The problem for me is that the far right are blaming these incidents on the "foreign" values of the men committing the rape - when its really clear on some level the German authorities share those

I think this is right. Like happened to the Rotherham girls and others in the grooming gangs, with the police turning a blind eye.

No doubt those German all orifices on demand brothels ( and I think there are other nasty elements) are full of trafficked Eastern European very young girls too.

Yes, Liberal can be a very nasty thing.

Rotherham could never have happened without systemic misogyny.

And yes, the situation in Germany regarding the sex trade, is utterly repulsive.

Don't shut up! I do think I know exactly what you mean about how the Netherlands is perceived versus its reality.

Isn't the Netherlands perceived as Liberal, precisely because of its history of exploiting women?

mrshoho · 26/06/2024 18:03

Fucking he'll. What planet are we on that this paedophile has been selected to represent his country. No, you don't get to just wipe your criminal past. I'd there any moral code left in this world.

I tried to find the article in English but the problem is, if you google "gang rape, park, Germany" you get too many different stories to be able to find the right one. There is an additional angle to that story, which is that unfortunately the rapists were "not German born" and therefore I think there was a worry it would become a "far right talking point." So the far right are the only ones talking about it. The problem for me is that the far right are blaming these incidents on the "foreign" values of the men committing the rape - when its really clear on some level the German authorities share those values. So you have (some, not all) immigrants coming into a country with the idea that underage German girls are worthless/are there to be abused/rape isn't a big deal. And the response from Germans is "yes, German girls ARE worthless and absolutely can be abused. Rape isn't a big deal. What's more, we will arrest anyone who is mean to you about this". Its not a failure to integrate into German cultural values - they may be scum but they seem to have picked up the "values" of the German lawmakers fairly quickly.
I don't want to see a rise of the far right in Germany. But if I DID want to see it, I would be doing exactly what German policy makers have done for the past decade.

Also - Germany is a country which has brothels where you can, perfectly legally, pay for "all orifices" deals etc and the women can't refuse. This is very liberal, and very tolerant and progressive. And you can even get a free burger. Yay.

Yeah of course this goes on everywhere! Probably shouldn't have said anything, it's just weird to me that the Netherlands is seen in a particular way and that's not my experience.

Anyway I'll shut up now and message the Olympic Committee 😅

Please don’t shut up.

Sing your song. Tell your story. We all have a song or story to tell. Every note and every word is important and needs to be heard.

Must be heard.

@Magnethings articles here if you speak German (or want to use the translate function) Nachrichten aus Hamburg und der Welt - Hamburger Abendblatt . A few things - I said she was 14, she was actually 15. Also the articles talk about the defendants being "juveniles" but their age range would have been from 17 to 20 at the time of the crime so NOT little boys. Also there is quite a lot of focus in those articles on "threats against the judge" "adverse public reaction" which yes, threats aren't OK but its the balance of articles is weird.

I don't know why I feel so committed to posting evidence about this. I think its because its so awful it sounds like I'm making it up/imagined it but I checked and I'm not. Sorry for derailing the thread.

Thank you. I am glad you did. It gets buried but it is not part of a decent society at all.

To me that is not about being liberal or not liberal though. Just horrible.

I suspect the IOC won't accept this man and the whole issue will die down, except that I assume the Dutch will still allow him to win medals within the Netherlands. Very odd values on their part.

Does the article say where this happened in Berlin? Which park @biscuitandcake ?

It was Hamburg's Stadtpark. I read another German article about Berlin and got confused sorry. There is an (I think American) article here GERMANY: Woman Convicted Of “Offending” Migrant Gang Rapists Receives Longer Prison Sentence Than The Rapists - The Publica. They definitely have an "angle" however the information seems accurate. I tried to find the original article in german - I definately read about it a while ago, but as I said, the search terms I use keep turning up articles about different instances and I don't want to keep reading them to find the right one frankly.

I know it sounds like I sit around reading articles about rape in Germany all day. I don't. But I read German news/social media to keep my German good if that makes sense. And that story... stuck in the mind. Maybe it needs its own thread.

GERMANY: Woman Convicted Of “Offending” Migrant Gang Rapists Receives Longer Prison Sentence Than The Rapists - The Publica

A 20-year-old woman in Hamburg, Germany, has been sent to prison after making "hateful" remarks towards a migrant who was involved in the gang rape of a child. The woman is just one of 140 people being investigated for making "harmful comments" towards...

VisitationRights · 26/06/2024 16:06

Why is France allowing this? Why isn’t team GB protesting? I am so angry about this.

biscuitandcake · 26/06/2024 15:58

No evidence the woman convicted was far right by the way. At first I thought she had something racist or threatening to the man or had referred to his background as an immigrant. Nope. She even apologised for her language. Still went to prison.

Because he has served his sentence.

He is a convicted sex offender who should not be around children at all. There are children who compete at the Olympics. He should not be allowed to compete.

12 months for multiply raping a child? But he doesn't identify as a pedophile?

Wtf are the arrangements in the Olympic villages re safeguarding under 18s?

Excellent point about safeguarding. This is a convicted nonce.

It could be worse. There was a (really really unpleasant) gang rape of a 14 year old in a park in Berlin. (I won't go into details but it included multiple groups of men assaulting her over the course of a night, men sharing videos and the locations to group chats so more men could come and assault her). Of the 9 men convicted (on DNA evidence!), 8 were not given any prison sentence at all. And that's despite them being disrespectful in court/falling asleep etc. However, this case generated outrage and the contact details of some of the men were shared. A woman contacted one of the men describing him as "disgusting" and a "miscarriage". SHE got sent to jail for being offensive to him.

Anyone who says that being accused of rape ends a mans career/life or that we take rape seriously as a continent is talking out of their arse.

So we should be grateful he went to prison at all.

OK, so I emailed the Dutch Olympic Committee on [email protected]

I am writing to express my outrage that Steven van de Velde has qualified for the NL Olympic Volleyball team. This man travelled to the UK to rape a 12-year-old girl in 2016. He is not worthy of being an Olympian and brings the whole Netherlands team into disrepute. A rapist should not represent his country. A paedophile should not represent his country. I urge you to remove this man from the team.

I did this too. Thank you for the address.
