He's been called dull, thick a little boy and a nepo baby on this thread. I'd call that hate, but if you're ok with that kind of language we'll have to agree to differ.

I'd also say he's probably allowed to have a difference of opinion from JKR even though he's made money from Harry Potter. Its not as if he's said her storytelling is rubbish. I don't understand how you can defend JKR's right to an opinion, but deny his.

Of course you can disagree with him, but do so with a little integrity and present a valid argument and you'll be taken more seriously. Just calling him a child or spitefully saying he can't act doesn't convince me that you have anything to bring to this discussion.

Edited

I'd call describing the son of a casting director, who got his role in Harry Potter because his casting director mum was friends with the casting director on the film a 'nepo baby' an accurate description rather than 'hate'. But you do you

By all means, disagree with him because of his opinion but stop all the shouting about how he should be on someone’s side because he made a bunch of money from their work.

He’s doesn’t have to be on her side, but he should have a bit more respect for her. He certainly doesn’t have to “fawn”, no-one here has said that.

Bu he, Watson and to a certain extent Grint have not had respect for a different opinion - the respect you think we should show Radcliffe - instead they have behaved like Rowling is an embarrassing relative whose dodgy views need to be publicly explained away.

None of them have said anything disrespectful or insulting. They’ve disagreed with her, which they are allowed to do, but they haven’t thrown insults or said anything disrespectful about her or her work.

That’s perfectly acceptable. People can voice their opinion. You’re saying he needs to show her loyalty because he got a job from a book she wrote. He doesn’t. No one needs to stay on side with anyone just because they got a job from them.

It is a ridiculous comment to make and I see it over and over on this site, “How dare he speak out against someone he owes his role as Harry to.” So what?

I disagree with him. I agree with JK Rowling. But her role as Harry Potter creator has absolutely nothing to do with who should be on her side.

In fairness, the quote in bold was made by him immediately after JKR “came out” and released her essay.

His more recent quote admitted that he wouldn’t have his current life if it wasn’t for JKR, but that won’t stop him having his own opinions. And that he loves the LGBT community blah blah blah. Slightly less militant, as I’d expect given Cass.

Would he believe the expertise of Professor Lord Robert Winston I wonder? Because he is very much of the opinion, after a lifetime of working in the field, that women are women, men are men and you can’t change no matter how hard you try and how much you want to.

LOL, have you seen what hundreds of TRAs have called JKR?

I can't repeat any of their multitude of choice insults and death threats, but trust me: nepo baby, thick and little boy are high compliments by comparison.

And whilst you're about it you might wanna check out what the #bekind mob have said about Glinner, Julie Bindel, Kathleen Stock etc etc etc...

Discourse isn’t split into adulation and hate

I;m guessing you aren't on the royal family board. Spirited attempts are made by some posters to claim just that.

theilltemperedclavecinist · 01/05/2024 14:59

I can't find where he doubled down - he literally just said 'no comment'. Also, how is his career fading? He's in pretty constant demand (not that he needs the money!).

I wonder what he will do if it ever sinks in with him what JKR actually meant. He's probably wise just to keep quiet.

viques · 01/05/2024 14:59

You can’t but feel sorry for him, just over thirty no career to speak of and nothing left to do in his life but diss the woman who put more zeros in his bank account that he ever dreamed of. We have got another fifty something years of “Former Harry Potter star Daniel” to endure , nothing for it but to smile and nod, smile and nod .

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.”

Honestly. If you need an expert to tell you who's a woman mate, you're in more trouble than you think.

He hasn't realised that if JKR isn't qualified to comment then by the logic of his statement neither is he. As someone said, if it wasn't for JKR he and the others would be doing DFS voiceovers.

justasking111 · 01/05/2024 14:58

I'd bet the farm that if he were in support of JKR everyone would be gushing about what a wonderful actor he was and how talented he is...

If he came out tomorrow as JKR's biggest fan I'd still pay to never watch him in another thing ever again. Acting isn't for everyone.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 01/05/2024 14:47

How is stating that he's a shit actor hate? He is a shit actor (in my opinion).

Of course he can have an opinion, but when that opinion is factually incorrect (transwomen are women - they aren't) and has the potential to harm women and girls and impact their rights to safe spaces and fairness in sports, then don't be surprised when you get a bit of push back. Things like his privilege DO come into it.

@BiggerBoat1 I don’t deny his right to an opinion, I just think he’s wrong. Given that he’s increasingly on the wrong side of public opinion, together with a career that appears to be fading, I’d have thought he wouldn’t have doubled down but he can do him.

But we’re still allowed to criticise him. And it’s still not “hate”.

OP posts:
SinnerBoy · 01/05/2024 14:39

I see it as derision, rather than hate.

BiggerBoat1 · 01/05/2024 14:36

SidewaysOtter · 01/05/2024 14:24

Oh give over with the accusations of hate.

No-one here is “hating” Radcliffe, they’re criticising what he says and does, his hypocrisy for earning his money from Harry Potter but slating its creator, and for his attitudes towards women.

Discourse isn’t split into adulation and hate Hmm

Can we stop with the nonsense about having to fawn over a creator just because you got work by them?

If JK had come out as a racist, no one would expect the Harry Potter cast to stand by her just because he made money from her creation.

You don’t have to support someone just because you worked because of them. You are not beholden to them for life.

By all means, disagree with him because of his opinion but stop all the shouting about how he should be on someone’s side because he made a bunch of money from their work.

Lots of people made money because of working for Jimmy Saville… should they continue supporting him? It’s the same principle. It doesn’t matter that we are on JK’s side, no one needs to be on someone’s side just because they had a job from that person.

Has she enough expertise for him?

The Cass report didn’t go down the affirmation-only existence-validating route and therefore it’s undoubtedly transphobic. Or something.

I find all the hate a bit sad. He's expressing an opinion, just as JKR does. You may not agree with him, but the personal insults are a bit childish.

It'll be the wrong sort of expertise, it doesn't prioritise men over women so not worth listening to

I have a lot more expertise about this than he does and he's mistaken on all counts - apart from the advice given by US professional healthcare associations which as we now know is all based on circular referencing.

Oh well.

theDudesmummy · 01/05/2024 14:14

I don't hate him. Who could be bothered? I just find his ridiculous and rude behaviour irritating.
