What is your definition of TRA?

Just curious, I am have always read this as someone who is an activist for trans right, but I feel like it is sometimes used on here for anyone who isn't fully GC. What do you mean when you say it?

On mumsnet, if you're not gender critical then you're a TRA. There is no in between.

I'm not sure that is true. Many, even most, people have no idea about gender ideology.......it is only those who actively seek to promote or enforce it; via closing down discussion; by policing pronoun use etc; by using words like 'transphobe', that I would classify as a TRA. That would include my own MP and quite a number of others....though certainly not all MPs.

A TRA teacher is someone who goes out of their way to teach gender ideology/theory, as fact, in school. A public TRA mouthpiece/ally might be Billy Bragg, Owen Jones, Ash Sarkar, Lorraine Kelly...anyone who makes a point of embracing trans ideology and negating/denying its detrimental impacts.

Not really. As in, I don’t believe this is a correct representation.

However, if you are activating to have gender priorititised above sex instead of activating to find an equitable solution, or you are on MN scolding feminists for campaigning for the rights of female people to not have their protections and opportunities now include any male person or just scolding feminists in general, then it just might be that you are an extreme TRA or you are mimicking their tactics and terms and coming across as an extreme TRA.

i would recommend to someone that if someone calls you a TRA, maybe ask why instead of reacting by being offended. It might be that you have inadvertently acted like one.

A post 2 posts above you says

anyone who believes in gender identity

That supports @Bringbackthebeaver@Bringbackthebeaver post.

No, quite the contrary. There is a common theme in all of these responses. Can you spot it?

I can see the common theme but some people mean actual activists and others mean anyone who believes TWAW. Can you see the difference?

This.
Or in some cases even if you are GC but not GC enough.

A TRA to me is someone who believes TWAW and actively campaigns for them to be treated that way.

I use it for anyone who is outspoken on gender ideology; seeking to promote it or enforce it - and who dismisses or negates its impact on women and children.

Anyone who has 'pronouns in bio', repeats mantras such as TWAW etc.

changeison · 22/05/2024 13:30

anyone who believes in gender identity
anyone who believes TWAW and TMAM
anyone who puts pronouns in bio
anyone who thinks children can be trans
anyone who supports stonewall or mermaids

ArabellaScott · 22/05/2024 13:24

Someone who advocates for Gender Identity to be prioritised over Biological Sex socially, legally and/or linguistically.

That. And hasn't got anything to do with being trans, by the way. It's more about people who want to use the idea of 'trans' as a tool to gain power, and/or manipulate people, threaten people, coerce people. I can think of many of the worst 'trans rights activists' and none of them are trans.

Men in balaclavas screaming and spitting and attacking women who dare to gather in public - 'antifa' trans activists. Men on Twitter threatening/disapproving of women who dare to speak out in the public square - beardy bloke trans rights activists. Politicians who use accusations of 'transphobia' as a means to oppress and suppress and censure women - see LGBTQIA wings of Labour/SNP/Rainbow Greens etc.

But yeah Trans Rights Activists! They aren't the people who sleepwalked into be kind they are the "but they just want to pee" brigade and the ones screaming "fuck you" to women attending a conference.

This.

My best friend says trans women are women and thinks it's very unkind to say that they are male.

But she isn't a trans activist.

A trans activist is someone who openly believes that the "rights" of birth registered males to use women's spaces and compete in women's sports trump the rights of birth registered females to have single sex spaces and sports, and who actively opposes legal or medical gatekeeping in relation to gender recognition or "gender affirming healthcare".

I call them "trans activists" rather than "trans rights activists" because none of the things they are demanding for trans people are actually rights. They cannot name a single thing which is actually a right, and which trans people do not already have in the country where they live.

TheClogLady · 22/05/2024 11:54

Not everyone who has undergone gender reassignment is a TRA, not every TRA has undergone, nor intends to undergo reassignment.

OpusGiemuJavlo · 22/05/2024 10:24

Someone who wants the special caste of trans people to have additional rights over and above the rights that everyone has. Eg the right to control other people's thoughts, opinions, beliefs and speech. The right to have reality bend to their will. The right to access resources and opportunities that are designated for a group of people they aren't a member of.

AlisonDonut · 22/05/2024 10:19

An MRA with 'weird' hair &/or a black bandanna or gimp mask or balaclava.

Peskysquirrel · 22/05/2024 09:56

Soontobe60 · 22/05/2024 06:26

Well, seeing as someone who identifies as trans has exactly the same rights as someone who doesn’t, based on their sex, then anyone who wants more rights is a TRA, regardless as to how they ask for this.
Someone who believes TWAW, would want all TW to be treated exactly like women, same spaces, same job opportunities, same hospital wards etc. they might not attend demonstrations and hold placards. But they actively want TW to be treated as women.
A GP who posts pictures of themselves wearing a rainbow lanyard to ‘make their patients feel safe’ is a TRA. A politician who stands up in the House of Commons and states TWAW is a TRA. A parent with a male child who claims to have been born in the wrong body, and said parent posts on social media about their ‘daughter’ is a TRA.

LilyBartsHatShop · 22/05/2024 05:54

I also have always taken it to be a play on MRA. So the difference between someone who is an activist trying to improve access to support services for men at risk of suicide and an MRA is seething misogyny. Likewise, the difference between an activist who is raising awareness of workplace or housing discrimination suffered by trans people and a TRA is seething misogyny.

lonelywater · 22/05/2024 00:17

Talking specifically about the full fat, full on TRA's (the himdia and Fred types). In a kinder, more magnanimous age they would be invited (with no opt out exception) to spend all their time in a room with very thick wallpaper and 27/ 7 supervision. These people are complete tin foil hat nutters who believe total fucking nonsense and should not be left in charge of machinery or rape crisis centres .

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/05/2024 23:57

An MRA v2.0, usually.

I'm of the belief that TRA is the equivalent of MRA, as it is very rare for the "rights" of trans identified women to be trumpeted and demanded. The "rights" we hear so much about are those of trans identified men, pushing their aggressive selves into women only spaces.

Boiledbeetle · 21/05/2024 19:34

I don't have a problem with anyone advocating for trans rights, trans people deserve not to be treated badly, but there currently seems to be nothing between the trans people who just want to get on quietly with their life and try their hardest not to infringe on other people's rights but in doing so keep their head down and don't say anything about what is being said in their name, and the current hoarde of megaphone screaming banshees.

I'd quite like some moderate TRAs with sensible solutions to the obvious clash of rights that the current loudest TRAs are stating never happen.

I'd also like some TRAs to actually back up some of what they say with verifiable respectable sources and decent data.

A beetle can dream I suppose.

Fukuraptor · 21/05/2024 19:11

TRA has a similar meaning to MRA

It's not so much that they are "Rights Activists" so much as Male Supremacy Advocates.

Helleofabore · 21/05/2024 18:19

I think that it is acceptable for people who are trans to activate for protections that have no negative impact on female people’s rights and female people.

I think of it as extreme trans activists who push for rights that prioritise gender over sex and cause negative impacts to female people in any way. It helps me sort it out in my head.

Signalbox · 21/05/2024 17:53

TRAs would include anyone who actively pushes for policies or laws that advantage trans people whilst simultaneously disadvantaging women and girls (anyone who campaigns for GRA reform for example)

Also TRA would apply to anyone who shames women for their sex realist position or is involved in no-platforming women or trying to get women sacked when attempting to talk about their rights.

I wouldn't class a person who disagrees with me but does none of the above as a TRA.
