Is "openly Jewish" a hate crime under the April Fools Scottish hate crime law?

A Metropolitan police officer threatened to arrest a man for being "Openly Jewish" in London. Is this a hate crime in Scotland under the new hate crime laws?

I think it is. Could someone report it for me please I find it incredibly offensive and racist. I want to see what happens when Scottish Police try to get involved with racist actions taken by the Metropolitan Police.

What a out the other 80% of Arabs who are forced to live in a concentration camps?
Palestinians don't count?

Gods look at this idiot, who has zero clue that Israeli Arabs are 20% of the population with equal rights.
Meanwhile none of these humane anti-zionists have as much of a word of sympathy for the kidnapped and possibly raped French Jewish woman.
Because Jews don't count.

Deflection and namecalling, is that what's used as arguments round here?

Hi, I don't think Isreal-as an ethno state established by extream violence in a place with a native population not of the favored ethnicity -should exist, no.
Can I ask if you think Arabs are human beings with the same rights as other human beings?

By 'against Zionism', do you mean you don't think Israel should exist?

The question about the difference between Zionism and antisemitism is a VERY very complicated and multifaceted one. The official debate in the video has 4 experts with huge experience and knowledge. 2 saying that both are the same, and 2 saying that they are very different and not linked (although they can be in some cases). There is NO way this can be resumed in a few sentences. Don't watch of course if you don't want to. And if I gave a summary, you would not trust or believe me.

Far too complex, and far too important, for a non expert like me to summarise, that would be really stupid indeed.

lechiffre55 · 24/04/2024 17:30

@fungipie
There's this thing people do in a debate/discussion where they tell you to go off and read a whole book that explains their point, or read a bunch of reports, or "google it", or "educate yourself", or in this case watch a two hour debate that explains your points. But here's the thing the person telling someone to look to other sources is never able to explain the key points of the books/report/etc.. themselves. To them it all sounds great but they are never able to express those points to another person.
When you're in a debate with someone it's your job to put forwards the points that make your case. Telling them to go off a read a bunch of stuff that agrees with your point doesn't work, because why should they invest all that time and effort? If it's too much trouble for you to draw out the main points and present them, why should they put in much more effort? If you're debating someone and want to change their mind, or prove a point you have to actually do that, you can't put the onus on the other party to do the work for you.
It also always makes me think the other person doesn't really understand their own argument if they can't present the main points. This further demotivates me from putting in all the extra effort if the other person probably doesn't even understand the source they are throwing at me.

If you precised the video you linked by saying, and I'm utterly making this up just as an example, Dr X explains how population Y has geographically migrated through history, and then goes on to explain how their migration affected indigeous peoples of P, Q, and R over time. Then examines the conflicts between them and the fallout of those conflicts on Y and the P, Q, and R which demonstrates ( your point here ).
At least the other person has an idea of what relevance/point you are trying to make. "Watch this two hour video it explains all my points" is just pointless. No one ever sits there for two hours watching a random video if a person can't give reasons for their argument that are backed up in the video. e.g. "at 47 minutes in Dr X discusses the meeting between populations Y and Q, which are the people we are arguing about" Can you see how that works?
Flinging sources at people that require investment to understand does not work unless you can at least precise the arguments presented in the source, thus giving that source context within whatever it is you are debating.
Otherwise it just looks stupid.

Far too complex for me to do so in my own words. And I am no historian nor specialist. Don't bother to watch this truly informed and balanced debate, very well chaired and with a very mixed audience. There is no was I could present all the points made in the debate in a few words of my own. And you wouldn't trust or believe me either.

Watch or don't watch. But don't accuse me of antisemitism or racism.

No, I would be told I am biased and that I don't know what I am talking about.

This debate was in 2019 btw- so way before october 7th. It airs the pov of both sides, in a very informative way- much better than I could ever do. It amazes me that some people have strong views about this 'conflict' - and yet are not prepared to read and listen about the very real issues.

Rebellious cow, did you watch the debate? Or is your mind too closed to even be prepared to listen.

I'd rather you explained in your own words. People could then debate or discuss your points. I don't have time to sit and watch random videos that people post - certainly not when they are that long. I don't normally post you tube vids, myself - the one I posted earlier is about 4 minutes long and encapsulates the issues with pro Palestinian marchers and disguised anti semitism hiding behind anti zionist rhetoric. It featured a marcher in her own words.

i have taken the trouble to understand the history of the Jews, of Israel and the history of anti semitism because I was sick and tired of utterly one sided views on the conflict. We all tend to know what the anti Israel arguments are because they are well documented and well supported and vocalised and have been for years. What is less documented is the other side of the story.

No one side has total responsibility for anything. -which is how anti Israel arguments tend to get framed - with hyperbolic arguments that lack in awareness of even some of the most obvious historical facts or events.
I'm countering that.

