Why are ITV lying about transmen in prisons?

Just watched the latest episode of Emmerdale. Matty, the transman character, has been in court charged with a stabbing, and at the end is shown being transported to a men's prison surrounded by jeering men who will clearly be preying on them at the earliest opportunity.

But why has this been written into the plot? It simply isn't true that transmen are housed in male prisons - precisely because it isn't safe for them! Even the most basic research would have told the scriptwriters that this doesn't happen so what are they playing at? Looks like the latest attempt by soap writers to paint trans people as eternal victims. I seem to recall Hollyoaks had a transwoman in a female prison being beaten up by the "nasty" women - something that has never ever actually happened! Though the reverse has happened plenty of times and has been studiously ignored Angry

If it's relevant, a trans-teen girl used a male bathroom. She received a homophobic slur and was punched in the jaw causing her teeth to "explode".

We are all still waiting for JK Rowling to post about this horrific hateful violent attack.

A man assaulted another man in Minnesota and you are waiting for JKR to comment?

Erm.... why?

It's funny how women have the power to make men assault transwomen but at the same time not have the power to stop them assaulting women. It's almost like it's not actually women that make violent men violent and it's just convenient to blame us.

It's no. 1 in the Rules of Misogyny - Women are responsible for what men do.

A disgusting attack. Whilst it is male on male violence I don’t feel that description alone considers the specific vulnerability of trans-identified males and females to transphobic and/or homophobic attacks. Most of us support the addition of gender neutral single user toilets to keep trans-identified people safe. It is only that their safety should not come at the expense of the safety and dignity of women and girls. I also don’t see why JK Rowling is to blame for this? She has always made clear her opposition to discrimination and violence against trans-identified people.

Peskysquirrel · 13/06/2024 14:35

@Christinapple All you've done by posting that link is highlight male on male violence in toilets. Was that your intention?

Why should JKR post about it? Why aren't you asking a prominent male person to comment on male violence in men's toilets?
Why aren't you calling out to all males to accept gender non-conforming males in their toilets however they identify?

We are all still waiting for JK Rowling to post about this horrific hateful violent attack.

Why?

This is an everyday story of male violence. I’m sorry for the boy who was attacked, but male-on-male violence is sadly common. One of the many reasons we don’t want men in women’s spaces.

The first thing to note is that the numbers are tiny. According to this Telegraph piece on official data, there are 225 male-born transgender prisoners and 43 female-born transgender prisoners. These figures don't include prisoners with a GRC - apparently there are 13 of those in total.

The Telegraph story doesn't say where the female-born (ie trans men) prisoners are housed. But I don't think the Emmerdale writers have thought this through. Surely the central plank of transgender philosophy is that you are who you say you are? That if you are born female, and identify as a trans man, then you are a trans man and should be treated in every respect the same as those born male. If the character is a trans man, then surely they would be delighted to have their gender identity validated by being sent to a men's prison.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/02/28/prisons-now-housing-record-number-of-transgender-inmates/

Alison, remember that only a small minority of transpeople ever bother to get a GRC. So the vast majority could pop back into their birth gender any time they like.

TWETMIRF · 13/06/2024 13:56

Male on male violence is a problem, that doesn't mean that all the males who are at risk should be in the ladies toilets. It's horrible that this person was attacked but that isn't the fault of women.

Well you were rude, so you tell us?

That was not my intention, I'm sorry if that's how it was interpreted.

WifeOfTiresias · 13/06/2024 12:55

Latest news on Matty in the clink from last night's episode is reported phone conversation where they were staying in their cell and refusing to use the showers - now why could that be???

Interesting to see where this goes next.

Quite right too. Transmen are men after all. This is what equality looks like. Unless...

Exactly this ….

Carebearsonmybed · 13/06/2024 12:07

It's indoctrination.

Maybe because it's a fictional soap and not a factual documentary?

Emmerdale scriptwriters: Look at our new crusading storyline about how poor trans Matty is thrown to the mercy of a baying mob in a male prison! Trans people are the most oppressed ever!

Sensible people on MN: << check facts >>. Actually, in England transmen are by default sent to female prisons and are only transferred to the male estate at their own request and even then only after an extensive risk assessment process.

Emmerdale scriptwriters: ohhhh right....... yes, but it's not real you know!

Chersfrozenface · 13/06/2024 09:58

It's "popular entertainment" pushing propaganda for gender ideology.

Only it's all gone a bit wrong for the propagandists.

No shit! And there's me and everyone else on this board thinking it was real life.

Thank goodness you turned up to put us right.

I think what their storyline is actually demonstrating is that no matter how you might want to present yourself, when the chips are down biological sex really does matter. Which is not the message I think they are wanting to put across.

Exactly this!

dad11122 · 13/06/2024 09:55

Datun · 13/06/2024 09:51

Yes they're wrong, and presumably they're trying to make everyone feel sorry for the transman.

In reality they're yelling from the tree tops that transmen are women and therefore transwomen are men. And that it is the male sex who represent the danger.

I doubt it's deliberate, it's probably confused.

Or rather not in the least bit confused!

MinnieCauldwell · 13/06/2024 09:48

All the way through this trans/Matty storyline Matty, previously Hannah, has been treated as male, Matty became a son to Moira, a husband to Kerry and described as a 'top bloke' and a 'hot guy'. Now Matty is clearly being viewed as female by Mum Moira and wife Kerry.
So transphonic! I think the script writers have got themselves into a bit of a pickle now.

My son requested we helped him to pick government implants out of his skin with a bread knife. Fortunately schizophrenia is recognised as a mental illness and is treated. If he had been asking to mutilate his genitalia then they’d have been encouraging him. Unwell people often commit self harm, whether as a coping mechanism or because they cannot recognise it. It is the responsibility of those caring for them to make compassionate decisions in their best interests. So the fact that the prisoner requested it doesn’t wash with me or make the prison service any less negligent in my eyes.

Well, quite.

However, with regard to the Emmerdale storyline, it is nonsense. A transman would not have been sent straight to a men"s prison in England, but to the women's estate.
