“I think the Labour Party… needs to be a broad church - from what I can see that’s happening, that’s becoming more difficult”

Faiza Shaheen, who was set to stand for Labour, says her candidacy was pulled over liking a series of Tweets which she claims Labour said would frustrate its campaign

Interview on newsnight shorty after learning she has been deselected.https://x.com/BBCNewsnight/status/1795942561258889318

It seems someone has been going through candidates tweet accounts going back years, even before they were officially part of Labour.

If these tweets were so awful how come they were ever chosen as candidates in the first place.

She had spend the afternoon canvassing with the support of the local party. https://www.faizashaheen.co.uk/

Whilst I think this is a massive shame it’s a bit 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. Labour can’t win here and will end up pleasing no one, except the very centre ground which is what they’re going for. They are simply preempting what was bound to happen anyway once the RW press started their trawling tweets. They would have had another Azhar Ali scenario on their hands which would have become a massive distraction. I think people need to remember that they are running to be the central government, not the opposition or some fringe party that shouts from the sidelines.

I don’t personally think someone should be deselected for liking tweets from years ago. However her recent comments about a vote for Palestine were incredibly unwise. I completely agree that whatever people’s personal view points on Israel/Gaza the focus in the U.K. in areas with large Muslim and Jewish populations definitely needs to be on decreasing tensions and not inflaming them.

@StandingMyGround888 no. That's true. Sorry. I felt it was relevant to the discussion, though because of the ruthless nature of the Party purges.

The ruthlessness applies to all the parties, and the divisive and oppositional type of politics we have in this country is very bad for everybody.

StandingMyGround888 · 31/05/2024 03:21

She's not black... for a start?

inkymoose · 31/05/2024 03:04

We are living in very strange times. The labour party has history of expunging people it didn't approve of. It's about political expediency and not about democracy. Starmer, Tory lite, Blair prototype/clone/facsimile no. 2, who can't define what a woman is and isn't interested, wants to get into power. In order to get into power one has to be Machiavellian. Destroy your enemy.

Using propaganda as a weapon to destroy your enemy is also an old trick. But when all else fails, just have them killed. Metaphorically speaking. For now.

Democracy and the Labour Party – the case of Stroud

The stitch-up seems to be replacing democracy as the Labour Party’s prefered way of working. In Wakefield not long ago…

Just in general, not just politics, I don't like this practice for employers policing the SM use of their employees when it isn't affecting their ability to do their jobs, and also of prospective employers trawling though the same before interview. And yes, I know being an MP isn't being an employee, but I see the parallels. How many of us couldn't look back at old Facebook posts and find something, shall we say, unwise?

Why is support for Palestine divisive @IdaPrentice ? Many Jewish people, including Israelis, support a state for Palestinians. World leaders have voiced support for Palestinians, even Zionists like Biden.

Yet Labour candidates are not allowed to . Who or what are they allowed to support then ? David Hare wrote a TV play called Abscence of War about this very problem. The fictional Labour leader - played brilliantly by John Thaw - explodes with exasperation because he is ' only allowed to talk about bloody hospitals!'

The weird thing is there is a broader range of opinions in the Conservative Party. David Cameron said Israel will never have peace while settlers are killing people in the West Bank for example. You could be deselected for that in Starmers party. You certainly wouldn't remain in the cabinet. Where are the screeching headlines calling him a toxic antisemite? When does Big Dave's re-education course begin. I don't recall his letter of apology. We'll just have to live with the mystery.

She wasn't just expressing support for Palestine. She was expressing it while denegrating her opponent for being 'pro-Israel'. That's divisive.

According to that article in Jewish News, it's about her own tweets, not accidentally liking something from years ago. She tweeted that a vote for her was a vote for Palestine. And as a thoughtful person quoted said, in that constituency Muslim and Jewish people used to be on good terms, so now is not a good time to put out such a divisive and tribal message.

Also - the comparisons with Rosie Duffield are ridiculous. She said biological sex is real, which is very much NOT the same thing as being racist as any idiot can tell.

A bit like the thread about Diane Abbot everyone reverts to making personal comments about a woman they have probably never heard of, and ramping up the rhetoric about anti semitism.

Just a reminder that many people who are Jewish and members of the Labour Party do no support this hijacking of the issue of anti semitism by the pro Zionist wing of the Labour Party.

Just as those acting as though they are part of the Salem Witch Hunt jury are fanatically abusing Diane Abbott for antisemitism, when only last night a resident of her borough who is a Rabbi was able to speak about her without venom about what has happened over the past year and wanted her to remain an MP.

