Are you voting in the next general election purely on the transgender issue?

Just as the title says really! Is that your only thought about who you'll vote for, or will you look at wider policies? Been getting lots of information through my letter box recently, and none mention it.

Yes. I've always voted Labour in the past and I'm now thinking, "Did I ever really know what you were?" I live in a Red Wall constituency which elected a Tory MP for the first time at the last general election. I was horrified at the time and inclined to dislike him, but he seems to be a committed local MP and he is a strongly gender critical voice within the party so unless we get a convincing independent candidate with a proven track record I'll be voting for him.

Maddy70 · 30/04/2024 15:17

No. That would be a ridiculous thing to do. So many other issues are important. Health care. Schools. Welfare etc

Pieceofpurplesky · 30/04/2024 15:17

No.

I am a woman, a single mum and a carer. The tories have done nothing for me as a woman. The mess we are in now is because of them and it gets worse day by day.

Whilst the trans issue is an issue - the issue of women trying to survive day to day is much more important to me.

I just wish those saying they are voting on one issue would wake up and realise the position we are in right now is down to the Tory party. They will say absolutely anything to get your vote and won't act on a single promise.

Anaesthetistsrus · 30/04/2024 15:16

No party has mentioned this issue to me on the doorstep or in flyers.

The conservatives have not seen fit to address this issue - so no they certainly don’t get a free pass. Plus the last time I checked the transport, hospitals, doctors and schools, environment etc have all gone to shit since they’ve been in power. Oh and the corruption, rampant abuse of power and resources, and Brexit ffs!

That leaves Labour and the LibDems… neither party look after women and children right now.

I’m genuinely not sure what I’ll do.

No but it is 1 of a few reasons. Starmer is attacking private schools while he and his wife benefitted from a private education and he sees no problem with his DC benefitting from private facilities but wants to pull the drawbridge up after him. The pure hypocrisy is astounding all dressed up as social equality.
I am politically homeless.

Perhaps check your facts. Starmer went to Grammar school which became a private school when he attended and all grammar students continued with free education. His kids went to the local state primary - which happens to be a good school.

The education his wife had has no bearing whatsoever on him and his policies.
If you are going to make bold statements please get them right

Lifetime Labour voter here preparing to vote Tory (feels so strange!) because I can't risk Labour facilitating this ideology to make further inroads into women's and girls rights.

You look at the bigger picture of the country and what is best for it.

If you believe in the Tories and what they have done and care that much about their GC agenda, then vote for them.

If you care about public services at all, then vote for Labour.

If you simply stay quiet/ spoil your vote then frankly you don't get to have an opinion on the way things pan out over the next decade, because you didn't make an effort to stop it.

How many times do I have to tell you I've been spoiling my ballot at a national level for some time?

I'm an ex Labour party member in a rabidly Labour city. My local council was so corrupt and inept the government had to step in and oversee its functions for the last three years. I don't need lectures on politics, nor on how to look at the bigger picture ( I am!)

In the bigger picture - there is not going to be the revolutionary change that many are hoping for. Nationalising the railways might work out well, though...i hope so...but even then Labour have said train fares will not be cheaper.

BreatheAndFocus · 30/04/2024 15:08

Or vote for the most GC party - and then, when the message is sent loud and clear that you don’t ignore and denigrate women, we can get on with the other things. If we vote your way round, we risk being shafted.

Arealnumber · 30/04/2024 15:08

Yes. I could never vote for Starmer - a lawyer who doesn't know what a woman is. In fact I don't think I'll ever be able to bring myself to vote for Labour again - I see through leftist misogyny since all this gender BS has come to light.

littlbrowndog · 30/04/2024 15:07

Yes as in Scotland as a woman I am now a hateful person as I support womens and children’s rights

also I am probably racist and transphobic according to our dear departed leader

BrieOnToast · 30/04/2024 15:07

I can't get past the whole Rwanda thing, that alone would stop me voting Tory. However, they have also destroyed women's rights in the 14 years they've been in power. They were the ones who had the ultimate say in men being allowed in women's prisons, for example, and they chose to allow it.

Polishedshoesalways · 30/04/2024 15:07

Yes.

I have 2 dds, and can not live with myself if I didn’t vote to keep them safe, to give them a chance of equality, to ensure their rights stay in tact.

RebelliousCow · 30/04/2024 14:59

Because a vote has to have positive meaning, and I have to have integrity. I cannot vote for my local MP. Not only has she refused to meet with women in her constituency on the issue, but she is one of the biggest TRA activists in the party. You cannot vote for someone with whom you have a fundamental issue. Well, I can't anyway.

BreatheAndFocus · 30/04/2024 15:03

Yes. It’s not ‘the transgender issue’ to me, it’s women’s rights and recognition as full human beings. I am absolutely fuming about the way this has played out! Putting men in women’s prisons; letting men compete against women in sport; and, most of all, the nasty insidious misogyny and dismissal of women’s legitimate concerns as ‘transphobia’.

