Are you voting in the next general election purely on the transgender issue?

Just as the title says really! Is that your only thought about who you'll vote for, or will you look at wider policies? Been getting lots of information through my letter box recently, and none mention it.

@EasternStandard yes I’ve seen Dodd’s statement about the GRA last year and similar. I don’t think these amount to policy statements, I don’t think they will make it into the manifesto, and I don’t think they will happen. The new government will have its hands full trying to sort out the economic and institutional shitshow that they will inherit. The party are already throwing a bone to the activists (VAT on private schools), they’re not going to do anything else ideological, particularly anything that wouldn’t have broad support in the country.

Ok so if I understand you correctly you think they will just not mention modernising the GRA again, nor changing anything to do with single sex spaces

A kind of leave it out altogether

Not sure but it’s a new take, I’ll have to ponder on that

I do follow and contribute to threads here thanks. It’s not stated policy unless it is stated in the policy documents. That’s pretty much the definition of stated policy.

Until then it’s just opinion.

Labour have released statements

That’s not just a random view in an interview. Have you seen those?

Soigneur · 05/05/2024 16:39

EasternStandard · 05/05/2024 16:33

It is stated policy, not random wittering in interviews

If you follow some threads on FWR you’ll pick up on the statements

There’s a difference between the random witherings of politicians in interviews and stated party policy.

Labour have made many statements on gender. Contradictory and waffle but they are there

Indeed, including that babies are born without a sex.

The poster I was replying to said that it was stated policy. It doesn’t appear to be stated in their policy documents. So what does ‘stated policy’ actually mean in this case?

Disingenuous of you to suggest that if it's not in the Mission statement it's not going to be implemented. They don't include anything in the mission statement that they know will be unpopular — and they know that that trans-rights (whatever that may be, because transgender people have exactly the same rights as anyone else) aren't popular with 78%+ of the population.

Exactly.

How is voting for more of the same going to help?!

I think we need to bear in mind who is responsible for this shit show in the first place, Labour when they introduced the GRA. They then amended it to say that you could actually change sex, and legally falsify your birth certificate to incorporate a lie.

I'd love to get rid of the Tories but the SDP, the Labour Party, The Greens, Lib Dems are all a bit captured or captivated by trans 🤔

Send them all back to science class, get them to read the Cass report, agree that 'do no harm' to vulnerable children is vital and up spending on mental health issues dramatically

I agree, especially *do no harm to vulnerable children^

Any more adult peddling of confusing rubbish, which then affects vulnerable children, is abominable and out of the question imo.

I don't want to be a single issue voter and I want a change of government. I don't want to vote Tory and believe regular regime change is essential for a healthy democracy, but I really struggle to get past this issue.

So many politicians have shown themselves to be self-serving and cowardly liars on this issue. I have lost respect for almost all of them. I genuinely don't know who to vote for.

In the elections this week I voted for an independent candidate for London mayor and eventually stuck the other two sheets blank into the ballot box. That's a bit shit - I don't want to do that for the general election. I have previously spoilt my ballot with pro-women's rights message. My current plan is to write to my MP (labour, shadow cabinet) and see if I can get some kind of positive response. I suspect he is quietly GC, if only because he hasn't come out publicly with anything to the contrary.

I'm writing to all possible candidates in my area too. They need to be reminded of important issues.

Yup, this is where 25 years of Welsh Labour government get you. And at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'm a Labour party member.

So they are for testing puberty blockers on children causing irreparable damage.

Labour's policies (which will form their manifesto when an election is called) are here: Missions – The Labour Party

Can you point out where these policies that you refer to are stated?

Maybe you missed this bit

He added: "Everybody knows there is a difference between sex and gender. I absolutely understand that and respect that. We will not be going down the road of self identification."

So if he knows there's a difference between sex and gender, why did he talk about being born into a gender? He says one thing and contradicts it with another.

I trust him as far as I could throw him - and I'm a member of the Labour Party. There are an awful lot of Labour members who feel the same way. Starmer is no more popular than Corbyn was, from what I can see. Corbyn was loved/ hated because of what he stood for. Starmer is neither loved nor hated, but no one can say with any certainty what he stands for or what he thinks and so no one trusts him.

GRA from Labour

Out of interest have you helped women in any way or are you more a no one cares poster who hinders?

Are you glad we have the Cass review and stopped puberty blockers? Any action to get there or more Labour focussed over that

“the principle of safe spaces is very important for women”

Sir Kier is a lawyer. A good one. He chooses his words with care. The ‘principle’ not the actual practice. ‘Safe’ not single sex spaces. ‘Women’ as in legally a woman.

The Labour Party absolutely has been very successfully hijacked by TRAs as have many/most progressive institutions. It’s not just Starmer but many MPs. Not the least of which is ‘choose your own prison estate’ Nandy and Cooper and Balls’s son is very much a TRA.

I fully expect to find that the TRAs ‘rights’ agenda will be considerably advanced under our impending Labour government.

The Cass report may hold back the tide of vulnerable young people being permanently harmed but there is no doubt in my mind that the TRA agenda will continue to roll out under Labour and that adult women will be the losers.

14 years of government that's happy to alter, or ignore, legislation when it benefits them. 14 years.

I think you are dismissing the fact that up to very recently it had not entered the conscious mind of the public nor the political parties that this was very damaging for women and girls. It’s only the efforts of places like MN and JKR and others prepared to speak up that we have evolved as far as we have.

Labour have not evolved at all in this time. That is the issue.

But Labour's actual stated policies are still "modernise the GRA" and "introduce a trans inclusive ban on conversion therapy".

This doesn’t mean I’m voting Tory for the first time in my life. If there are no independents, then it may mean that I spoil my ballot for the first time in my life.

Still no recognition of Labour GRA which is why we have this mess.

You may have missed recent reversals including puberty blockers and the Cass report. Hopefully Labour don’t row back on the gains women have got, including women on FWR
