Is "openly Jewish" a hate crime under the April Fools Scottish hate crime law?

A Metropolitan police officer threatened to arrest a man for being "Openly Jewish" in London. Is this a hate crime in Scotland under the new hate crime laws?

I think it is. Could someone report it for me please I find it incredibly offensive and racist. I want to see what happens when Scottish Police try to get involved with racist actions taken by the Metropolitan Police.

They are missing you at Middle Eastern Conflict Board.
But since you are so interested, but clearly not knowledgeable in the matter, go and figure out who sentenced Moshe Katsav (former president of Israel) for prison. Hint: Judge was an Israeli Arab, muslim. No one bat an eye.

Now, it is your time to explain, why do you omit pogrom at the 7th, and how this is relevant to British citizen being imitated at the streets of London? You can't have it both ways. 2/3 of young British Jews already think about immigration to Israel. As someone so opposite to existence of Jewish state you should do everything to make sure those people start to feel safe in the UK.

Edit: As tonight its beginning of Pesach you will see more kippahs on the street. Hopefully celebrations won't be too provocative.

This is very sad - Jewish Britons have brought so much to this nation. They are a huge asset to the country and we would all be impoverished if they left.

Judaism is the basis of my own Christian faith. It is the one that all tenets of our present-day morality is built on. I'm not saying that other countries didn't have similar laws (eg Hammurabi) but Judaism goes back much further. It is the original "do as you would be done by" with respect not only for human life but for animal welfare. We have all benefitted from its teachings and the 10 main commandments, even if we aren't Jews, and even if we have no faith of any type.

We were discussing hate crime . . . Not Netanyahu (whom I personally detest).

I know very little about him @Larklane , but a colleague that I respect a lot tld me he is power-hungry.

The whole situation both in Israel/ Palestine and here at home is too sad for words.

I honestly want ordinary Palestinians to be spared the horror they are experiencing now, and I feel frustrated and upset over the occupation and ongoing struggle between Israel and Palestine - but I'm also horrified at the level of Anti-Semitism unleashed by this conflict, this is disguising and awful - from close friend suddenly saying "Israel made up the October 7th rapes, Jews are known for lying" to this, a guy apparently being told by the MET! he cant be "openly Jewish"... Fucking hell, I would react the same way if Muslims were treated as Jews are treated now, it really scares me to imagine Hitler smiling in his grave... where are we going with all this, how soon it will be ok to kill someone because they are of "inferior" religion/ affiliation?

Saturday is Shabbat, if you were not formerly aware. This is the day when Jewish people go to the synagogue.

People in Muslim attire are a frequent sight on this demonstrations. Hijabs are very commonplace.

Your personal persepctive is not the same thing as truth or fact. Geniocide is a contesed term -woith along history. If Israel had really wanted to conduct a 'genocide' there would be no people left alive in Gaza at all - given Israel's military strength.

Genocide involves active intention to destroy a population for no other reason than hatred of that population. this is exactly what Hamas did on October 7th. It was not a miltary campaign - it was a campaign of terror - killing, beheading , rapoing , burning men women and children, and taking people hoistage.

Edited

And I am sure there are still Jewish women and children being kept prisoner by Hamas. God knows what they are going through every day.

Should Isreal forget them?

If Hamas had launched similar attack in the UK do you think that our government would have let it go unanswered? Butchery and rape of innocent unarmed people?

Israel doesn't want to continue with this war. Hamas provoked it and are the only ones benefitting from it.

I feel so sorry for the civilians of Gaza - but I feel sorry for the Israeli citizens who have been brutalised, too. I wish there was a simple way of ending it, but I can't.

  • Yep that's exactly how it works, when you post in all caps that proves you are right. Using the word fact makes it double true. That's exactly how it works.....

😁my thoughts exactly

very poor choice of words by the officer concerned.

would reccommend everyone watch the full video rather than the short clip though...

@EsmaCannonball
but let's not pretend that doesn't slap an even bigger target on the back of every Jewish person who is not on the march.

Yes!

EsmaCannonball · 22/04/2024 21:15

The policing of these protests has been dire. We're lectured about the right to peaceful protest while the police are proceeding on the basis that a riot or a lynching is about to kick off. Worse, they think the just way to deal with that is to bully any unfortunate Jewish person, Iranian, poppy-seller or counter-protestor who might be a candidate for a beating into getting off the street. We've seen multiple examples of the police threatening actually peaceful people 'for their own good' and multiple incidents of the marchers harassing and intimidating anyone who attracts their ire (sometimes just for existing). How peaceful is a protest when the police are in a constant flop-sweat of panic trying to stamp out these fires? And, yes, there are Jewish people on these marches and they have the right to be there, but let's not pretend that doesn't slap an even bigger target on the back of every Jewish person who is not on the march.

lechiffre55 · 22/04/2024 21:14

It's my understanding that the state of Isreal has a very long memory when it comes to those who have harmed or would do harm to Israel and Israelis. They are very busy with Hamas and the other big fish of the region right now. But it will be interesting to see what happens in the future when things are a lot quieter and they turn their attention to the smaller fish.
They have some notable cock ups under their belt, but in general they tend to be very good at that kind of stuff, and I don't imagine they will be in a very forgiving mood for a very long time to come. Perhaps just leave them alone, and they will leave you alone.

