Is "openly Jewish" a hate crime under the April Fools Scottish hate crime law?

A Metropolitan police officer threatened to arrest a man for being "Openly Jewish" in London. Is this a hate crime in Scotland under the new hate crime laws?

I think it is. Could someone report it for me please I find it incredibly offensive and racist. I want to see what happens when Scottish Police try to get involved with racist actions taken by the Metropolitan Police.

A man wearing a yarmulke is alleged to be provocative, particularly because he doesn't have it glued to his head 24/7.... but the march was not anti Jew?

Yeah right. My arse.

Yeah right. And my other question, care to answer?

BEing anti Netanyahu and his genocide and every intention, for over 40 years, to take overPalestinian land, is NOT anti-Jew. Which is why so many Jews feel just the same.

Saturday is Shabbat, if you were not formerly aware. This is the day when Jewish people go to the synagogue.

People in Muslim attire are a frequent sight on this demonstrations. Hijabs are very commonplace.

Your personal persepctive is not the same thing as truth or fact. Geniocide is a contesed term -woith along history. If Israel had really wanted to conduct a 'genocide' there would be no people left alive in Gaza at all - given Israel's military strength.

Genocide involves active intention to destroy a population for no other reason than hatred of that population. this is exactly what Hamas did on October 7th. It was not a miltary campaign - it was a campaign of terror - killing, beheading , rapoing , burning men women and children, and taking people hoistage.

These marches are no anti-Jewish, but anti Netanyahu and the IDF and their genocide in Palestine. And this started a long long time before October 7th!

Oh really?

And yet the officer in question felt that quite strongly that the presence of a man who was 'openly Jewish' was both a provocation and a risk.

Funny, that.

turbonerd · 22/04/2024 20:03

But what is this complete idiocy of being anti zionist I Wonder?
The state Israel was created by the UN in 1948. It was set up in the traditional jewish homelands where there already were jews living. The brits and the French «owned» this region after ww1 when they fought and won the Ottoman overlords. They fought with arabs from the area, but come on: The British and the French ruled the World at this point.
So the Israeli state is well established at this point in time. It cannot be undone. Except by massive bloodshed.

Lest we forget, the whole solid reason it was created as a nation state for jewish people in the first place was the Holocaust. How can people ignore this? It is so sad and unbelieveable.

In comparison, Ukraine gained their independence from Soviet/Russia in 1991. It had been a vassal state for centuries before that.

deragod · 22/04/2024 20:02

They are missing you at Middle Eastern Conflict Board.
But since you are so interested, but clearly not knowledgeable in the matter, go and figure out who sentenced Moshe Katsav (former president of Israel) for prison. Hint: Judge was an Israeli Arab, muslim. No one bat an eye.

Now, it is your time to explain, why do you omit pogrom at the 7th, and how this is relevant to British citizen being imitated at the streets of London? You can't have it both ways. 2/3 of young British Jews already think about immigration to Israel. As someone so opposite to existence of Jewish state you should do everything to make sure those people start to feel safe in the UK.

Edit: As tonight its beginning of Pesach you will see more kippahs on the street. Hopefully celebrations won't be too provocative.

Your prerogative. It is a fact that Jews, both in Israel and out, are very divided over this. Never mentionned 'good Jew/bad Jew. Some support Netanyahu and his genocide and wish to take over all Palestinian land. Others do not. Fact.

And this question 'I repat my question - would men dressed in 'Muslim/arabic' dress, be allowed to denounce Netanyahu and this war (not war at all, war has two sides) which is in fact a genocide.' ? I'd be truly interested in your answer. Does your version of freedom of speech and dress apply to all? Or not.

It's not the Sabbath and on the way back from Synagogue when he's doing the interview. Like some people might wear a relatively modest dress or suit, maybe a hat or cover their shoulders and décolleté for Mass but wear something less formal/more revealing on a Saturday or work day. Or a white thobe for Mosque on a Friday, but a suit and tie for work.