It’s shown how far we still have to go and how quickly some men will dismiss us as ‘dinosaurs’ and ‘silly women on Mumsnet’.

BigPepperPerson · 30/04/2024 15:03

yes

RebelliousCow · 30/04/2024 15:02

ringoffiire · 30/04/2024 14:57

@RebelliousCow Well I do agree with this - "You don't treat people like shit - and then expect them to vote for you" - which is exactly why I can't understand anyone who would let the Tories retain power after what they have done to our public services.

If you spoil your vote, I hope you and your family do not need the NHS, the legal system, schools, police or any other public services in the coming years.

Edited

Are you trying to shame me? I'm an ex teacher, my daughter is currently a teacher, and yes I use the NHS and other public services.

You have some seriously high hopes for what a Labour government will achieve. I live in a Labour city, anyway - and my vote will make no difference to the outcome in my constitunecy.

Sayingnothing · 30/04/2024 15:01

I'm a floating voter, tend to vote on a combination of overall party policies and strength of local candidates but feel more politically homeless this time than ever before. I won't vote Tory because they're responsible for the mess the country is in overall and have been far too slow on the trans issue but can't vote Labour or Lib Dem because I genuinely believe they will damage women's rights and fail to protect children, talk about a rock and a hard place! All the issues I've mentioned are of equal importance to me so I don't feel I have any viable options, let alone good ones. I would happily vote Labour this time were it not for the women's rights/harm to children issue though so yes, I suppose it is the deciding factor for me.

And looking "long and hard" at Wales and Scotland don't make me vote Tory. The Tories still manage to come out bottom for me. Amazing isn't it when you look at the SNP!

Amazing isn’t the word I’d use when the Tories perform better than Labour and SNP, despite those parties having had years to show how well their policies function and how they uphold the rights of women and girls.

Desecratedcoconut · 30/04/2024 14:57

Yes. I keep thinking Labour will come to their senses in time and unveil a back to reality approach to sex and gender, even as recently as watching the turns in the wake of the Cass review, but then here comes Starmer with his whole mealy-mouthed bullshit that ignores their role and intolerance of those in the party who were deemed modern day blasphemers that demonstrates the rubber band instinct back to gender woo. You can keep your faith based narratives in politics that swamp reality, truth and freedom to speak clearly and the cascade of shit that falls on women and girls so you can remain a true believer - you can even pretend all that is a single issue. But it's not for me.

ringoffiire · 30/04/2024 14:57

AutumnCrow · 30/04/2024 14:57

No I'm not voting on 'the transgender issue' because I don't recognise a 'transgender issue' as existing. It's a men's rights issue. This is exactly the same shit as in the Dworkin/Ginsberg era, is as old as the hills, and I'll be voting for women's rights, children's safeguarding, and economic security for women.

Hopefully an Independent or Morning Star-aligned candidate will emerge in my constituency but I'm not holding my breath.

And yes to pp, I think Penny TWAW Mordaunt will be a disaster for the Tories, and frankly they deserve her. She's like a pastiche of Gillian Anderson impersonating Margaret Thatcher with half the brain cells. Labour under Starmer are lost to me, ditto Lib Dems under Davey and the Greens under the current shitshow. Even Daisy Cooper (LD), of whom I had high hopes, lost the plot.

Peace & Socialism ✌

ehb102 · 30/04/2024 14:55

Yes. It's the basis of our Society. We can change economic policies but writing women out of law will be irreversible.

RebelliousCow · 30/04/2024 14:53

I also don't agree with making menopause a protected characteristic. 'Sex' is enough - but it needs clear definition. Theer are some people who want to separate out all of women's physical characteristics and give them protection - so that they can include men in the definition of women.

RebelliousCow · 30/04/2024 14:50

ringoffiire · 30/04/2024 14:37

So, you are happy with the way the Tory government uphold women's rights and represent you as a woman?

Even though:

  • They voted against Stella Creasey’s amendment to make misogyny a hate crime
  • They have not forced the police to prioritise violent crimes such as rape and domestic abuse, despite pledges from the Home Secretary
  • They rejected the Women and Equalities Committee’s recommendation to make menopause a protected characteristic
  • The average wait for a rape case to go to court is three years
  • The extortionate price of early-years education is pushing parents (mostly women) out of the labour market

The Tories will argue that their position on gender self-ID shows they are willing to stand up for women’s rights.

But until they begin to address issues in the workforce and issues of violence against women and girls, there is little to suggest that their sudden commitment to protecting women is anything other than opportunistic.

I've said I'll be spoiling my vote - again. I will only vote if i can vote for someone with confidence. Given Labour's history over the last six or seven years - they have a lot of apologising to do before i can trust them again. You don't treat people like shit - and then expect them to vote for you.

Stella Creasy would have included men in the definition of women.
