This talk show might be of interest to French speaking MNetters, sorry can't find English subtitles.
Paris's virtue signalling seems to have backfired.

Has there ever been an example anywhere in history of a book burning being carried out and it turned out to be the rational, correct thing to do? Mass bonfire of Mein Kampf and other propaganda after WW2 maybe?

Otherwise it seems to me the performative, protesting type of book burning automatically categorises the pyromaniacs as intolerant, ignorant bigots who cannot stand to be challenged, and their instinctive reaction is to destroy rather than engage.

The thing is with book burning, is not only do they have to buy the book to burn it. Meaning Dora and Marguerite get benefit.

However, if I see that books are being burnt, I want to see why they are being burnt. I want to know all about the book.

Plus in this day and age it is rather environmentally irresponsible.

True, it is an incredibly dumb tactic in many ways. Note the only people who tend to do it are religious and political fanatics.

Excellent points @Helleofabore !

Book burning reminds me of a particular regime, which started about 90 years ago.

Threatening women, burning books and defacing monuments to babies.

No-one can deny that this ideology is a magnet for the absolute worst of humanity.

The TRAs are now doing book burnings and filming it.

I so wish I’d studied French 🇫🇷 😕

The authors are now receiving death threats, a depressingly familiar pattern.

Interesting from the Mail. I'd not describe death threats as heckling. They're not usually so coy!

Dora was interviewed on Andrew Doyle’s Free Speech Nation last night and it was very informative because they both knew the topic so well.

FrancescaContini · 12/05/2024 08:17

This looks excellent - thanks for sharing your hard work, @MyPearlViper

I do hope the book finds a publisher for an English edition (I would not have enough French to read the original).

334bu · 29/04/2024 18:13

Also a best seller in FNAC despite sales staff resistance.

Was their failure to find an English publisher before or after the book got to number 1 in France? If it was before they might well be giving it another go.

MyPearlViper · 29/04/2024 07:12

Thanks, I did do some research and they can't find an English language publisher willing to take it on, apparently. Imagine that!

So my plan is: circulate the first 1/10th of the book, and hope someone will read it and be bold enough to publish. My translation or someone else's.

But if a lawyer wants me to take it down, I will, of course

Edited

My suggestion is you continue with a chapter or two and then see if Swift Press is interested.

They published Time to Think by Hannah Barnes / When Kids Say They’re Trans / Gay Shame by Gareth Roberts / Irreversible Damage

Very much their kind of thing. Be good to get it in the shops.

Oh, well in that case, I'm
looking forward to each instalment! And thanks so much. I doubt any lawyer will be on to you if you have the publisher's permission. I'd still give Mumsnet a heads up, though.

Forgot to tag @MyPearlViper in the post above.

Snowypeaks · 29/04/2024 06:42

Very public spirited of you!

You should probably check with the publisher first, because you might be infringing copyright (and causing problems for Mumsnet) or contravening the law in some other way. Or just messing up the publisher's plans for translation.

MyPearlViper · 29/04/2024 06:36

I have started translating it.

This is only the first 35 pages of a 350 page book, but I'll keep going.

(I'm doing it as a labour of love, if anyone is in touch with Marguerite or Dora or their publishers, I want to be very clear that I'm not looking for money for this!)
