The agreement in Northern Ireland was met by both sides, with regard to unification. They agreed that it could be decided by 50% plus one vote.

The Brexit referendum should have been held again, as an official, binding vote, but it's water under the bridge now.

Sane countries specify supermajorities for referenda, not 50% + 1

Also, what many people fail to realise that the Brexit Referendum was a non-binding one, but the Tories decided to act on it, anyway.

Legally speaking, you're entirely correct but that doesn't escape the very point of the referendum which was a vote on that the UK as a whole wanted. Politically speaking, ignoring it would have been dangerous in the long run. Ultimately your objection has no force anyway because Parliament acted and Parliament is the expression of democracy in the UK.

In 1979 51% of people living in Scotland voted for their own parliament but they were denied it because the empowering Act required 40% of all those eligible to vote to vote in favour. That rankled for two decades in Scotland. Were the Scots just moaning?

I expect in the next decade there will be a border poll in Northern Ireland. If its residents vote by 50.0000001 to unite with the Republic will you say that's illegitimate?

I expect there will be another indyref in Scotland. What about that? Should there be a supermajority?

Back to LRM: I think it's a sad day when party apparatchiks can have such influence. His career as an MP is ended, at least for a parliamentary term and even he does not know what's alleged against him.

lcakethereforeIam · 31/05/2024 12:29

Eh! Brexit has been and done, I believe there were a lot of threads about it at the time. I actually don't have a problem with LRM campaigning at the time for a second vote, that seems a reasonable and democratic way to get a rethink. If he was also slurring leave voters as thick, racist, gammons, then that would be a bit much from an MP.

Although, TBF, after the Tories decided to act on it anyway they got voted into government.

Sorry, but it's not democracy for me. Referendums aren't democratic because governments only call them if they think they're going to get the answer they want. of course, sometimes, they get it wrong. Brexit was a massive self-inflicted wound to the UK economy.

Pity KS couldn't have shown some mettle beforehand over LRM's behaviour towards Miriam Cates and Rosie Duffield.

Yes, I agree.

Someone upthread said there was an issue with this person saying something which could be considered antisemitic. I expect that Keir Starmer is doing an antisemitism house clean. Should he get elected, he will have to make statements on Israel / Palestine.

He isn’t very interested (really) in misogyny.

EasternStandard · 31/05/2024 07:11

I can’t imagine Rayner going. Starmer is hardly going for strong ones with Abbott and co

Easy pickings and hiding somewhere over it all

Floisme · 31/05/2024 07:08

I'm pretty sure the deputy party leader is an elected position so Starmer can't do much about Angela Rayner. If I remember correctly, he once tried to move her from her shadow cabinet post and she jrefused to go!

SinnerBoy · 31/05/2024 02:51

I see that Angela Rayner has taken Sir Cowardy Custard to task for trying to get rid of Diane Abbot and Fazia Shaheen. I wonder if Angela has much future now?

BlessedKali · 30/05/2024 22:57

Anyone who so vehemently encourages the breakdown of safeguarding, and puts on such an obvious dramatic show (a lie) in doing so, I believe, has nefarious ulterior motives. And when it comes to the breaking down of safeguarding around children, it is a red flag.

I do wonder what the complaint from 8 years ago is regarding. I have my suspicions.

GailBlancheViola · 30/05/2024 22:39

CruCru · 30/05/2024 18:19

I don't know what the allegation is. I suspect that Keir Starmer is having a tidy up of people who are likely to cause him problems - which this guy is.

Pity KS couldn't have shown some mettle beforehand over LRM's behaviour towards Miriam Cates and Rosie Duffield.

I see various of LRM's achievements have been noted. Let's add that he's God's Gift as a representative to every obnoxious male school bully still nursing a grievance over his schooldays because the girls in his class were able to retreat to the girls' toilets to escape his harassment.

Every time I see someone say that mixed-sex unisex toilets would be okay for women in a workplace where no strangers were present, I think of LRM's pattern of intimidating behaviour towards female co-workers across both parties.

In fact his grotesque behaviour towards Miriam Cates - was in fact directly after she had been discussing men in female toilets, and how she’d been scared / intimidated.
