To Nick Ferrari on LBC that transwomen with a GRC will not be allowed in female single-sex spaces? It sounded like it. Is this a clear move or does it still leave wriggle-room? I’m not sure.

Venice Allan interviews Wes Streeting. He's clear but I picked up on it will take time. Seems like the Culture War won't cease on day 1.

Excellent job by Venice by the way.

Oh dear. Looks like Streeting is thinking about the sort of separate cubicle solution that nobody likes for toilets. The women don't mind sharing with each other Wes!

ResisterRex · 18/06/2024 11:56

Wes. With a bit less of a weasley answer. Two issues:

  1. Cubicles presumably carry some risk for observation on patients as it is harder for staff to see across the ward. I'm thinking medically as well as checking who's accessing adult and child, male and female patients when they should not be (Savile type scenarios)
  1. Designing hospitals differently seems like an excellent way to kick this can down the road. Just say you'd LOVE to have done more but there was no money. But if re-elected, you'll DEFINITELY do it.

Thing is Keir blokes are already in women's toilets, changing rooms, wards, sports, awards, short lists...the RSPB ffs advertises 'women only walks' that they explicitly state anyone can identify into. It's happening now with or without a GRC. What's to stop this dismal situation continuing. Sure men can be excluded, but they aren't. If obtaining a GRC is made easier, more men will feel emboldened to violate women's spaces. I can't see M&S suddenly telling them no.

Edited

Exactly.

The GRC is a red herring. It's not because of a legit GRC that men are imaging women's spaces wholesale.

No one is checking on the door!!

This shit show is what happens when you try to reorganise society around a vague and undefinable feeling that some people have, rather than a clear observable set of characteristics.

Why is this so difficult for otherwise intelligent people to comprehend?

theilltemperedclavecinist · 18/06/2024 11:51

When he says 'sex' he means 'gender' identity

I think not. When he talked about women with penises, he meant legal sex. But what he said to Ferrari can only be construed as saying that single-sex spaces for women and girls, which are 'important', must be based on birth sex. He's a lawyer: he knows what he's saying.

It's not illegal to ask someone their birth sex, or whether they have a GRC, or whether they are trans. And for most purposes, we could go back to relying on the evidence of our eyes.

DrNickedMaCorpus · 18/06/2024 11:46

If a GRC changes sex then how can a hospital exclude? The NHS record on self ID.

Starmer sounds reasonable until you look at how his promise would work in reality.

Plus look at what he's not saying.

No apology to Rosie Duffield.

No clarity on conversion therapy.

No clarity on how sex is defined in the EA.

It's just enough to piss off tras and not enough to reassure women.

Sloejelly · 18/06/2024 11:45

On the ERCC case, I think I am right in saying we haven’t had the hearing for compensation? It would be interesting to see what the judge makes of the lack of action, or apology, by ERCC when it comes to that.

But still somehow, because no one has a backbone, has a job.

Because the board, who would be the ones to sack him, are all captured recent Edinburgh graduates who were also criticised by the judge. OSCR are toothless and most of the funding comes from a Scottish government pushing this agenda.

Gettingmadderallthetime · 18/06/2024 09:43

If you cannot ask someone whether they have a GRC, or ask to see it, even if you are police (have I got that right?) then this is the only way to protect single sex spaces. Especially if a GRC requires no physical change, low boundaries re medical assent, and is only a fiver. Maybe this is what Labour plan to do ... make a GRC easier but not make it a golden ticket to female spaces.

This - if its what he said - could lead to interesting situation at Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre where their CEO is a transwoman with a GRC.

I think Mridhul Wadwha doesn’t have a GRC

I don’t see how Labour can make this work if a man can have a birth certificate saying he is female and it is illegal to see a GRC

CocoapuffPuff · 18/06/2024 11:19

You know, I'm starting to understand the impulse to turn to extreme violence that many men have, irrespective of how pretty their skirt or twirly their hair.

Datun · 18/06/2024 11:08

DrNickedMaCorpus · 18/06/2024 11:00

Agree.

What I'll also say is that if someone suggests additive/additional spaces, the whole issue evaporates.

Because those lobbying for men to be let into women's spaces claim it's for the safety of delicate transwomen, but aren't in fact interested in separate spaces.

We saw this play out perfectly with Lia Thomas. The extra, additional category was created, and lo and behold, nobody raced in it.

What activists are demanding is the acquiescence and support and indulgence of women; it's not about the spaces.

