In fact you could be even more cynical and reason that that would be the main purpose of passing the law, based on the experience of the past few years.

But yes, absolutely.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 04/07/2024 12:38

how it has been used by interesting political lobbies to control and manipulate others and enforce their own agenda to the detriment of others and of equality of rights for all?
There are also fears it would be used as a de facto blasphemy law.

UpThePankhurst · 04/07/2024 10:34

There are those things packaged to sound like truly lovely ideas that no one sane could argue with, like hate crime, anti misogyny laws, anti conversion therapy laws...

and then you unpack what these would actually mean and look like in practice, with the hate crime/incident legal history and evidence of how that has worked in practice, what positive and negative impacts and unexpected consequences emerged, and how it has been used by interesting political lobbies to control and manipulate others and enforce their own agenda to the detriment of others and of equality of rights for all?

And you realise that anyone with sense who really understood all this would realise that all the shiny packaging does not contain anything good at present, and whether innocently or quite intentionally is being used to manipulate you into thinking that it is pure and good and innocent and enabling other darker agendas, and is best avoided.

Ironic given whether you agree/disagree with K.B she has been elected to SPEAK on behalf of others who have freely given her their vote.

Now K.B should challenge her own party that declined to legislate that misogyny against women as a hate crime. Despite sex being a P.C under the E.A. could have meant DT having to watch statements such as these and others when privileged men could potentially incite violence against women particularly those in positions of power themselves making it ok for the rest of misogynistic males.

Hate crime legislation is a minefield with unintended and unpoliceable consequences. KB does not support it.

I don't think KB is much of a supporter of hate crime legislation in general.

Yes, the slash fantasy and the real thing are very very different.

Has anyone done a write-up on slash fantasy? I noticed a whole genre of teen "gay fiction" in a bookshop window which I suspect might appeal most to straight girls.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 04/07/2024 08:38

I still think he's a good actor. Someone can be a very good actor and a tit in real life. Surely that's quite common? Actors usually have egos the size of planets or they couldn't do the job.

When he was in that fictionalised-reality drama during lockdown I found the personality he portayed and the relationship portrayed with his wife interesting but just a bit disturbing. Which he'd probably be quite happy with. And I was happy to watch as long as it stays on telly and doesn't affect me offstage.

UniversalAunt · 04/07/2024 08:30

As an aside, DT really does give me the ick.

I shudder when I hear yon chirpy Scots fellas narrations & voiceovers.
I make a mental note not to favour or buy that product or brand.

See also the shock FTMs encounter when they come across the "real" gay male dating scene rather than the slash fantasy of what gay male relationships are like.

Its a weird diversion for the conversation to take. But usually for heterosexuals, in general, its much easier for a woman to persuade a man to have casual sex with her than it is for a man to persuade a woman. Not saying its always the case. But come on - usually it is. Likewise, its easier for a gay man to persuade other gay men to have casual sex with him than it is for a straight man to persuade a woman. That doesn't mean all gay men just want casual sex, or are having casual sex all the time. Or that some gay men aren't treated as less attractive than others/have a harder time finding casual partners. Finding long-term partners is a different matter.
But its not controversial or wrong to suggest that gay men on average have more casual sex/more sexual partners. Because they are both men.

TempestTost · 02/07/2024 17:59

RantyRantington · 02/07/2024 16:00

I think that's a bit of a stereotype and perhaps should be avoided😬

Lots of stereotypes are statistically true, that's why they exist. It's statistically true that gay men have way more sex partners than straight men or women.

There is a ton of research around this, it's not controversial.

The "stereotype" is when we assume that general statistical truths about a group apply to every individual in a group. That assumption is a fallacy and won't always be accurate. And it's often unfair to individuals.

UtopiaPlanitia · 02/07/2024 17:54

@MaidOfAle I’m listening to a podcast where there’s a discussion about fanfic and the text-based nature of the internet and the confusing effect it could have on the sexuality of women and the idea of fictosexuality. You might find it interesting:

Well I'm not getting into an argument, but the pp didn't actually say
" there are multiple places, indoors and outside, in many cities where gay men have casual sex and that the same doesn't exist for lesbian women."
It was just the sauna reference.
But whatever.

Granted perhaps not all gay men engage with this scene, but it exists.

