Labour to simplify ‘undignified’ gender transition process

Well, no surprise but I think this is a huge fuss about nothing.
At the moment the process specified you have to "live in your affirmed gender" for 2 years. Which is nonsense as "living as a woman" for example says nothing.
Labour are saying you notify them you want to change gender, then there is a 2 year period before the certificate is granted. Plenty of time to get divorced, so that probably is why they are OK getting rid of the exit clause. Long enough to be a hassle for anyone just doing it on a whim, so should weed out opportunists. And it still requires a doctors diagnosis.

Worth saying the Conservatives aren't planning to repeal the GRA so it's all splitting hairs.

Lot of noise over nothing really.

But the Conservatives are not planning on making it so much easier; and it is not just a case of getting a no fault divorce as you say.

The biggest noise deafening me, though, is Labour’s plan to not implement
what I consider to be a safeguarding policy regarding ‘gender’ in the the Conservative’s new school guidance policy; and the fact that the shadow education secretary seems unaware of what certain concerns actually are in the first place.

I am also deafened by the noise of what has happened to Rosie Duffield, and how Labour Women’s Declaration were denied a stall by KS. These are reasonable people worthy of respect who are not and never have been transphobes.

There are other noises, but enough of this for now.

Chariothorses · 24/06/2024 13:27

@Clabony Yep!
Am I right in thinking there's a mumsnet tradition of discussing baking recipes when that happens? (Not that I will do so- I hate cooking!)

Clabony · 24/06/2024 13:24

The new shift of nothing to see here must start just after lunch.

Let’s!!! If enough of us do it and lobby hard enough we might have a functioning opposition in time to frighten Labour into softening on at least some of this. Even seeing a significant bump for Tory membership might help Sir Keir get his flip flops on.

I am thinking of it, but want to double check the voting rights first.

My bet is that Labour will come up with a perfectly sensible policy that recognises trans rights but protects children, protects women's safe spaces, and also protects the position of women in sport etc. And all this fuss will thump to earth like a damp squib.

Now is the time to show us though, rather than bets and finger crossed 🤞

Niminy · 24/06/2024 12:58

@Melroses yep agree to all that. I think though Labour particularly liable though because captured public sector/third sector orgs and staff see themselves as natural Labour allies. It will be an easy 'win' for Labour when the difficulties of, say, managing the energy transition without sacrificing living standards or controlling immigration without increasing labour costs become apparent.

nauticant · 24/06/2024 12:54

So once again it begs the question what is the point? A special certificate that acknowledges someone's feelings in their head but does nothing practical?

I believe that it started off as being an administrative thing, for a tiny number of people who lead quiet lives etc, but then with the rise of the new and aggressive cohort wtih particular motivations, it has become weaponised into something of great value for trans activists. It's a document that can forever remain hidden that creates uncertainty for those who would like to maintain boundaries but are too intimidated to do so. It's sort of like an Trojan horse in invisible document form.

SilverElf · 24/06/2024 12:45

Clabony, and sadly the majority of them won’t know what she stands for.

I think the deliberate obfuscation (looking at you Kier) is absolutely repellent.

Clabony · 24/06/2024 12:37

I've had a leaflet through the door from Ashley Dalton (Equalities). MP for West Lancs. No one knocked, but posted, and ran away. Safe Labour seat, thanks to the support of the likes of Skelmersdale.

Not a mention of her LGBTQ++++ support which she usually bangs on about.(The handful of young white men in frocks, and their pals, have gone home from the local uni. Wrong time of year for their votes.)

Whether it's on potholes, anti-social behaviour, flooding, public transport, or SEND provison, I will always stand up for you.

My Constituency Story
How I've been working for you
I started a community conversation of public transport and have been holding the Government to account on the promised money for transport projects in the North
I have also raised the issues of SEND provison in Parliament and have been working with local farmers to resolve issues of flooding in our community

If she's so Proud of her LGBTQ blah credentials which she feels are sooo important the rest of the year, why stay schtum in this local leaflet for local people? Why isn't she saying what she's supporting as Shadow Minister for Equalities? Surely we should be told?

Perhaps because the locals, both townies and country, will say what the actual fuck?

Chariothorses · 24/06/2024 12:33

@ScrollingLeaves
Yes the GRA section 12 and Freddy MCConnell Supreme Court judgement are supposed to protect children of transpeople from this coercive control and emotional cruelty.
https://childrenoftransitioners.org/2023/04/10/paperwork/

But because trans lobby groups keep losing in court (as the courts prioritise child welfare over parental fantasies), trans activists are using workplace/ school policies to undermine the law protecting children's wellbeing and human rights instead.

