KS is on course for a massive majority. So he can't be so desperate for the TRA voter base to need to pander to them. Therefore he must actually believe in this stuff.

The removal of spousal consent makes me so enraged.

My options are: spoil ballot or vote Communist Party who do have a candidate in my constituency.

When the Tory leadership contest starts I might also join them so I can vote for Badenoch. She's the only mainstream politician as far as I am aware who really, REALLY gets what's at stake here.

magicmole · 24/06/2024 09:14

Chickenuggetsticks · 24/06/2024 07:44

The removal of spousal consent is appalling, it was a way for women to exit marriages they no longer wanted to be. A transwoman can still obtain an interim GRC. Fucking awful for women.

What utter fucking bastards Labour are.

Particularly for women whose faith or culture means divorce is impossible; the interim GRC is grounds for an annulment instead. Why have Labour decided their rights and beliefs are less important than the desire of the person who transitions? As you say the claim that trans people are prevented from getting a GRC by the 'veto' is nonsense.

They think they can square the circle or at least sound like they are.

This is why journalists need to ask them about the detail.

What happens when a man tries to access a gym changing room (as an example)?

What if the man tells gym staff he has a gender certificate?

What then? Can the staff say no you can't go in?

If so great but what then is the purpose of these certificates?

What is the purpose of men being able to change their official documentation such as driving licence and birth certificate to say female?

Why are we officially recognising something called 'gender'?

What is 'gender'? What's the definition?

What is the purpose of all of this?

Men's rights elevated over women's rights.

TimGrantsNoAccessToWomen · 24/06/2024 09:08

the added challenge of not feeling comfortable in your body must be hugely difficult

Is it, aye? Gosh, imagine. Imagine feeling the challenge of not feeling safe or respected, of having your rights as a woman handed away, of being told you're in the wrong body and need to have it surgically altered to be the Real You, of not being allowed to name your sexuality for fear of being called a 'sexual racist', of being told your sexuality is a 'genital preference', of being told you are not a mother but a 'birthing body' or a 'uterus haver' or 'chest feeder'. Imagine not feeling comfortable in your body, or allowed to state your boundaries, or say 'no' to men. God knows women just have to live with it.

Oh god. I don't have time to read it until later but for the love of cheese, why did they have Starmer "clarifying" his position just last week, only to swing back the other way? Is this factions?

I'll bookmark it for lunchtime so I guess I'll get the answer then.

Because they haven't a clue what they are doing they don't understand the issues or the implications. And the reason for that is they have refused to listen to women. I worry that they view women as less important than men. That's why men get a voice and women don't.

They aren't getting my vote either.

Floisme · 24/06/2024 09:06

Right journalists, you've got 10 days to start doing your job and asking some questions of the party that is set to be our next government with a massive majority and no meaningful opposition.

Try and reconnect with your curiosity - I assume that's what first attracted you to the profession?

Just received this from my Labour candidate,

'As a woman, I am committed to defending the rights of women and safe spaces for women. I think we need to think carefully and thoughtfully about the knock on impacts of any proposals or legislation, as there are a very small minority who may seek to abuse those.

I am also conscious that life can be hard enough as it is, the added challenge of not feeling comfortable in your body must be hugely difficult. I know this often happens throughout puberty which is challenging enough as it is. This small percentage of the population is vulnerable and I think we should be supporting them.'

I'd asked about the transing of children, Cass, Rosie Duffield, single-sex spaces and got this back...

ScrollingLeaves · 24/06/2024 08:56

@Daffodilsugar
From what you have written I am guessing that you think that ‘being trans’ is equivalent to being gay.

You might be interested to read this informed response to Labour policies about gender as they affect gay men, by Denis Kavanagh who is himself gay, so perhaps you would trust him more than you would trust people posting here on this thread.

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/klinefelters-syndrome/

'Symptoms of Klinefelter syndrome

Klinefelter syndrome does not usually cause any obvious symptoms early in childhood, and even the later symptoms may be difficult to spot.

Many boys and men do not realise they have it.

Possible features, which are not always present, may include:

in babies and toddlers – weak muscles and very flexible (hypermobile) joints, learning to sit up, crawl, walk and talk later than usual, being quieter and more passive than usual, having undescended testicles, only one testicle, or a smaller penis
in childhood – shyness and low self-confidence, problems with reading, writing, spelling and paying attention, mild dyslexia or dyspraxia, low energy levels, and difficulty socialising or expressing feelings
in teenagers – growing taller than expected for the family (with long arms and legs), broad hips, poor muscle tone and slower than usual muscle growth, reduced facial and body hair that starts growing later than usual, small, firm testes, and enlarged breasts (gynaecomastia)
in adulthood – inability to have children naturally (infertility), low sex drive, small, firm testes, and erection problems.'

I'd never heard of that syndrome, I was thinking of Intersex where someone is born with both sets of reproductive organs - but perhaps they don't have XXY chromosomes.

Either way, definitely not voting Labour!

