Just as the title says really! Is that your only thought about who you'll vote for, or will you look at wider policies? Been getting lots of information through my letter box recently, and none mention it.

That's alright. It's hard going.

You have the tone of someone disagreeing with me while having the same opinion, I'm not sure what to say 😁

You’re right. Sorry my mistake! I’m getting frazzled with the denials of women’s and children’s rights.

Wherewerewerewear · 30/04/2024 19:24

Oh dear. It’s not a single issue. Women’s and children’s rights are affected in many ways. Frankly I am ‘agog’ that others can’t or won’t see it.

Another poster put it quite well. Sorry PP I can’t find your name but if it’s you thank you!

Yes

I'm still agog that posters consider women's rights, material reality, free speech, the vilification of heretical MPs, the disregard of healthcare principles and the consequential harming of children, the decimation of sports, the gender blundering in the prison service, the mangling of language generally but particularly in our institutions and thrust upon a generation of kids in their schooling a single issue?

Regardless of how you land when in comes to a general election.

My vote will be based on my desire to safeguard women and girls (and boys) basic rights, yes.

This is an issue of fundamental human rights and of my expectation to live in a society which recognises and upholds the basic human rights of women and girls, and which upholds safeguarding for children.

So I don't regard it as a ' single issue' but a fundamental human rights issue..

Spendonsend · 30/04/2024 19:21

I think i will be voting based on the talk about withdrawing from the ECHR.

‘Are you voting in the next general election purely on the transgender issue?’

If you mean are you voting on the women’s and children’s rights issue?

Yes.

Previousreligion · 30/04/2024 19:04

No. I'm not a one issue voter and cannot vote for the Conservatives after Brexit, Truss and Boris.

How many times do I have to tell you I've been spoiling my ballot at a national level for some time?

I'm an ex Labour party member in a rabidly Labour city. My local council was so corrupt and inept the government had to step in and oversee its functions for the last three years. I don't need lectures on politics, nor on how to look at the bigger picture ( I am!)

In the bigger picture - there is not going to be the revolutionary change that many are hoping for. Nationalising the railways might work out well, though...i hope so...but even then Labour have said train fares will not be cheaper.

Edited

I well remember sitting on the floor of a corridor the whole way of a long and very expensive journey to the North - during the time before the railways were privatised.

Also, Lord Beeching axed and wrecked swathes of railway infrastructure in the 1960s ( due to there not being enough money to run them)- all of course before privatisation.

So though the idea of re-nationalising the railways (and water) is certainly seductive, especially if you could sit again in the dining car with a a silver plated tea pot and a China cup and saucer, and bring back the glory of a much loved institution, it might not be easy to bring about the improvements everyone would so love to see.

CheshireCat1 · 30/04/2024 17:28

No

Vaccances · 30/04/2024 17:23

I ve voted Tory many times in the past, Thatcher Major, i quite liked Cameron though i did vote LD in 2010.. all far more moderate than the current Tory party.

I understand the TWAW issues but its simply not enough for me n my DD (who is NHS) to even consider the Conservatives.

They ve wrecked everything, poverty DV health and dentistry all worse than in 2010.
They can't even keep tabs on migrants and failed to deport a known isis fighter from Libya and he went on to kill 3 people in Reading, shocking dereliction of duty.

Wales isn't even a separate country, so i don't understand why people bring them into it, they are very much controlled by what Westminster decides & they cannot be that bad, the Welsh have voted Lab back for over 25 years.

Globe22 · 30/04/2024 17:19

No I’m voting to get the Tories out and so I’ll vote Labour. Gender issues are way down my priority list at present. Also voting Labour in the London elections although that’s mainly to piss off all the right wing wankers like Susan Hall.

AutumnCrow · 30/04/2024 17:19

It's just odd that Starmer is just chucking so many votes away.

zeibesaffron · 30/04/2024 17:18

absolutely not - voting on all manner of policies mostly nhs and education! I am not saying its not important but its only one part of the current issues.

SammyScrounge · 30/04/2024 17:16

Yes. The railroading children on to the transgender path to mitilation is child abuse as far as I'm concerned.
Schools should be.cleared of transgender materials and activists. No other political group is allowed into schools 9so why they should.is a mystery to me.

AutumnCrow · 30/04/2024 17:15

Perhaps the question is, why can the Leader of HM Official Opposition not clearly say that sex is immutable and it matters, and give us a credible Party to vote for gladly?

Spoiled ballots ('rejected ballots') are adjudicated by the A(RO) in the presence of the candidates and their agents.

Rejected ballots are currently divided into four sub-categories - want of official mark; voting for more than one candidate; writing or mark by which the voter could be identified; unmarked or void for uncertainty. These are published as part of the election results.

In some city council elections in my area, wards have been won or lost on a handful of votes. There have been hung councils. I know that the Lib Dems, for example, pore over results and data in their target cities and regions - it was one of the tricks that Chris ('Lord') Rennard really pushed hard on. Street by street analyses. Gradually taking over Councils.

Interesting, thanks.

If it could be a close run thing between the Tories and the Lib Dems in my constituency, a spoiled ballot could tell the Lib Dems exactly why they lost my vote, whereas a vote for the Tories wouldn't.

Well I believe there is always a less bad option.

And I believe that it's better to vote for the option you think is less bad, than try to make some kind of point by spoiling your ballot (because in reality, I don't believe that doing that does make a point at all).

We are all in a shitty situation of having to choose between options that we feel are not quite right. I don't know a single person who actually believes strongly that any politician is going to make big improvements and turn things around.

We are really all in the same boat and I am just trying to urge people to consider voting for what they think it the least bad option, rather than wasting their vote.

Here's a question then.

If nobody strongly believes that any particular party is capable of turning things around, why all the emotional blackmail to get the Tories out at any cost?

SoundTheSirens · 30/04/2024 16:58

YOU believe there is always a less bad option. Not everyone here agrees with you this time around.

You get your vote, to use (or not) as you wish. You, and the other hectoring posters, don't get anyone else's votes, so leave us to do with ours as we will and we'll afford you the same courtesy.

I don't expect everyone to agree with me and am not sure where I said that (in fact, I'm encouraging people to vote, regardless of whether or not I agree with them). I am discussing and challenging people, and being challenged in return, which is fine and expected, especially on a political thread.

I am not being rude or insulting to anyone so I'm not sure why you accuse me of 'hectoring' anyone.

I'm simply responding to posts and stating my view, because that's what a discussion forum is for.

Because Im not, I am a lone parent of a sen child. But I believe in good economics and currently with the gender issues at play, its tipping me in the balance of the Tories as it too is v close to my heart.

A lone parent of a SEN child and you think the Tories are the best bet? Is your grasp of history not very good by any chance.

Blackcats7 · 30/04/2024 16:57

No. I don’t actually trust any of them on gender ideology as yet. The tories would say the moon is made of cheese if they thought it would get them more votes. Labour have been flip floppy but I have to vote for them to get the tories out so I just have to hope for better things to come on the what is a woman question.
There have been a few cross party mps who have championed women who I admire very much so there is right on both sides in that degree at least.
Obviously would never touch greens with a mouldy barge pole, would not consider lib dems as I still remember the treacherous coalition.
