Are you voting in the next general election purely on the transgender issue?

Just as the title says really! Is that your only thought about who you'll vote for, or will you look at wider policies? Been getting lots of information through my letter box recently, and none mention it.

If I have a Party of Women, SDP or Communist candidate I will vote for them. Otherwise I will spoil my ballot paper.

Lifelong Labour voter, but can't vote for any party who doesn't give a shit about my rights (which also includes Lib Dems and Greens, who if anything are even more batshit on this issue). Neither can I vote Tory - they're no friend to women, and their view of people with disabilities is inhumane.

RhubarbCurd · 30/04/2024 15:53

No - but it's up there with other issues - Education and NHS being big ones and it's kind of entwined in those anyway.

However neither Tory nor Labour look great - and not sure how else is standing here.

If you spoiled your ballot and knew that as a result the Tories would stay in power, or Labour would get into power, would you still do it?

If you knew that your one vote would make the difference, would you still spoil it?

You are being driven by your perceived powerlessness. Don't be.

People spoiled their Brexit ballot thinking it wouldn't make a difference, to make some kind of point, assuming that we would remain, because everyone else would vote that way.

But it did make a difference. Nobody cared about what point they thought they were making, and we left the EU.

Use your vote to vote.

Edited

Labour can't win in my constituency, it's between the Tories and the Lib Dems.

I'd like to spoil my ballot because I don't want either of them to win, but it's actually getting to the point where I am considering voting Tory for the first time ever because I think the Lib Dems are worse than the Tories and I want as few of them in the House of Commons as possible.

I have voted for them in 3 out of the last 5 general elections.

Sorry that's not the answer you appear to be looking for.

DialSquare · 30/04/2024 15:48

Only ever voted Labour but not anymore. Won't be voting Tory either. Had a leaflet from an independent through the door today who looks promising. Will email him to ask his opinion on women's rights.

Clearly the issue to which this board is dedicated means nothing much to you - but it does to many other of us.

Do not put words into my mouth.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 30/04/2024 15:42

Spoiling your ballot is not the same as not voting. It's saying "none of the above". It's no less legitimate than voting for a party which has no choice of winning in your constituency.

I wouldn't be considering spoiling my ballot if there were a party to vote for which doesn't appear to hate women.

That's unacceptable.

Labour should be a party which supports women's rights.

The Lib Dems should be a party which supports women's rights.

Why aren't they?

@RebelliousCow I refer you back to my post about the Tories track record with women's rights on page 5 of this thread.

The choice is between Labour and the Tories, as it ever was.

If both parties are shit on women's rights, at least Labour stand a chance of bringing back the NHS from the brink of destruction.

FlakyPoet · 30/04/2024 15:43

Yes. I spoilt my ballot a few times and am considering voting Tory - especially after the current performances of Cates, Badenoch, Atkins, etc, but Rishi Sunak taking a pop at disabled people and ill people - calling it ‘sick note’ culture is making me think I might not after all. I’m not sick or disabled, it’s a matter of principle though.

Have you any awareness at all of how lots of Labour women have been treated by the Labour party these last seven years?

If you think nationalising the railways might work out well, then vote for it.

Sorry but I simply do not have any respect for people who weigh in on political topics but then spoil their vote.

Yes things are shit and no one is denying that, and I don't hear anyone saying that they think any party is perfect.

But if you don't vote or spoil your ballot, then you passed on your right to an opinion.

Brexit happened partly because everyone thought that other people wouldn't vote for it so felt emboldened to spoil their vote/ not vote/ vote for Brexit when they didn't mean it.

If you think the railways should be nationalised then don't assume others will vote for it. Vote for it yourself.

Of course you will.

Just don't complain about how things go with the NHS, schools and public services in the coming years if you didn't express a preference for them to be saved.

I take a longer range view of the state of affairs. I've taken to observing patterns.

Did I mention I was a teacher and that my daughter still is?

Your're new to this forum, aren't you? I'll not be voting for Labour for the reasons that many of us here won't be.

Your respect means nothing to me. Not a jot. For the reason you have a monumental comprehension fail as to the scale and import of the issue to which this forum is dedicated.

A spoiled ballot is an opinion - it is not a failure to vote. You vote for who you like - and I'll do what feels right to me.

Perhaps check your facts. Starmer went to Grammar school which became a private school when he attended and all grammar students continued with free education. His kids went to the local state primary - which happens to be a good school.

The education his wife had has no bearing whatsoever on him and his policies.
If you are going to make bold statements please get them right

Actually it does really matter because he is saying that it is OK for people like his family to be privately educated but not other people, unless they are ultra wealthy. The Labour Party have double the amount of MPs who were privately educated than the national %.

No. I will never vote in any election based on a single issue. And I will never vote Tory again. The bastards in blue have had a long enough run at destroying the country. Time for a change.

ringoffiire · 30/04/2024 15:32

RebelliousCow · 30/04/2024 15:08

How many times do I have to tell you I've been spoiling my ballot at a national level for some time?

I'm an ex Labour party member in a rabidly Labour city. My local council was so corrupt and inept the government had to step in and oversee its functions for the last three years. I don't need lectures on politics, nor on how to look at the bigger picture ( I am!)

In the bigger picture - there is not going to be the revolutionary change that many are hoping for. Nationalising the railways might work out well, though...i hope so...but even then Labour have said train fares will not be cheaper.

It’s amazing that so many people are thinking the Tories are amazing for doing a last minute “we’ll fix it” u-turn on the shit show they have presided over and allowed to happen, as well as ignoring all the other ways in which they show their complete disregard for women and girls.

Shows how shit our politicians are when the deciding factor for so many is “they’ve promised to u-turn first”

Decent politicians of the past, of all parties, must be spinning in their graves at what we have now

Gettingbysomehow · 30/04/2024 15:27

I'm afraid not. There are only two candidates in my area Tory or Lib Dems - the others never get in. So we'll either get a Tory or Lib Dem MP that's how it's always been here.
I'm voting Lib Dem which I never have in my life before because our tory MPs in this area have been so awful and done nothing for any of us.
The last one was off sick for a year and spent the rest of his time snorting cocaine and having affairs which he blamed on his mental health of course and the one in the next constituency along was sacked for watching graphic porn publicly in parliament.

DrCoconut · 30/04/2024 15:26

I'm a single mum with two disabled children. My oldest has already had his PIP withdrawn. I have never and will never vote Tory because I actually like my family.

AhNowTed · 30/04/2024 15:25

userlotsanumbers · 30/04/2024 15:12

Lifetime Labour voter here preparing to vote Tory (feels so strange!) because I can't risk Labour facilitating this ideology to make further inroads into women's and girls rights.

And the Tories have helped women and children over the past 14 years how exactly?

SidewaysOtter · 30/04/2024 15:25

Yes.

Because despite what the scolders on this thread would hector us into thinking, I recognise that the Tories are at least doing something about the women's rights shitshow, as opposed to Labour. And I do trust the current Tories more on the economy. You only have to look at Wales to see what a binfire Labour can be.

Women's rights is what I care about at this election and it's the defining factor for my choice. So those who are bleating on about "Think about the greater good" can fuck off.

AhNowTed · 30/04/2024 15:23

No.

After 14 years of this corrupt shower, I have other priorities.

OK so why was he at a competition between GDST schools last night? Watching his daughter compete? I know my facts thank you. The fact remains he is happy to reap the benefits for him and his family but want to deprive others of the same by making private education even more expensive.
