To Nick Ferrari on LBC that transwomen with a GRC will not be allowed in female single-sex spaces? It sounded like it. Is this a clear move or does it still leave wriggle-room? I’m not sure.

Rosie's response

So from now on, I shall be submitting my every comment and thought (particularly those mainstream views which most people agree with) to the former Labour Prime Minister so that it may officially be de-toxified...

The video's in. Despicable.

Hiding behind Tony Blair and the murder of a child to discuss women’s rights is unforgivable.

The abuse @RosieDuffield1 has received from the trans lobby has been disgusting yet this is the best Starmer can offer.

I have just had my postal vote arrive, and boy was it depressing.
I don't ENJOY being in that "can't unsee it now" state that do many of us are in. I don't WANT to spoil my vote.
Nor, right now, do I feel at all like voting for any of the candidates on the sheet.
Uurgh.

BBCQT… Kier Starmer answered the question about the abuse of Rosie Duffield with a bit of whataboutery by referring to Sunak “making a trans joke in front of the mother of a murdered trans teenager.”

Message to KS from - I suspect - many women who want to vote Labour but doubt their commitment to upholding the rights of women as a sex class: when we ask questions about women, about the abuse of women, about the silencing of women we are not asking for a monologue about how vulnerable trans people are. We are asking what you will do to uphold the rights of women as a sex class. And every time you ignore the questions women ask about their concerns to re-centre the conversation on trans issues, more women question Labour’s commitment to uphold women’s rights.

I can't believe he did that again - I thought that maybe the first time he referred to the murder of that poor child when asked about Rosie Duffield that he was caught on the hop and blurted out the first thing that came into his head. But now we have a second example of him doing it - it's his bloody strategy, innit?! I lose more and more respect for that man every time I see him interviewed.

They call him Captain Flip Flop but he's absolutely dead certain where he stands on the issue of Rosie Duffield and that is off to the side and letting anyone attack her who feels like it, he won't defend her on the issue of women's rights.

I saw this. It was very telling. He said he agreed with Blair but the question was about Duffield and what she said.

Sounded like the Labour instructions are"FGS don't agree with Rosie, whatever you do".

I thought his handling of the question demeaned Rosie and her experiences within the party. He also didn't answer how he would bring people together/cool it down (the follow up question). Just that he'd be better at it than others, which isn't an answer. He looked a bit panicked at that question.

And this guy is going to be our next PM with a majority of 300+. Oh my days.

lcakethereforeIam · 20/06/2024 22:27

Didn't he default to that poor child's murder when he was in a similar situation on breakfast TV? I think it was about Rosie's treatment too.

He uses that poor child's murder every time he's in a difficult situation about his & Labour's treatment of Rosie. Using a murdered child to deflect attention away from his lack of moral courage is worrying behaviour for a potential prime minister.

He was willing in 2004, together with his government, to create the legal lie that a man with a penis is a woman for all purposes ( with some exceptions provided someone has the money and time to prove in court that there is a proportionate means and proportionate end for them); and to give them a birth certificate to lie with.

The exceptions aren't in the Gender Recognition Act 2004, though. They are in the Equality Act 2010 - after one or two teensy problems had been spotted. (Slight sarcasm there.)

The GRA just has the infamous Section 9 "Where a full gender recognition certificate is issued to a person, the person's gender becomes for all purposes the acquired gender (so that, if the acquired gender is the male gender, the person's sex becomes that of a man and, if it is the female gender, the person's sex becomes that of a woman)."

Thank you for the correction that the exceptions are (supposed to be) in the Equality Act.

Except for the peerages stuff...where they absolutely did not want the GRC to mean a change of sex in law...

Even that wasn't all purposes. Not if inheritance of a title was involved.

What a mistake of a law

I have been in hospital many times, as a patient and as a visitor. Many of you will have been too.

The idea of a single sex ward has been a myth for decades - in my experience you have mixed wards with single sex bays and separate toilets for M/F. Baths and showers are generally for use by either sex if they are single occupancy. I genuinely don’t have a problem with this.

I have also been a patient where a BAY was mixed sex but this was a surgical assessment unit where we were all pretty sick and just had to be put somewhere before moving on. This didn’t bother me either and the men in there were actually very respectful. Not ideal, but an extreme situation I’m sure.

I have been treated intimately by both men and women. Would it bother me if one was trans? Yes, I think it would because I just don’t ‘get’ why people feel the need to be trans, but that’s my issue, not theirs. I have four friends who have adult trans children in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s so I am acquainted with trans people, and they are great, but I wouldn’t want them in my intimate space, that would feel weird.

Anyhow, I’ve voted Labour by post today as we’ve got to do something to get the bastard Tories out and splitting the vote to the minority parties won’t help. Best of a bad job.

Quite the way with words he has 😂

I used to (and occasionally still do) find Brendan irritating but I find myself being pushed more and more into the heterodox box by IDPol adherents so I have a better understanding as to why (contrarian) voices like O’Neill’s are a useful thing to have in a functioning democracy.

Thank you, tff he at all seems right and I agree Cowardly Keir is a fitting name.

I am not sure why Tony is Holy in anyway though.

Toseland · 20/06/2024 13:52

Would these side rooms be on the women's ward though?!

duc748 · 20/06/2024 13:45

Same here, but you can't find much to argue with in that piece. His behaviour has been spineless and frankly insulting to women.

illinivich · 20/06/2024 12:22

Starmer is stumbling into a problem of his own making. How is he going to justify his 'modernisation' of the GRA?

If women don't have a cock, why is he making it easier/less bureaucratic/ for cock owners to get female id? What is the purpose?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 20/06/2024 11:36

Well said Brendan:
"What kind of man is so morally weak he can be marshalled to the maddest of causes? It is surely a testament to Starmer’s opportunism, to his unanchoring from both political principle and moral decency, that he became ensnared by an ideology of pure untruth. Fine, he’s come to his senses, but that begs the question – when might he lose them again?"

@blackcherryconserve Though not about making GRCs easier to get, if you have not yet seen it, have a look at this thread and the document from The Gay Men’s network posted there in the OP.

GMN Labour Manifesto response

So many points are brilliantly, concisely and measuredly explained, by the writer who is a lawyer.

blackcherryconserve · 19/06/2024 18:42

Thanks. I couldn't see reference to it in the manifesto.