Paperwork

It’s been an important week for children of transitioners in the UK and Europe, as the European Court of Human Rights has ruled that trans people do not have the right to alter their child&#8…

Do you get a right to vote within the party for who is PM and so on?

I think there's a time frame e.g 3 months. So possibly anyone joining now would not be able to vote if Sunak resigns on 5th July..

ScrollingLeaves · 24/06/2024 12:29

Do you get a right to vote within the party for who is PM and so on?

You have to be a member for a certain amount of time (think it’s 2-3 months) but then you become eligible to vote in Leadership elections as well as selecting your local candidate.

I’m very tempted.

I'm actually slightly incredulous that this is where I've ended up. Holy crap.

HRTFT

Wes Streeting on NF on LBC this morning saying they will simplify it and what you wear is not an indication of your gender. He said his mother, nieces etc don't wear dresses and we shouldn't use dress as a way of confirming someone is trans.

So they are saying that it really is just feelings. So you can get a new birth certificate, driving licence, passport etc without changing anything about the way you look as that doesn't prove you are 'living as the opposite gender'. Frankly nothing proves you are living as the other gender because we all live how we want within our sexed bodies.

Can they not see what they are doing?

A transwoman called in and repeated about all the 'lower' surgery and how they had all been documents changed and how difficult it was. NF then asked if still had to have prostate checked - of course!

The only way this will work is if it's acknowledged that gender is completely different to sex and having a different gender does not give you access to the other sexed spaces/orisons/sports etc,

So once again it begs the question what is the point? A special certificate that acknowledges someone's feelings in their head but does nothing practical?

This could be extended to all kinds of feelings people have about themselves which don't match reality.

He was on LBC this morning saying that he was 'disappointed' in JKR, persecuted minority, just want to live their lives, terribly hard to get a GRC blah blah blah.
I thought he had turned a corner and now realise that he has not. Depressing.

He's a lying liar just as he always was.

I had hoped I was being cynical by not trusting him.

Oh, well.

@Thelnebriati Yes at a time when mums will be distressed and struggling financially due to what has happened, trying to support traumatised children, and dealing with ostracism from religious communities
https://www.jewishnews.co.uk/charedi-woman-manchester/

That is extraordinary. Family courts normally allow the father (in this case transwoman) to see their children, even have 50/50 custody, no matter what, to a ridiculous extreme -
even if they have been a serious abuser in many cases. Look up Family Court on Mumsnet to see.

This judge must be very strong minded and unusual. It is good he recognises the harm this man’s choice to be transgender would potentially have on the children.

Look at that book in a poster’s child’s primary school, ‘She’s my Dad’ guilting a child into accepting their father becoming a transwoman ( written by just such a dad).

Well if this is their approach then they are even shitter at politics that I thought. The time to come up with a marvellous compromise that will be fine is now whizzing past and you can see it in the rear view mirror.

I can see we are going to have more women having to raise money for court cases & tribunals inorder to protect our rights.
It never bloody ends does it Angry.

Unfortunately, that may not even be an option if Labour change the laws (statutes?)which our carefully constructed case law is based on. Then potentially we will all have to join the religion or lose our jobs (and worse)

Chariothorses · 24/06/2024 12:16

there are several links to families of different religions affected by this in this 'Children of Transitioners' article

I can't remember where I read the prediction that once in power Labour will actually have very little room for manoeuvre on economy/foreign policy/health/social care/net zero (ie all the big issues), and will risk alienating their support. They'll move rapidly to socially liberal policies and actions because a) things like self ID, or reversing schools guidance are things they can actually do, and b) it will make it seem that they are actually doing things. I find that an absolutely compelling prediction, and I see this morning's development as a signpost of where we are going.

I agree - I think this is something that affects all governments and it is what has been happening for some time.

I wonder how much effect government actually has on big issues these days.

But, like management in big organisations, they have to be seen to be doing something.

My understanding is the annulment option in the GRA was to stop the state directly interfering in the human rights of individuals eg to practice their religious beliefs, not to be forced into a same sex marriage without their consent (as this directly conflicts with their right to practise religious belief, marry as they choose, and human rights).

If Labour's change to the spousal exit clause does come about, it would be awfully interesting if a transwidow were to take her case to the EHRC on the grounds that the new process breaches her human rights.

I think it would also help a lot for those whose Catholic religion forbids re marriage in the church following divorce.A legal annulment would make it possible, I think.

You don’t have to be religious though to find it a breach of trust to be married to someone who says they were a woman, or man, all along.
