The Grauniad on a damaging “reality” show

Another slanted take from The Guardian on a trans story. It seems to me that the main take from this sad tale should be that lying, or concealing the truth, has consequences. But the article doesn’t really mention that angle.

‘She was tough, but it broke her’: why There’s Something About Miriam was reality TV’s most shameful low

From Miriam being ‘revealed’ as a transgender woman to the contestants trashing the set, it was the cruellest reality show ever. Ahead of a new series about its tragic fallout, Miriam’s brother and friend open up for the first time about her death

That's quite a sad thought, that Miriam was possibly coerced (maybe unwittingly) into making money from the trans persona because that was the best chance to support Miriam's family.

Like the Thai "ladyboys", but probably/possiblly/hopefully not going quite as far.

How is that different to Jazz Jennings?

Or even Jackie Green tbh?

Going back to the OP, there are two other dimensions to Miriam's story.
First, Miriam was from South America, whereas the lads were from UK. Miriam came from a community where men are often smaller, slender and so physically more like white British women than like like white British men. That seems to me to be an important aspect of trans identity- the child who does not look like their peers.

Second, Miriam's brother says Miriam had been providing for the family. How? Her modelling and it says here ballroom dancing? Was there a premium for being trans? Certainly TSAM was based on the premise of Miriam's transness. That looks to me like a financial incentive for adults to encourage effeminate boys to transition in order to exploit their earnings in sex work or adjacent industries.

@Vegandiva I only watched 5 minutes but there is no clue for me that Miriam is not a woman.
The optics of 6 chunky white men competing for one small brown woman are shocking, even without the twist.

What I find deeply ironic is this forums insistence it isn't an echo chamber, vs how posters who deviate from the group think are demonstrably treated.

i find it terribly uplifting that even though we don't agree on everything, the one thing we do agree on here is that trans rights are men's rights, and we continue to fight for all women's rights. We are extremely consistent on that despite some pretty sickening slanderous accusations from the TRA lobby (that we hate trans people, that we wish them out of existance and that we don't want them to have rights)

Thank you for bringing the conversation back to the OP 🙂

Miriam was actually North American as Mexico is part of North America. But I saw someone else say that Miriam was South American either in news articles or on the show itself, too. And yes, there are a lot of slim small young men in Mexico.

I went down a little rabbit hole on this and started watching the first episode of the show as I was curious what the gentleman pictured in the Grauniad article looked like 20 years ago, so in case anyone else was curious here it is

It’s my opinion it’s the voices that usually seal the deal to give the game away if all the other things didn’t before that.

And I am obviously not a man, as even a cursory search would show 😂
For some reason in the last year posters seem to have lost the ability to deal with male usernames Confused

This is a discussion about a man pretending to be a woman. The sex-coding of your username is relevant.

We often get the ‘no one cares’ posters

And yet politicians are starting to cover their arses on this

Not all of course, Butler and co are still full gender borg but some absolutely reverse ferreting

Good. Although they tend to be gaslighting fuckers at the same time. Other than that reverse… beep beep beep (politicians that is)

Edited

Yeah no-one cares, no-one is talking about it, then all of a sudden reverse gear selected, disassociation,, distancing and claims of we were misled/didn't understand from politicians, et al and the spectacular implosion of the SNP/Green coalition in Scotland, but no, no-one cares or is talking about it, it doesn't matter. Pull the other one it's got bells on it.

illinivich · 28/04/2024 13:55

If most people dont pay attention to what is going on, the council funded trans awareness initiatives are a spectacular waste of money. All those flags, and no one sees them.

The one place on the whole of the internet where GC women can speak (almost) freely without getting booted off can hardly be described as an echo chamber. It’s more of a supportive refuge from the insanity of what is going on both in the real world and online. We are all subject to other insane views in every other aspect of our lives. And in fact if this were an echo chamber you probably wouldn’t be on here periodically calling women right wing and chiding them for considering not voting Labour for the first time in their lives.

Terref · 28/04/2024 13:26

Responding to women's concerns about the wholesale dismantling of women's rights and pushing of unevidenced medical treatments onto vulnerable children with 'for god's sake, seek help' is clear gaslighting.

Women are very, very familiar with this tactic. We've been dismissed as 'hysterical' for centuries.

The problem is not our emotional response. The problem is the injustice.

It's not us that's mad.

Men can access the much needed support services. That’s a great idea

EasternStandard · 28/04/2024 13:26

Scottish politics has been fun to watch too

And the ending of puberty blockers, the Cass Review, all the backlash from the angry

All good, the flimsy house of cards that it is

Terref · 28/04/2024 13:26

MrsOvertonsWindow · 28/04/2024 13:14

The poster who you are so desperately trying to defend spends many posts giving endless presentations of their own experiences as reasons for children to be gaslit into abandoning their future fertility, physical and mental health.
You may describe women and parents prioritising safeguarding children as "group think" - women on here see it as a basic responsibility in any democratic society.

It's depressing that so many individuals, especially men, seem to find safeguarding children a challenge to understand and prioritise.

😂
I have a sneaking suspicion you are about to get a very big shock.
Most people aren't paying enough attention to this issue to have a strong view. Of the people that are, not everyone thinks like you.

Will be interesting to see how the PoW candidates do on Thursday.

Still conversing I see. Why? you have no stamina for not conversing.

What’s the shock going to be exactly, Starmer and the gender borg incoming?

Labour are woeful, and up to their eyes in gender lies but we’ll see

I can see the shift and how annoyed various people get, including you. All good imo. Love the pro women posters that find the pro men arguments irrelevant

AdamRyan · 28/04/2024 13:19

EasternStandard · 28/04/2024 13:15

There are a fair few women who post pro women posts

Great I love to see it. More than that I’m noticing rl change in the shift to politics and policy

More power to the clear and reasoned posts on FWR, which I have no doubt have played a part. Keep going.

I'm not a man and I'm not "desperately trying to defend that poster". I'm pointing out the pile on to them is disproportionate to what was actually said.

This has no relation to the topic or discussion on this thread and is just you beating your usual "child safeguarding means ban all trans people" drum.

I don't think it's group think to point out that despite all the drugs and surgery and feelz and beliefs, it doesn't take Aston Uni's forensic linguistics tool to notice when posters have been brought up with male socialisation and male privilege.
