A glance at IMDB suggests he's not getting much return on his brown nosing. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0705356/

Really?

I think the mans opinions on JKR and womens rights make him an eejit, but he's gotten plenty of work according to that imdb page. He's been the lead in a TV show for the last 4 years, and has been in 6 movies during that time as well.

He's also been appearing in a Broadway show for the past couple of years (presumably since his TV show finished filming)

For a guy who has enough cash to never work again, and is known to be picky about what work he does, he seems to be fairly regularly employed.

All he had to say was “I don’t agree with Jo but I know she’s a good person and I utterly condemn the threats and insults that have been thrown at her.”

Yup.

Also he more than anyone was in a good position to say, ‘I know Jo well and she does not hate trans kids.’

One of the most poisonous things that the TRAs have done is to encourage vulnerable young people to believe that Rowling, who many of them admired, hated them. He could have helped to counteract this just by a moment of courage and decency but he didn’t.

I'd bet the farm that if he were in support of JKR everyone would be gushing about what a wonderful actor he was and how talented he is...

Of course they wouldn't (unless the only other acting they'd seen was Hollyoaks or similar) He's dreadful.

Funny how all these men are so certain that TWAW but you never see them dating one do you?

Or paying one to carry their baby Confused

illinivich · 01/05/2024 16:21

I always thought his statements were to protect the potter reputation and therefore his income. As in, you can keep watching harry potter, kids, were not all awful.

But, reading his previous statement he ignored JKR concern about children and women rights, and focusing on the rights of men, then segways into a quote by the trevor project, a group promoting awareness of lgbt teen suicide prevention.

He said Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity.

Is it just me who reads that as - women should say TWAW because otherwise it will lead to children being harmed?

By critising JKR so publicly, he's critising all women and all parents for not being completely behind the ideology.

Thats not only unfair, its using his fame to manipulate how everyone can talk about womens rights and child safeguarding.

ArcaneWireless · 01/05/2024 16:20

Well quite.

And it speaks volumes for him that he did not.

Medical professionals aren't really "experts" in this situation.

The stuff about TWAW isn't a scientific or medical question.

The psychological well-being of trans people is a medical question, but we don't have the best quality evidence; and anyway, as soon as you get into questions of competing rights or wanting society to go along with someone's, er, "identity", then medical professionals are completely outside of their area of expertise.

Except that they know that biologically people can’t change sex. So yes, it’s fine to live your life in another gender if you want to, but to pretend that doing so changes your sex , gives you all the characteristics of another sex, and the legal rights of another sex is not fine at all.

ArcaneWireless · 01/05/2024 16:11

He is entitled to his own opinions sure, but I think that some loyalty would be appropriate given how much hate and demonisation she got.

So he doesn't have to agree with her, but he could have been speaking out to defend her right to speak and say that sections of the trans lobby were way too hostile. Assuming that's his genuine opinion of course.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't notice him doing much to stand up for free speech and civil debate over the issue.

This.

I don’t hate him.

But I do pity him for not being strong enough to speak out against everything she went through and continues to go through.

Silence is very powerful- even for the weak.

Thankfully JKR’s voice is stronger.

OkPedro · 01/05/2024 16:01

I had no idea that rolling stone was captured too 😒 I'd be hauling them through court if I was JKR

CactusMactus · 01/05/2024 15:52

Just seems like he is getting a little bit of attention off the back of JKR... so nothing new there.

This! He doesn’t have to agree with her but he could equally have called out the death threats and violence made against her but he didn’t

this was a woman he knew personally, who you would hope he’d know didn’t bear any hatred towards trans people

and he stood aside and let her be metaphorically ripped to shreds and even had the absolute nerve to apologise for her

I take that back then. I don't think he's a great actor, from what I've seen of his work on screen, but maybe he's better in the theatre.

I do think his earlier remarks about JKR not being qualified to talk about this issue were patronising and ill-advised, given that he is no better qualified but still feels able to take a side. I quite agree he doesn't owe her life-long loyalty, but it would have been nice if he or Emma Watson or Rupert Grint had found it within themselves to say that nobody deserves to receive the violent threats and abuse routinely levelled at J. K. Rowling since she dared to speak out for women's rights and safeguarding of the vulnerable.

LakeTiticaca · 01/05/2024 15:38

Don't worry. He will disappear into oblivion a long time before JKR ever does😉

To be fair he’s currently starring in a massive hit on Broadway. But that doesn’t show up on IMDB I guess.

Honestly. If you need an expert to tell you who's a woman mate, you're in more trouble than you think.

And funnily I had this conversation with my consultant at work the other day who 100percent supports Jo. As does every other medic I meet. There are a couple of doctors who are trans in my Trust. I saw one the other day and, god forgive me, I just thought what a shame all the work in the world with the best surgeons you still walk like a bloke. I would love to know whether he thinks she’s a woman.

I find all the hate a bit sad. He's expressing an opinion, just as JKR does. You may not agree with him, but the personal insults are a bit childish.

And said absolutely bugger all to condemn the threats of violence she received and continues to do so, for expressing her opinion

IncompleteSenten · 01/05/2024 15:27

He's too arrogant to ever admit that he was simply pandering to what he believed to be the popular opinion.

PorcelinaV · 01/05/2024 15:26

WarshipRocinante · 01/05/2024 15:07

None of them have said anything disrespectful or insulting. They’ve disagreed with her, which they are allowed to do, but they haven’t thrown insults or said anything disrespectful about her or her work.

That’s perfectly acceptable. People can voice their opinion. You’re saying he needs to show her loyalty because he got a job from a book she wrote. He doesn’t. No one needs to stay on side with anyone just because they got a job from them.

It is a ridiculous comment to make and I see it over and over on this site, “How dare he speak out against someone he owes his role as Harry to.” So what?

I disagree with him. I agree with JK Rowling. But her role as Harry Potter creator has absolutely nothing to do with who should be on her side.

He is entitled to his own opinions sure, but I think that some loyalty would be appropriate given how much hate and demonisation she got.

So he doesn't have to agree with her, but he could have been speaking out to defend her right to speak and say that sections of the trans lobby were way too hostile. Assuming that's his genuine opinion of course.

quantumbutterfly · 01/05/2024 15:25

He knew her, personally. She mentored him, and he was one who threw her under the trans bus and doubled down when she explained herself.

If you compare defending her to defending Jimmy Saville you need to get a grip. He gave you the creeps through a screen let alone real life and the people who benefited defended him until he was completely indefensible.
JKR has always come across as a thoughtful, principled person in her words and her actions.

ManchesterBeatrice · 01/05/2024 15:22

I really hate this narrative, that if a young person is given an opportunity by someone, that they then must agree with them for the rest of their life, it's so incredibly dangerous.

Actually, I don't really see the issue. It seems he genuinely believes that trans people will be in danger of committing suicide if you don't affirm them in the belief that they are literally the gender they believe themselves to be. So he said so. Why should he pretend to agree with Rowling if he doesn't? I'm glad Cass has made it possible to question that idea, but I think a lot of people Radcliffe's age really believe it.

I find the whole 'using your platform' thing really irritating. Famous people are going to have different opinion - some of them less well thought through than others. This idea that a famous person is somehow being irresponsible if they don't back one cause or another is what's fuelling cancel culture and attacks on free speech. It's all based on the idea that us 'little people' are so overawed by someone whose appeared on a big screen that we can't analyse what they're saying critically.
