advertising Labour Shock Any other election, you'd hardly know there was such a thing as a Labour party round here. I mean, they stand someone, but I'd generally assume it's an inexperienced candidate doing it for practice — or someone they don't like, but have to put somewhere.

I didn’t say you’d made it up. It’s just that I’ve delivered 1,000s of leaflets during this election for the Labour Party in this election and none are as you describe. I can only conclude that candidates and their agents have leeway to make their own choices about what to share.

I wasn't referring to your comment.

I was referring to "there's a lot of shite doing the rounds at the moment".

This isn't shite or fake news, it's true. It's not even particularly scathing, just legitimate criticism of these campaign materials and labour hq and their advocates should welcome this mild, specific and actionable feedback rather than accuse us of putting shite on the Internet.

Butterflyfern · 29/06/2024 11:35

We've had both. One from Kier and a few from our local MP. Seems fine to me, you are after all in some way having to balance voting for local and national issues

I did also get one from Rishi, so it's not just Labour sending them out. The only thing I've had from the local Tory candidate is an old fashioned style poster saying "Kier Starmer needs you" and then in smaller writing listing some points about how awful he was. Trouble is, unless you actually made the effort to read it properly it looked like another pro labour leaflet 😂😁really bad design. No content at all about who out Tory candidate was or what they will do

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/06/2024 11:35

My partner had exactly the same leaflet @Temporaryanonymity - not in the areas mentioned.

Oops I didn't redact it everywhere! Nevermind

Mumoftwo1316 · 29/06/2024 09:39

In fairness though, I've since had a leaflet more personally about the candidate. I think I will vote for her, for the reasons I described above

Mumoftwo1316 · 29/06/2024 09:39

I'm really quite incensed at the pp above who implied that op and the rest of us have made this up.

I've redacted the name of the candidate and constituency to keep my location private. Everything is exactly as op described, including describing my female mp as "them" [penultimate para]

That’s not how the Labour leaflets work in my constituency. Where are you? I’ve been campaigning in general elections since forever and Labour don’t send out generic leaflets like the one you describe.

Well I got exactly the same letter as the op and I'm in Scotland.
Oh I should add it didn't even mention the snp

paasll · 29/06/2024 09:26

Leaflets can have the effect of being very irritating if they are pitched not quite right.

I agree with you OP. I think people are voting labour to get the tories out. Not because Starmer and his plans are good. Our labour candidate (I have the postal vote ballot paper) is the only one whose address is nowhere near our constituency.

people can think what they want ideologically about the private school debate, but the fact that the proposed tax is against EU law and could only go ahead as we have brexited ought to really make people think twice about what labour will hammer through with a large majority.

I don’t object to paying more tax to help the NHS or education - but Starmer’s ways of raising money are almost illegal.

Flowers4me · 29/06/2024 08:06

Our household also had a bland Labour leaflet; hardly anything on it about the person standing. In contrast, the LibDems and Cons leaflets had much more information about themselves and their plans for the local area. The Reform one was similar to the Labour one and ended in the bin. The Labour one, I ended up researching the Labour candidate and still could not find much about her so that was disappointing. I did wonder if Starmer HQ was exerting control over how local candidates could promote themselves but maybe the candidate is in such awe of Starmer that she doesn't feel the need to say much about herself? Either way I don't think its a good look and that leaflet ended up in the recycling bin too. As much as I want change, I cannot vote for Labour; am still mulling over what to do at the moment.

GiveMeMySoddingCokeZero · 29/06/2024 07:40

I'm voting tactically for Lib Dem, and my teeth are really suffering for it too, IncompleteSenten. The advantage over having to vote tactically for Labour is, I suppose, that successfully voting in a Lib Dem would get rid of the Tory MP, but almost certainly won't help put the Lib Dems in government.

I'm in a new constituency made up of parts of two very Tory constituencies. My old constituency was Tory from the time it was created in the 80s until its replacement this year. In fact you have to go back to 1906 to find the last time the constituency my town is located in voted for a non-Tory MP. And there seems to be a reasonable chance that we might do it again for the first time in over a century, so I feel I have to try and help that happen. But it means voting Lib Dem, which for obvious reasons sits very badly with me. Ugh. It's horrible, isn't it?