I haven't read the full thread so apologies if this has already been mentioned

I'm not Jewish but have been shocked and horrified by the antisemitism that's happening. Regarding the Met Police, and relevant to a thread on the feminist board, I'm concerned about Jewish domestic abuse victims. I have a family member who's been through domestic abuse. I dread to think how difficult it must be for Jewish victims in this current climate. How will they feel safe to report to the police, particularly the Met, after the incident discussed in this thread? I also could be wrong and correct me if I am, but I think that Jewish Women's Aid was the only domestic abuse charity that put out a statement condemning the Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel in October. Despite these being largely directed at women and included mass rapes. As someone who is not Jewish but with family experience of domestic abuse, this upset and horrified me. I don't know what I'd do if I was a Jewish DA victim. I doubt I'd trust the Met Police especially after this latest incident, and I don't know what to think about the domestic abuse charities either.

Happy to help. Here is a very interesting debate which explains it all, with 4 people putting their pov and facts forwards and a vote at the end. A bit long, but so worth listening to from beg to end.

BTW, may I point out that I am neither a Palestinian or a Muslim, nor an Israeli or a Jew. Or any other faith. And I have no direct interest in either side, just trying to understand how it happened and why. And even more importantly, where what will happen 'after' this terrible war ends.

Because at the moment, the conflict is at massive risk of escalating- and the next stage will not be about Israel, Jews, Muslims or Palestine. If Netanyahu causes the conflict to escalate, and with the massive proliferation of nuclear arms over the past 50+ years- we are all done for, wherever we stand.

Do people believe that one had to be German or a Jew, to see what was happening in Germany and Poland in the 30s and 40s, and to try and counter German and even French propaganda about Jews being baby eaters, and worse? Many closed their eyes when they knew- don't rock the boat, don't listen to left - just keep quiet. This is what many in my parents generation were told. The Daily Mail and much of the UK Press too.

For someone who claims neutraility you certainly seem to have bought into some pretty malefic conspiracy theories and denials...such as denying that the atrocities of October 7th even happened; using words such 'genocide' and so on.

I'm neither Jewish nor Israeli - and yes, I can see the blatant anti semitic undertones and even the outright blatant anti semitic rhetoric that is passing itself off as enlightened and/or informed debate.

The rising level of paranoia from her too at being asked about her views.

I'd say she is typical of many/most of the marchers.

She also propagates conspiracy thinking - that it was Israel that funded Hamas, or created them - because for these people Israel can only be bad; inherently bad, and without redeeming features. Zionism ( the state of Israel) is supposed to represent the epitome of everything the Left hates, and it can be allowed no credits

There is always a 'but'...to explain why Jews can't have a nation, where they aren't loathed and attacked. I'm sick of this:
France Jewish woman kidnapped
This is exactly why we support Israel and if they need me I'll fight and die for her.

The suspect, according to Le Parisien, sent text messages to the victim's mother and ex-boyfriend, telling the former partner that he wanted to "avenge Palestine."
“Good luck, you will never find your daughter again, you will never see her again, I will prostitute your daughter,” the suspect allegedly texted the victim's mother according to Le Parisien.

I've not seen anyone claiming to be anti semitic but anti zionist directly condemn any of this horrific violent shit. Instead it's a constant listing of what is wrong with Israel and whataboutery.

turbonerd · 24/04/2024 14:39

@datcherygrateful I try to be careful with my phrasing so use «most» and «many» to show that I don’t imply «all» in a region.

Am on phone, so massive blocks of text not possible.
No, no countries are a monolith.

@EdithStourton yes I agree, the British Empire didn’t cause schisms in the population, but they did know how to use it to their advantage. As all aggressors do, really.

It is very unique in that regard I agree.
but having an ethnoreligious state is a very unique thing too so I cannot make parallels or draw comparisons.

It is unique. No other state is exclusive in this way.

Israel is of course a legal state.
Its practices are not.

Quite simply anti Zionism is opposition to a Jewish state, i.e. Israel, even existing. How on earth can you state this does not inherently involve prejudice against Jewish people?

Well how can you explain that many Jews (Orthodox and Reform) claim contrary?
Zionism was opposed by many Jews in the 1800's and 1900's.

anti Zionism TODAY is anti politics of the state of Israel.

The reason a lot of European Jews opposed Zionism in the 1800s and 1900's was because they wanted to be included as full and equal citizens of the countries in which they were living. There had always been accusations of Jewish dual loyalty or disloyalty - whereby Jews were seen as being a community unto themsleves who had no affiliation or historic ties to the host societies. These sorts of sentiments ( wanting to be included as equal citizens) were also behind the early Communist thinking.

However, it never quite seemd to work out for them did it? Any sign of national stress or tension and the Jews would be packed off into ghettos, or forbidden from participating in certain occupations, forbidden from voting, not allowed free movement - that was right across Europe. It was no wonder the Zionist dream took off - or why it still persists.

It doesn't stop those ultra orthodox Jews from living in Israel, though, does it - nor claiming financial support from the state? The reason they oppose 'Zionism' (in principal though they benefit from it in practice) is because they believe that God will ordain when Zion is to be created, not mankind.