Retiredfromthere · 24/06/2024 08:54

I can't vote Labour, it's too scary. If there are enough votes for GC parties might it encourage opposition in the new parliament to stand ground against Labour and try to slow progress? Hoping so. Spoiling ballot paper does not work for me. But voting not Labour, LibDem or Green. All of which I have in the past voted for. Sigh.

CaveMum · 24/06/2024 08:52

Right now I have visions of JKR rolling up her sleeves in front of her computer and preparing to launch a war of words. I for one am right behind her, I was starting to waiver and consider voting Labour but now, not on your life.

I definitely don't want to derail this thread around this (people born XXY are mercifully very rare) but I thought they often also had a uterus/cervix/ovaries etc? Is that not the case- do they just have an extra X chromosome and a penis?

PuffyFluffin · 24/06/2024 08:45

RainWithSunnySpells · 24/06/2024 08:40

No, you have misunderstood something very important.

Boys and men who have Klinefelter syndrome (XXY) are male.

They are not women with an extra 'Y', they are men with an extra 'X'. Remember all men have one X anyway.

That Y will have the SRY gene that means the foetus follows the male development pathway.

I definitely don't want to derail this thread around this (people born XXY are mercifully very rare) but I thought they often also had a uterus/cervix/ovaries etc? Is that not the case- do they just have an extra X chromosome and a penis?

I've posted on this topic before, and as more is being revealed about Labour's cosy relationship with men pretending to be women, the more adamant I am that I won't vote for them. I owe this to myself, and the women of this country and the girls who will be impacted this, so that when Labour are running the country in a couple of weeks at least I can know that I didn't back their terrible disregard for women.

I want women to be defined as anyone who has two X chromosomes (and yes, that includes those poor unfortunate souls born XXY (if that's what they want) since they didn't choose that).

I don’t understand why they think this is so important that they won’t budge on it. The only explanation is that they think it’s in some way a cheap win - but why? Polling suggests that more people oppose it than otherwise, and it shows them as lacking any notion of reality, scientific/ medical evidence or common sense.

I think it's because they believe it's a popular policy with young people and they're going after the youth vote. See also reducing voting age.

Also, it won't cost them any money.

And Anglocentric exceptionalism - even if they've noticed what has happened in Europe, they believe the UK is different.

ScrollingLeaves · 24/06/2024 08:30

@Daffodilsugar
because trans people are born that way

There is evidence that children and young people, who are autistic, gay but living in a homophobic setting, in care, sexually abused, or traumatised by a serious life event, are disproportionately likely to present with a feeling of body and gender dysphoria. For them the idea they are in the wrong body, but can change, can appear to. present a solution.

There has also been an exponential rise in the numbers of children presenting themselves as gender questioning. Often there will be a cluster within one class at school. They are also being heavily influenced by the internet, just as they have by self-harm, and anorexia sites.

Children who are gender non conforming - more effeminate or masculine in their tastes when compared to social expectations of male and female stereotypes, can be seen by homophobic adults as being trans.

No, these children were not just born trans.

They definitely were not born full of harmful cross sex hormones, castrated with a wound for a vagina, or with a false penis and their breasts cut off.

Tootsweets23 · 24/06/2024 08:30

Ggrrrrrr I realise I'm ranting (and another thing!) but this is also just bad politics. Everyone knows that Labour hasn't sealed the deal with the electorate. The polling isn't an endorsement or enthusiasm for Labour, it is fury with the tories.

To take such an unpopular position on a contentious subject in the last weeks of a campaign, thus ensuring even more coverage of JKR's criticisms is just really really bad strategy. It is the political equivalent of sticking a "JK kick here" sign on your own bollocks.

It does suggest that the leadership might have started believing the polls though. Hubris always a danger.

I don’t understand the drama about this, I really don’t.
The only thing regarding trans people that is actually an issue is people who have gone through male puberty competing in female sports - maybe a third category of sports events would solve that but even so, not all people are into competitive sport so it stands to reason not all trans people are. It’s probably not that much of an issue.
I really don’t see how making it easier for people who are struggling, because trans people are born that way they aren’t doing it for a laugh is destroying women’s rights. For a start there are transitions both ways and there have been trans people since time immemorial, they just didn’t have the voice.
It seems incredibly selfish to want to deny a group of people, most of whom you will never meet, happiness.
All I ever read on here is - we need single sex spaces. I don’t understand why, these people aren’t out to get you they are living their own lives. And let’s be honest once a trans woman has gone through the dressing over the top wearing too much make up stage that all of us went through as teens when we became women, you don’t even know. They look like the rest of us. You might well have known trans people in your life and had no idea.
Think Mumsnet is an echo chamber of fear on this issue. I don’t need to tell you to think about the way other groups of people have been treated in the past - you know it. Trans people have the same impact on your life as those other groups did people in the past - none whatsoever.
And if the new government will make it easier for people to find happiness then good for them.

How lovely for you that these men have had no impact on your life, maybe you should take the time to read the Trans Widows threads in order to see what a devastating impact they've had on other women's lives.

Labour won't budge because they don't care. They know they will win, so are just happy to mouth some platitudes.

They are about to get a large majority, they will take it as support for their stance