Exactly.

Helpuschoose · 18/06/2024 11:07

His comments aren’t getting much traction online amongst all the other noise which is deemed so much more important. But The Times have at least referenced it in their rolling coverage.

I seem to remember (happy to be told I'm wrong) that when single sex wards have been discussed, it's emerged that some hospitals describe an arrangement as separate when in reality there's just one room with screens around one bit of it & loos, showers, etc are mixed. So talk of separate wards or separate rooms or single sex facilities may not mean one room for women only plus single sex facilities. That's not good enough.

theilltemperedclavecinist · 18/06/2024 11:04

Datun · 18/06/2024 10:56

And neither do I think a mixed sex hospital ward is the answer either.

Hospitals should be based on biology.

For the time being he does have the option of making special provision for men with GRCs because its a minuscule number. That's only a short-term fix though, if numbers go up.

We all know what they're really about, but we could pretend to treat them as 'men with a phobia of other men'.

DrNickedMaCorpus · 18/06/2024 11:01

I'm not even sure that the extra spaces would have to be provided, ultimately. Just offered.

It instantly punctures the whole bullshit narrative and collapses it.

DrNickedMaCorpus · 18/06/2024 11:00

Helpuschoose · 18/06/2024 10:54

This is why I thought it might provide a small sliver of hope. It doesn’t change the position on the ground, as it were, where there is much ignorance or cowardice on the part of institutions as to what the law actually allows them to do to protect single sex spaces. All those battles have to be won individually, which is exhausting but almost inevitable. However, I thought it was a position from KS which is ever so slightly more supportive of the legal reality that single-sex spaces are biological-sex based in law. The practicality of monitoring that is, sadly, still in the hands of those women fighting daily battles, but at least it’s better than KS saying a GRC qualifies you to be in a single-sex space. Small, even tiny, wins! Anneliese Dodds on the other hand seems to have a different agenda, which I’m at a loss to fathom the reasoning behind.

Agree.

Kier changes his position daily depending who he is speaking too. Many of his front benchers are much more consistent in their TWAW proclamations.

Has Kier condemned the abuse of Rosie Duffield yet?

Don't think he has, no.

Gettingmadderallthetime · 18/06/2024 10:14

@Chersfrozenface @OldCrone @AstonUniversityDataScrapingDepartment @TWETMIRF thanks for clarification. Sorry I got that wrong. (Will try harder).

@ResisterRex Venturing an answer to your question re source of info on NHS 'So if Starmer truly believes that this isn't happening then why? Who's telling him this? And who's telling him that staff aren't identifying as women, as that didn't feature in his reply either?' I understand his wife works in the NHS.

Good point about where he might be getting this information

I'll be accused of being naive, but I'm heartened by this. Yes, it only scratched the surface. But time was limited and implementation will be a complex matter. KS is saying quite clearly that men with GRCs will not be forced to bunk in with the other men, but won't be in with the women either. This is a big shift for Labour and TRAs will be furious (it will be good if gc msm showcase their response because it will highlight how mad they are).

I agree. It's heading in the right direction.

I just don't think he's got hold of the rudder.

If you're going to make special, extra provision for people who say they are trans, you have to be prepared to supply it.

People generally think of that in terms of a mixed sex space, that people can opt into if they want to, whilst preserving single sex spaces.

But a private hospital room isn't that. Which just tells me he hasn't thought about it.

Helpuschoose · 18/06/2024 10:54

theilltemperedclavecinist · 18/06/2024 10:46

@lcakethereforeIam

Institutions are failing on necessary/useful sex segregation because they fear social or legal consequences. Having the government say it's OK is the essential first step.

Captured institutions will be more vulnerable to subversion from within, and under more competitive pressure from alternative sex realist offerings. I won't go to M&S if Next has trans exclusive changing rooms.

This is why I thought it might provide a small sliver of hope. It doesn’t change the position on the ground, as it were, where there is much ignorance or cowardice on the part of institutions as to what the law actually allows them to do to protect single sex spaces. Should ask him if he's going to make it clear to girl guides that their current position isn't actually legal and they need to refuse admittance to transgirls and transwomen

theilltemperedclavecinist · 18/06/2024 10:51

Datun · 18/06/2024 10:48

Exactly. There needs to be a penalty for advertising something as a single sex, when it isn't.

Maybe turn it around and require providers to specify whether things are trans-inclusive?