Happy to answer.

My point is, he does not wear the kippah in interviews

Many non-Orthodox Jews only wear it on a Saturday, usually when they've been to synagogue, i.e. the Sabbath.

You seem to forget that Israel is in the process of causing the most cruel and long planned genocide in Palestine.

You have no idea what I think about Israel so don't accuse me of forgetting anything. If you think what's happening in Gaza is justification for hostility and hatred towards Jews in London (or anywhere else for that matter) or goading Jews on Mumsnet, and that we should just be quiet about that because 'but Gaza', then there's a word for that.

Many Jews are openly condemning what Netanyahu and the IDF are doing right now, and have been doing for a very long time, since 1948, and even worse, since 1965.

I'm not interested in your grotesque good Jew/bad Jew pigeonholing, and as above, you have absolutely no idea what my views are on Israel (which incidentally will probably completely blow your mind, but I'm not obliged to 'make a statement' on that, nor denounce Israel).

I would have thought it was obvious. Provocation.

Even if he was returning from Synagogue, he knew 100% that the march was taking place and where- and would have been wise to avoid the area. The Policeman was totally right ot have concerns for his safety, and for all the right reasons.

He was t being ‘provocative’
He had the right to move about London as a Jew.
All the racists are coming out of the closet

lechiffre55 · 22/04/2024 19:20

@Hélène79
Exactly my point. He's not at risk because the protesters aren't anti Jewish, but also he is at risk from the protesters at the same time. Which is it?

In today's modern times I find the inability to make a consitent argument particularly telling about a person.

No-one is doubting that the officer was right to have concerns for his safety. That is just wilfully missing the point.

Why do you think an openly Jewish man unsafe at the protests if "These marches are no anti-Jewish"

And YET in your immediate post above you claim wearing a kippah is provocation:

"I would have thought it was obvious. Provocation".

A kippah signifies someone is Jewish (not pro or whatever Israeli), and you're suggesting wearing one is provocative. But you're also saying the marches aren't anti-Jewish! Which is it? You can't have it both ways.

Then it is pointless intimidating Jews in the UK.

If these people feel so strongly about this situation (which is bliddy horrible, admittedly), then let them do what so many British people did during the Spanish Civil War - go over there, join the Palestinian forces and fight for what they believe is right.

But they don't do that, because it is easier to virtue-signal by behaving as bullies and threatening people..

So if a Muslim man or group, in arab Islamic clothes go and go and stand outside a Synagogue to denounce Israel's current genocide in Palestine, the police would happily ignore them? Really?

Are you sure?

So what?

He may or may not have been being deliberately provocative, but so what?

He is entitled to be safe. He is entitled to wear what he likes. He is entitled to be a one-man counter protest with banners and placards if he chooses to do so.

He isn't breaking the law - the people who are threatening him are breaking the law. THEY are the ones who should be arrested.

If I march against Trump, would that make me anti American?

If I marched against the extreme right in Germany, neo-fascists, would that make me anti German?

Emotionalsupportviper · 22/04/2024 18:57

It really doesn't matter if he was, or wasn't though. He has a right to walk where he wants and to be kept safe in the face of an angry bigoted mob who might wish to attack him, for nothing more than just being Jewish and daring to be there.

This. ⬆

These demonstrations are not peaceful protests. They have become "demonstrations". There are violent elements there who are trying to whip up racial hatred. The trouble is that they have been allowed to become increasingly unruly, and increasingly large and now the police have no control over the way they behave.

It should never have got to this stage in the first place. The anti-Jewish elements should have been stopped as soon as they tried to start.

The police have lost control. They are afraid of the pro-Palestinians who threaten violence (and sometimes are violent) against Jews, they are afraid of trans-activists who threaten violence (and sometimes are violent) against women, they don't even attempt to apprehend criminals any more - they aren't for for purpose.

No-one in this country should have to worry about being targeted for any reason.