I mean - the idea that men in general have easy access to the sex they'd like it very far from the truth.

Unless they are David Beckham or are willing to use prostitutes, they almost certainly don't. Some are lucky to find a partner at all.

It is easier for men if they are gay though. There's multiple saunas in my city for that very purpose.

For lesbian or bisexual-but-seek-women women, good luck!

I can never have that kind of sex nor have that kind of inherently equal relationship with a man.

It is a really sad and strange thing to see women say this because, I know some gay men have great relationships, but all the gay men I've known have really struggled to find long lasting, exclusive partners. I don't think the gay dating scene is what some straight women and girls think it is.

I'm fed up of the Scene. I want a long term relationship. It's a cult of youth and I'm beginning to tire of it all.

If I had a pound for every time I've heard one of the above from my gay male friends. It's not all honey , gay or straight.

Theunamedcat · 02/07/2024 07:04

Your allowed to disagree with someone politically personally etc you shouldn't be allowed to wish them out of existence when you have a huge platform like David Tennant radicals exist and MPs have been attacked and even killed

I cannot respect a man whose entire argument is on the level of a two year old covering their eyes and ears willing people to not exist

Mermoose · 02/07/2024 06:38

Ha! True. I wish he would just stick to something harmless and cringey though.

This is really interesting, and though I didn't know many of the details you mentioned here it fits with my impression of him - he's subject to "audience capture". (I don't mean to imply that his behaviour isn't his fault, I think he's of an age where he should be well able to keep his head).

www.gurwinder.blog/p/the-perils-of-audience-capture

He's actually at exactly the age to get his head turned by the adoration of young fans (obviously not all middle aged people are like that before I get accused of ageism). But it has a very cringe "middle aged man tries to be down with da kids" vibe to it. Like a guitar playing vicar at a teenage youth club.

I agree, AO3 can be a blessing AND a curse. I started reading fanfic when it was only available on fan forums/old style fic archives/Webrings and LiveJournal so I thought AO3 was a great idea until it started going very weird in certain fandoms.

Reading about the idealised relationships in fanfic can be a bit tough at times, but it’s wish fulfilment (just like Mills and Boon can be) and so I don’t read fic when I’m in a bad mood because then it’s likely to exacerbate my grumpiness. Or, if I’m feeling disgruntled, I stick to genfic that concentrates on long complex plots.

I also think that, when it comes to relationships and sex in fic, the male characters in slash pairings wouldn’t be likely to be having the mind-blowing, multi-orgasmic impromptu sex in real life that a lot of these stories always include because that’s more like the sex female bodies have. So it reminds me to feel chuffed that female bodies are capable of great things that male bodies aren’t 😈

I got into fanfic as an adult so I absolutely agree with you that it’s definitely not a healthy thing for teenagers to get into because it can distort their views of adult relationships just as badly as video porn can. Plus, nowadays there’s a lot more activism and ideology involved in fanfic than there was in the past and kids can get sucked into that too before they’re mature enough to understand complex concepts.

Fan spaces can be a bit Lord of the Flies with kids creating their own online societies away from adult supervision (which definitely attracts weirdo men who look for kids to take advantage of). I wish media creators were more mindful of this aspect when trying to generate online buzz or when using social media or when actors are trying to raise their profile by adopting identities and causes.

In my whole life, one partner has brought me to orgasm without needing electromechanical assistance, once: a one-night-stand over 20 years ago. Men tend to orgasm reliably with a partner and it was this ability to orgasm at all with a partner to which I was referring. It probably won't surprise you to know that I am not and never have been multiply-orgasmic.

GO has always attracted "slash" (aka "two gay men") fan fiction, even before the mini-series. What's changed is that the actors and script writers are now aware of it and reacting to it. I doubt that Az and Crowley would have kissed if Archive Of Our Own wasn't chockful of fan fiction in which they do that and more.

I know that reading slash makes my dysphoria about my female body worse because, being female, I can never have that kind of sex nor have that kind of inherently equal relationship with a man. Luckily, I realised twenty years ago that I can't be a man, no surgery nor hormones can grant that, so I kept my healthy intact female body even though I'm not happy with it. Multiply that dysphoria-worsening effect by a zillion teens who've drunk the koolaid and think they can change sex or that their sex doesn't matter, and you get this shitstorm.
