I wonder how and when the spouse find out that their partner has been granted a GRC?

Oh look. KS won't allow 'gender ideology' to be taught in schools.
But it's fine to teach that women are toxic and you must be kind children.

Keir Starmer will not allow ‘gender ideology’ to be taught in schools

So which one of them is telling the truth?! It’s so confusing and dispiriting!!

They keep flipping and flopping and sometimes things improve a bit (like them saying they would like to meet with JKR) and sometimes (like today re GRC changes & spousal exit clause) things get a lot worse.

Just listening to a discussion on Times Radio with Andrew Neil. Proceeded by Helen Joyce, then discussed by Michael Gove and Harriet Harman. Harman was incredibly depressing. I'm out, they've sold women down the river. Completely. Worth a listen to on catch up.

Let’s be honest, Harriet has always been of the not-very-smart Be Kind” variety - look at who else she’s been happy to pander to in the past…,

similarminimer · 24/06/2024 14:36

Is the arguement here that GRC should be abolished? So a situation where there can be no eg passport with a female marker for any biological male?

I don’t see why it would be a huge administrative burden to phase in ID documents that register sex and, where needed, “identified gender” or similar wording.

It allows people to respect the life choices of a trans person day to day and also prevents the obfuscation of actual biology.

but if they were after compromise from the start we wouldn’t be where we are now!

And hence Labour can come up with weaselly stuff about how the spousal exit clause isn't really needed any more because no-fault divorce is available now. But in practice, as PP make clear, it's not that simple.

EasternStandard · 24/06/2024 14:34

LBC covering this atm

Presenter doing very well but male caller giving away women’s rights and going on about ‘cisgender’ etc

Men doing this is so irritating

ResisterRex · 24/06/2024 14:32

You can still divorce for any reason

Not for women from certain religions, no. This is a very important point on which the whole thing could easily turn, were there to be a legal challenge.

Chariothorses · 24/06/2024 14:18

@Grammarnut
No a wife cannot 'veto' a GRC now. it's just an 'exit by annulment' clause to protect her human rights. If she doesn't want to have her sexual orientation forcibly converted/ recorded as lesbian (ie by remaining married to a husband who says he's a woman), or her religion forbids divorce or same 'sex' marriage, he is issued with an 'interim GRC'. Either party can use this to apply for an annulment.

You can still divorce for any reason.

OvaHere · 24/06/2024 14:17

Grammarnut · 24/06/2024 14:11

They are removing the right of a wife/partner to veto a GRC. Does this mean that becoming trans will no longer be cause for a divorce?

A spouse could never veto a GRC. A spouse had the right to annul the marriage before a certificate was issued so the spouse (in the case of heterosexual women) didn't end up legally speaking in a same sex marriage.

This is what they want to remove. An annulment can be a quicker process than a divorce and in some religions a divorce is not permitted or carries more judgement for a woman than an annulment.

I was a Big Labour Activist. (Leafletting more than three streets at a time a speciality - just saying - for the benefit of the be kind volunteer)

This continuous fudge and failure to clarify is really pissing me off now.

I'd like to vote Labour, but being bullshitted endlessly and patted on the head and being told it'll all be ok, isn't the way to get my vote.

I don’t understand the drama about this, I really don’t.
The only thing regarding trans people that is actually an issue is people who have gone through male puberty competing in female sports - maybe a third category of sports events would solve that but even so, not all people are into competitive sport so it stands to reason not all trans people are. It’s probably not that much of an issue.
I really don’t see how making it easier for people who are struggling, because trans people are born that way they aren’t doing it for a laugh is destroying women’s rights. For a start there are transitions both ways and there have been trans people since time immemorial, they just didn’t have the voice.
It seems incredibly selfish to want to deny a group of people, most of whom you will never meet, happiness.
All I ever read on here is - we need single sex spaces. I don’t understand why, these people aren’t out to get you they are living their own lives. And let’s be honest once a trans woman has gone through the dressing over the top wearing too much make up stage that all of us went through as teens when we became women, you don’t even know. They look like the rest of us. You might well have known trans people in your life and had no idea.
Think Mumsnet is an echo chamber of fear on this issue. I don’t need to tell you to think about the way other groups of people have been treated in the past - you know it. Trans people have the same impact on your life as those other groups did people in the past - none whatsoever.
And if the new government will make it easier for people to find happiness then good for them.

Haha
Are you trying to seed juicy information for data scrapers?
We don't hate trans we support women. We don't like the Tories but we don't trust labour. Hope that helps.

ResisterRex · 24/06/2024 13:51

"I'm not angry, I'm just really disappointed in you"

???

But it might not be the most advisable stance.

dougalfromthemagicroundabout · 24/06/2024 13:50

OvaHere · 23/06/2024 23:21

Phillipson said she was “genuinely sorry to hear” of Rowling’s doubts and she had a “real degree of respect” for the author and added: “I would say really, do judge us on what we’ve done in the past to support women”.

Yeah that is what we're judging you all on Bridget.

THIS.

Also, I'm sick of the blatant propaganda that getting a GRC is 'undignified'. Getting an easyjet flight is demonstrably more undignified than getting a GRC.

Any woman having to see penises in spaces labelled 'women only', possibly with their young children, is far more 'undignified' and affects more people. Also is a safeguarding issue.

What about Dolatowski's child victim? Was the crime against that child less dignified than getting a GRC?

At what point do women and children matter, Phillipson, and how many have to be harmed before you're willing to place their dignity above indulging male wants you massive handmaiden.

Disappointed.

We're letting everyone down. All we need to do is be kind and be quiet!

I am thinking of it, but want to double check the voting rights first.

You can vote after three months of membership. I think it’ll take around that for them to announce the contest and go through the opening rounds.