'People in Muslim attire are a frequent sight on this demonstrations. Hijabs are very commonplace.' and your point is?

Would they be allowed outside a Jewish school or Synagogue? You know very well that the clear answer is NO.

I most certainly do not know that, please educate me; do you have any evidence of women in hijabs being threatened, abused or told to move away from Jewish schools or synagogues. Extra points if it's the police telling them it's because they're "outwardly muslim".

This is what we have to deal with; self-righteous vicious anti-semitic twats. Sure, those Israeli women raped themselves.
This person would be first in line to herd me off to the concentration camp, just like the Germans who wiped out my grandfather's family.

And filmed themselves doing it and posted the footage to hamas' own social media feeds. Sneaky.

But what is this complete idiocy of being anti zionist I Wonder?
The state Israel was created by the UN in 1948. It was set up in the traditional jewish homelands where there already were jews living. The brits and the French «owned» this region after ww1 when they fought and won the Ottoman overlords. They fought with arabs from the area, but come on: The British and the French ruled the World at this point.
So the Israeli state is well established at this point in time. It cannot be undone. Except by massive bloodshed.

Lest we forget, the whole solid reason it was created as a nation state for jewish people in the first place was the Holocaust. How can people ignore this? It is so sad and unbelieveable.

In comparison, Ukraine gained their independence from Soviet/Russia in 1991. It had been a vassal state for centuries before that.

Edited

This!

I can’t phathom the arrogance of fools who have decided a LEGALLY recognised state, in existence long before they were even born probably, should not exist. Of course saying Israel shouldn’t exist is anti semetic. It’s the only Jewish state to exist. You could say the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand should not exist either.

Imagine a non Muslim saying Islamic states should not exist. Would that not be Islamophobic?

We were discussing hate crime, and went on to discuss the rise in anti semitism. Not Netanyahu (whom I personally detest) fungipie.

Read the OP again for the context of the discussion.

Shouting "scum" and other insults at an English citizen as you march past, whatever his reason for being there, strikes me and many other people as Jew hate. In the same way that Manchester schoolgirls, are having "Yid" shouted at them each day as they go to and from their education.

To keep things brief, before you contine with the whataboutery, I've been in physical fear in the recent past for defending a young muslim woman with a baby in a pram being taunted to go back where she came from.

Everyone should be able to go about their daily lives without being in fear of verbal or physical abuse from others, particularly those made brave in a mob.

A wider discussion about Israel/Gaza is on another board. I'll go there if I've something to say on that.

You may not want to read it all as need to pay but it does state that Jewish people were escorted away for their own safety not that Palestinian protesters were threatened with arrest for being in the area. Police were seeking those with Hamas headbands and blatant anti semetic placards afterwards though.

Did I mention 'left-wing'

and what is your point. Being anti Zionism is not being antisemitic.

Any Jew who believes that the land of Israel was empty, and belong to them in its entirity, because that is written in the book- are par-taking in this genocidal war- which began far far before october 7th. Constant and illegal occupation, lad grabs, persecution, akin to apartheid, has been going on for such a long time.

Please tell me what will happen to Palestine when the war ends. Do you believe in a two-State solution?

I disagree! I suggest you go away and do some research on the origins of anti semtism and the ways it has manifested over the centuries.

fungipie · 22/04/2024 20:16

You do know most of those allegations have been proven to be pure lies and propaganda, I hope.

Netanyahu has been waiting for this 'opportunity' for over 40 years- and it has been planned, for a very long time. And has been happening, bit by bit, in the cruelest and most disgusting of ways, since 1948, way before Netanyahu.

Wow! You are serious? You simply cannot stand the cognitive dissonance of the reality of what actually happend on October 7th.

You can only cope with the reality of Palestinian children being killed, but not Jewish children being tied together before being set alight - on purpose -and for social media posts.

Zealotry can make one blind to the truth, as we see so often with trans activism.

Don't be ridiculous! I live in a constituency which has multiple religious buildings: temple, churches, mosque and synagogue and people "walk past" them wearing their traditional and/or religious attire all of the time. What planet do you live on? We live in a multi-cultural society in which tolerance is to be expected.

RebelliousCow · 22/04/2024 20:26

fungipie · 22/04/2024 20:13

Yeah right. And my other question, care to answer?

BEing anti Netanyahu and his genocide and every intention, for over 40 years, to take overPalestinian land, is NOT anti-Jew. Which is why so many Jews feel just the same.

Your use of Left wing Jews is not a get out clause for anti semitic rhetoric. There is a long history, going back to Stalin, in which Left wing Jews have had to denounce Zionism to be deemed acceptable in Left wing circles. The Jews that prioritised their Jewish identity over their identity as 'International Socialists/Communists were never to be forgiven by Stalin. It brought out age old anti semitic sentiments that the Jews wete duplicitous and loyal only to themselves.

Most Jewish people have Zionist sympathies -just as most Muslims, clearly, feel some kind of loyalty to their bretheren in other countries; why else would so many British Muslims be so enraged about a war going on in the Middle East? However, let's not forget that there are Iranian-Muslim dissidents in Britain, and in Iran, who have every sympathy with Israel in its war against Iranian sponsored terrorism.
