'As in previous years, the prison population has remained as majority male, white, in their 30s, heterosexual and following the Christian faith. There was a 17% increase in the transgender prison population this year, with 268 transgender prisoners recorded in March 2023. Similar to last year’s figures, most transgender prisoners were legally male, white and held in the men’s prison estate.
There was a drop in mother and baby unit applications this year compared to last year. However, keeping to the trend of previous years, more than half of applications were approved. This report shows new data on the protected characteristics of pregnant prisoners (found in Chapter 3).'

Why are men still in women's prisons?

duc748 · 10/05/2024 18:09

If a woman has had penis construction surgery then she can have sex/rape

Can they? Do these artificial penises work 'properly'? Do they achieve an erection?

I'm not sure I even want to know the answers to these questions! 😀

I’ve never worked in a women’s prison but I know that women are less likely to be convicted than a man is.

This is why I would never work in a women’s prison because most of them are extremely volatile/dangerous/mentally ill.

I can confirm that in men’s prison there has been a massive increase in people identifying as transgender.

There are of course a lot of MH issues and neurodivergence, which does account for some of them just following the crowd but most of them are narcissistic and love the attention and/or are very sick individuals that get a kick out of being ‘a woman’.

There is tension in prisons because the transgender men tend to get more special treatment (single cells, extra care packages, extra underwear etc).

There have always been men who play the female role in prisons and become inmates ‘girlfriends’ this is nothing new and it’s common for them to act and dress feminine but it has become worse because now it is a protected characteristic and they can claim the officers are giving them unfair treatment because they’re transgender, so they get away with a lot more and get more special treatment compared to the other men.

One man wrote to the governor to complain that he can only wear women’s lacy lingerie because that’s the only thing he feels comfortable in!!!

I don’t know what the solution is though.

I would like to say whatever sex you are born then that’s the jail you go to but I don’t know if it’s that straight forward.

If a woman has had penis construction surgery then she can have sex/rape or make other women feel uncomfortable in a woman’s prison.

If a man has had vaginal construction surgery then he can have sex/be raped in a male prison.

But then even if a man has had his penis removed, I still don’t think it’s right to be in a women’s prison because I still don’t think that’s safe.

If the vast majority of transgender prisoners are sexed male, and the vast majority of offending is sexed male, do the usual ploppers think this is:

A) Because transwomen are offending in stereotypically male patterns and transmen aren't offending in male patterns OR

B) There are lots of male offenders pretending to be transgender OR

C) A combination?

A while ago (in the past 5 years) there was a trans group purposefully targetting men in prison - sorry I can't remember more, but it might jog someone's memory?

'There are only 12 women's prisons (out of 117 in total) in England and Wales'

5 plus any males with a grc. That is known about. Article says 13 with a grc, but not which sex they are.

'There were 13 prisoners known to have a Gender Recognition Certificate as of 31st March 2023. These prisoners are not included in the transgender prisoner totals presented in this report.

This is confusing;

Of the 268 transgender prisoners: 48 were in female prisons, 5 self-identified as transgender female, 41 self-identified as transgender male. The remaining 2 self-identified as non-binary, in a different way, or did not provide a response. 220 were in male prisons, 198 self-identified as transgender female, 0 self-identified as transgender male. The remaining 22 self-identified as non-binary, in a different way, or did not provide a response.

So that's 5 males in women's prisons in E&W, by my reading?

Probably 5, but could be 7 (the 2 non binary, other, or no response).

[Edit: hang on, if there are 225 actual men, 220 trans prisoners in the male estate, and 0 actual women in the male estate - then yes, 5 men in women's prisons.]

It does seem unnecessarily confusing!

Transgender prison population rises by 17%
Transgender prison population rises by 17%
Transgender prison population rises by 17%

Which is of course not counting any males with a GRC, who will not show up in figures.

This is likely to be an under estimate:

'For the purposes of this report, transgender prisoners are defined as those individuals known within prison to be currently living in, or presenting in, a gender different to their legal gender [footnote 5] and who have had a local case board (as defined by ‘The Care and Management of Individuals who are Transgender’ policy framework [footnote 6]) and are known to the diversity and inclusion lead within the individual prison where they are housed.

Prisoners who have a full Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) are excluded from any analysis within this report.

The figures reported in this bulletin give an estimate of the number of transgender prisoners and are likely to underestimate the true number. This is because some transgender prisoners, both with and without GRCs, may not have declared that they are transgender or had a local case board.;

I was told that statistically females were more likely to convicted of a crime than males

Probably worth mentioning that rape is only committed by males, but the conviction rate (and of course I get there are reasons for this) is remarkably low. There's probably no crime that women are charged with with has such a low conviction rate. I wonder how much that skews the figures.

Unless of course you are gaslighted into having to say you were raped by a women, which has been reported to have happened when the rapist had his little gender identity crisis!

I'm pleased about the drop in the mother and baby units. Getting anyone born male into a women's prison can only be right if it's down to 0.
A relative worked as a prison officer in a male prison probably a decade ago, and told us that big, butch men would often appear for breakfast wearing lipstick as they knew it would give them special treatment.
When I worked in a public sector organisation I was potentially going to be seconded to a women's prison. I was told that statistically females were more likely to convicted of a crime than males (even though we representa fraction of the prison population), but female identifying males were less likely to be convicted because of their apparent mental health issues surrounding gender identity. Its man on pay day, woman on awards night.
