Not much info about this yet, but just saw it on Twitter.

candidate in Leeds has been threatened with arrest for the leaflets she distributed on a charge of malicious communications.

I haven't scrolled back to the original screenshot but assuming the one Freda posted above is genuine. I do wish that PoW had re-thought the header to that last lot of points.

That said, I have no idea what their (Edited to clarify I mean Freda's) post is about.

Cis gender, like any of the many dozens of genders, is something an individual can choose to be.

If you wake up one day and think "I would like to buy into the dogshit bundle of sexist homophobic tropes and stereotypes historically associated with people of my sex" then you're cis gender.

I'm not into that, personally.

Cis isn’t a slur imo. It can be used in a sneering contemptuous way and then it is used as an insult, but it’s not a slur otherwise. It’s a word used to describe a made up concept to give legitimacy to a made up ideology. It’s offensive as it makes women a sub group if their own sex class. The ideas that underpin it are harmful to women. But I don’t see it as a slur. I do see it as an offensive term in a harmful ideology but I don’t see it as a slur within the terms of that ideology, no.

Perhaps this comes down to how you define ‘slur’.

It is a slur to me if I say it is. Twitter says it is, too, btw.
And frankly I'd love MN to ban it. For balance.

And everyone must respect that and not use it to and of me.

Or I'll throw all my toys out of the pram.

TRAs can say as many awful things about women as they like and that's fine. Say anything other than transwomen are women in every possible way and it's a transphobic slur.

It originated many years ago (probably 15+ years) on a message board called Something Awful. Users were called goons, trans users were called troons. It wasn't a slur particularly, or at least no more than the other language used between users of the site.

I'm confused. When I Google the word troon it tells me it is a town in Ayrshire. I'm not aware of any other usage.

Just because a word is in the dictionary doesn't mean it isn't a slur.

On the other hand, I don't think "fragile" can be termed hateful - if the cap fits...

The attempts to derail the thread by repeatedly telling us what a hateful slur 'troon' is are all very lovely, but the actual point of the OP is that an election candidate has been threatened with arrest for her leaflets, and the leaflets don't appear to actually use the word 'troon'. So what. specifically, are the 'malicious communications' she's being accused of in her election leaflet, and why is she (allegedly) being threatened with arrest?