And Jewish Voice for Labour wrote a statement saying " ... The withdrawal of the whip from Diane Abbott is yet a further attack on our freedom to debate very important issues in the Labour party. Her original letter was not antisemitic and the way some critics have rounded on her as if it were is cynical and unhelpful. ... " And yet some on here presume they have the right analysis.

And just for clarification using the word Black within a political context is quite common, just as Southall Black Sisters uses the word Black.

No doubt all of you would have no qualm if a new manager moved into your work place and so as to dish about nice jobs to their cronies starting trying to dig up dirt on people to get rid of them.

The point is Faiza Shaheen was selected as the official candidate in the last election, and did surprisingly well against a Tory "big beast". And has gone through the selection process with her local party and become their official candidate.

And then suddenly a tweet from however many years ago becomes this big issue just now, in time to dump her and like DA not give her enough time to consider standing as an independent. And yet wasn't important enough on two other occassions.

It makes the Labour Party look either totally corrupt or hopelessly incompetent.

Or even more grotesquely is cynically whipping up hysteria about anti semitism, because of the very real and serious situation in Gaza, for their own cheap political power grab.

But as a PP said, maybe there is a silver lining to this, ie that Labour will lose more votes than they could have got if they had behaved with integrity and transparency.

And no I am not a Tory, but someone like many others who is disgusted by the unscrupulous, underhand morals of Westminster.

How many of you, if it was announced that Rosie Duffield had been deselected, because of some email from years ago would say oh that's fair.

Would you all be applauding Starmer for being decisive and a good leader?

For your information: I am Jewish and I am relieved to see Keir Starmer taking a stand on antisemitism, which those tweets very much were. This is not "whipping up hysteria" and for you to say so is somewhat offensive. And most Jewish people view Jewish Voice for Labour as an absolute joke.

So many other things are wrong and offensive in your post but I can't be bothered with a line by line critique. I'll just leave you with this - please don't presume to speak for Jewish people and to decide what is and is not antisemitism.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 30/05/2024 19:30

The antisemitic tweet they read out on Newsnight was from last week.

Just as Suella Braverman did.

Really funny how women are able to talk really disparagingly about the Labour Party and it being captured when it is about GC women being piled on by them, but suddently think they are pure as pure on other issues.

I am really not sure what your point is here but I think that the anti-semitism is absolutely real and alive and kicking in the Labour party. It's not 'hysteria' to point this out. I am glad that Starmer is weeding these people out. Good fucking riddance.

What do you mean by the ‘pro-Zionist wing of the Labour Party’ @IwantToRetire

MrTiddlesTheCat · 30/05/2024 18:47

It was antisemitic. She admitted she knew it was antisemitic. She just disagrees that she should be held to account for it.

"a person's immutable characteristics has NO RELEVANCE to their political stance." @CantDealwithChristmas

This. It would nice if we could see a more general move away from identity politics from the Labour Party, which seems to have backfired, particularly over Gaza.

Yes.

There is a reason the LP is into gender ideology, and prone to antisemitism.

It's because those are where identity politics gets you.

Certain types on the left really hate any black Tory MPs for the same reason. They are called all sorts of unmentionable names because they are SUPPOSED to be left wing. It's appalling.

CantDealwithChristmas · 30/05/2024 09:28

She's not Black, she's Brown. Half Pakistani, half Fijian. I wish I didn't have to point that out because frankly a person's immutable characteristics has NO RELEVANCE to their political stance. We non-white-British people are fed up of having our politics taken for granted, especially by the left wing. We're not puppets, nor an insensible voting bloc. We can do critical thinking too, who'da thunk it?

Shaheen does however have form for antisemitism and seems to think she's standing to represent Gaza rather than a constituency in the UK. utter crank, needs to go.

I'm starting to feel a grudging respect for Starmer. All I need now is for him to admit that he knows what a woman is, then he'll get my vote.

Absolutely. It's offensive in the extreme to assume all brown or black people no matter their background are some kind of hive mind. It's infantalising and imperialistic. As if poor brown people are too stupid to make decisions about themselves. They are too stupid to know who to vote for.

I heard Owen Jones having a rant on LBC and claiming that Starmer was attacking women of colour. Bonkers.

Anti semitism needs to be removed from the labour party.
Plus considering the appalling things tory mps have done and still be kept in their jobs I would prefer KS taking this approach.
I don’t believe her sex or the colour of her skin is the issue at all.
FS does not represent all women of colour any more than I represent all disabled women. People can and should be judged on their actions.
