I've been sat here since the announcement trying to figure out who the actual fuck to vote for.

Tories are corrupt and care about nothing more than lining each other's pockets. But because they think it's a vote-winner, they will push through the Cass Review recommendations and protect single-sex spaces.

Labour - my political home...except for the gender woo. I think Keir Starmer is a fiercely intelligent and principled man and I'd be proud to be represented by him on the international stage. But he's trying too hard to please everyone, and I think self ID will be brought in under his leadership. Women's identity will be lost and I fear we'll never regain the rights and protection that we'll lose.

Lib Dems and Greens, completely lost to gender ideology. Not even a consideration.

So, absolutely abhor everything the Tories stand for but can't support Labour because of gender crap. What to do???

I moved to a new area last year. Just checked the voting history for my new town....it's been a safe Tory seat since 1997.

I will vote because I'm passionate about the election and voting. But my vote is absolutely meaningless when you look at these figures. I don't know why I've been wringing my hands over who to vote for when my vote will have precisely no impact whatsoever on anyone. Unless I choose to boost the Tory figures, of course.

Im already weary thinking about the amount of drive by scolding’s we’re going to have

Meh! People can scold us as much as they like. I'm old enough and ugly enough to know my own mind. And no amount of but but but from certain posters is ever going to make me vote Labour THIS TIME! God, this may even be the year I don't Renew my Labour membership!

Now I've just got to look at my local candidates and work out who the hell I vote for!!

Lordy, I'm finding it very weird how MN reads like a single issue site over anything political. I'm fiercely gender critical but I cannot understand for the life of me why any informed woman thinks that is more important that the absolute state of our country in terms of leadership around the economy, the environment, and the lack of social contract that we are seeing all around us.

I cannot wait for a new government and hopefully the UK looking less like absolute imbeciles on the world stage.

I do think other things are important, but women's rights are a line in the sand for me. I cannot and will not vote for a party that won't recognise and protect women's sex-based rights.

My concern @Boiledbeetle is that Kier is just a puppet for getting in, and that he will be replaced by a hardliner in the first 12 months.

I'd quite like him to be replaced by a competent Labour politician like Burnham. But it's more likely to be some nu Lab clone like Creasy. Looks like he will win big though so he'll be safe for a few years.
Will KJK run against him in his seat ? It would increase the profile of GC views if nothing else.

IwantToRetire · 22/05/2024 19:21

Heaven knows why we need a change. Great campaign slogan. 14 more years please.

But it wont be a change will it.

After all it isn't what the anarchists like to say "whoever you vote for the Government gets in" it is more like "the public gets the politicians it deserves".

If most people are just voting for a change, irrespective of what it is, is just silly.

Everyone, not just the media, but people seem to think this is just some tv be celebrity show.

Yeah! I feel like Keir is being used as a non threatening friendly face! But as he's so fucking wet he would be easy to oust as leader if Labour were in power. And we know there are elements within Labour who are more akin to rabid dogs than decent human beings who won't ever be happy with Keir as their leader.

Edited

I also worry that in the last 7 years the Tories changing party leader so often has got the public used to the idea and so Labour getting rid of Sir Quiche Starmer after using him to secure an election win wouldn’t attract the criticism and opprobrium it might once have.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/05/2024 19:16

Things change. Laws that were brought in years ago may no longer be fit for purpose or can be used in a way that wasn't foreseen.

Eg. Thatcher closed the mines:1980s this was bad...in the light of climate change, not so much.

North Sea Oil: new licences bad due to climate/good for energy security/better than importing oil/gas from elsewhere where emissions are worse plus transport emissions etc... can be viewed many ways

We need to look at where we are now and what needs changing now, and the recent record...plus manifestoes and what they say and more importantly what they are not saying

I was hoping that it would be a bit longer.

I thought they would wait to the autumn, but in fact I think they have given in to the media, who just derail any issue into making it about when will they call an election.

And most people (though heavens know why) seem to think "we need a change".

I don't get to vote in the general election, but I do have to live with whoever you elect. No pressure.

I think there's zero chance of Starmer being ousted if he wins a decent overall majority. I can only see it strengthening his position.

If, after all the predictions, he fails to win an overall majority and has to go cap in hand to the Lib Dems, SNP etc then yup, he's toast. It doesn't seem likely as things stand though.

(2) Remind me again who brought in the Gender Recognition Act, making men legally women.

Back soon to finish what they started

Thrilling

I wonder how the ( remaining ) SNP feel about this general election? :)
I'm sure they will do just dandy :)

Oh my first time I’ve seen that

IwantToRetire · 22/05/2024 18:52

(1) I'm not a single-issue voter. The Tories have caused the womens rights shitshow we currently have, as well as destroying the economy and asset-stripping the country. Get rid of them.

(2) Remind me again who brought in the Gender Recognition Act, making men legally women.

This is the other dread of a GE, having the same misleading statements (1) which cant be left to go unresponded to (2) so cant even expect to have a decent discussion on FWR.

What we need is some politics geek to run us up a quick list of which bills were passed when, and who was the party in power at the time.

And no statement like (1) can be made without using the compiled list to show it is a correct statement.

Momentums email: " we can either wake up in July to five more years of the Tories or a Labour Government we can pressure for better".

That isn't exactly Labour are wonderful is it!

I think I want to go back to bed. Can someone wake me around Christmas?
