Miriam Cates was due to speak at the NatCon conference in Brussels tomorrow, on the topic of "Save The Children!"
The conference has been shut down because the Mayor will not tolerate the far right.

Here is a tweet to GB news discussing why the conference was shut down:

I'm putting this here because I know a lot of GC feminists support Cates - I don't, and this stuff is why. She is awful.

@MrsOvertonsWindow

Sorry but this is playground level analysis. Taking a look at a twitter post doesn't convert into helping a political party. As for arguing that "if you agree with one or two things she says, it is likely you'll agree with others" 😂

How doesn't it help the Tories? Do you understand algorithms? The amount of work the goes into the programming and coding behind the scenes is staggering. Everything is linked.

And, yes, of course if you agree on one issue, you are likely to agree on others. This is how politics, and political parties, work. You don't have to agree on everything - that would be rare - but in general, you would find you're in harmony.

Agreeing with you stating what time it is or that the sky is blue and sea is wet does not equate to me agreeing with any other of your beliefs or statements.

The level of debate on this thread is at times sadly lacking.

Honestly, this tired line of 'You're all right wing bigots really, you're just pretending to be frustrated (wannabe / ex-)Labour voters' is pathetic.

Is it really only 'permitted' to disagree with absolutely everything Tory MPs say, even if they occasionally say things which are sensible / correct? That's a fucking bonkers way of living life.

Underthinker · 18/04/2024 08:52

I'm guessing someone once tutted at @JessS1990 for feeding a toddler chips? So therefore no one should ever care about or intervene in a any way with other people's kids. And I definitely shouldn't have stopped a toddler from rolling into a busy road a couple of years back.

RebelliousCow · 18/04/2024 08:41

JessS1990 · 18/04/2024 08:37

Feeding an 18month old chips for lunch. (regularly I might add).

No, I wouldn't. Child abuse would be force feeding or not feeding at all.
Chips are just potatoes....no great harm in them...even if not ideal as a regular meal. Lots of small children are fussy eaters and can get fixated on eating only one type of thing all the time. And if that is what the parents chooses to eat themselves, no doubt they will offer it to their child too.

Let's split hairs to pretend the title of that speech wasn't incredibly anti-muslim and also right wing!

Nope, nothing to see here.

Is "Splitting hairs" the term you are using for being factually correct and able to differentiate?

JessS1990 · 18/04/2024 08:37

RebelliousCow · 18/04/2024 08:36

About what?

Being able to differentiate between one type of thing and another is a very useful skill.

I object to it because:

  1. like 37% of people in this country, I am no religion and my kids are fine. As are most peoples. Also a strange thing to say at a conference where there was a session about "Florence Bergeaud-Blackler, Is Europe Really Aware of the Endogenous Islamist Threat?" Almost like she means one particular kind of faith but didn't want to explicitly say that because she knew it would go down badly

  2. There is not statistically strong evidence that children from married families "flourish" and most people who get divorced don't do it for the lolz. There is however evidence that women and children in abusive households are traumatised and harmed by that. Which is the opposite of "flourishing".

  3. the only thing on her list thats actually proven to make a difference is "material resources" AKA not living in poverty. Since the Conservatives came in children living in poverty in this country has gone up hugely - I would love it if she did something about that but she doesn't GAF. If she did she couldn't be a member of this government.

Mainly I dislike her because she has far right associations and says far right things.

Islam is a religion, Islamism is a political ideology.

AlisonDonut · 18/04/2024 08:11

Miriam Cates was voted in using a democratic process.

Twix algorithms are not a democratic process and everyone has the right to look at whatever account they want to.

If you allow algorithms to control you and your behaviour, you are part of the problem, not the solution.

If you had of seen my dd when she was 18months old eating chips and mayonnaise for her lunch whilst we were out at a restaurant would you similarly have had words with me?

Don't be stupid!

I just read about the conference being closed down and was shocked actually”

Why do you find it shocking that right wing extremists were closed down?
**
They are mainstream Conservative figures from across Europe. They are not illegitimate terrorist organisations.
**
Are you aware of what totalitarianism means and how it operates?.

They were mainstream.
Yes, thank you.

Ive heard this excuse trotted out frequentły. Itʼs a craven cop-out. The trouble is if you are visiting her X timełine (or similar) youʼre boosting her algorithm and ałtering your own algorithm. Ergo, you are helping the Tories. It makes no difference if you don't directly vote for her.

It is rare for a politician to stray from the party line, either; so if you agree with one or two things she says, it is likely you'll agree with others. I'm sure you're intelligent enough not to be a single-issue voter, though.

"I'm putting this here because I know a lot of GC feminists support Cates"

FWIW. most posters on here are adult women and have the level of intelligence to agree with some points that a politician makes while disagreeing with other points. There are a small number of posters who have difficulties with these fundamental concepts about democracy.

If I were Sunak I'd want to know why Cates and Braverman weren't in Parliament doing their jobs.

Were they locked in a flat with "bad people"?

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 18/04/2024 01:52

Sigh.

I term myself as a centre left sort but when it comes to GC politicians, the ideology has a pan-political pushback.

Miriam Cates, Kemi Badonoch, Rosie Duffield and Tonia Antoniazzi come from both sides of the Chamber and whilst a lot of what they stand for, I don't, I do agree with their stance of women's rights.

I'm no political zealot. I don't hate any politician just because they are NatCon or Socialist or whatever else. I don't hate them because they belong to a particular political party. I disagree with Labour and strongly disagree with the Tories.

I don't think anyone should be denied the right to speak. I don't think any event should be closed down because someone or some people disagree with what might be discussed there. I don't agree with comedy, music or theatre productions being cancelled because some people find the person featured in it reprehensible. That is very wrong.

If you don't like something, you don't have to engage with it. You can ignore it. I would have paid this conference no attention. Now it's been cancelled, how can anyone not have an opinion? It's been all over the media!

ilovesooty · 18/04/2024 00:17

AdamRyan · 17/04/2024 07:22

I judge people by what they say and do. Because a lot of politicians say a lot, and do very little. Sometimes they say contradictory things or even outright lie (looking at you Boris).

Miriam Cates says and does a lot of stuff I find objectionable. Choosing to speak at a far right conference would be one of those actions.

Others can feel free to support her, I just think knowledge is power and this board doesn't give a particularly balanced view of her.

If I were Sunak I'd be asking both her and Braverman what they think they are playing at. He won't though because he has no authority left.

If I were Sunak I'd want to know why Cates and Braverman weren't in Parliament doing their jobs.

Quite. I don't want anyone else deciding what's best for my kids. She can be quite judgy:
Parents who have sufficient material resources, are married, and raise their children in a faith community are all statistically more likely to raise flourishing children

I’m grateful to have been brought up with the benefit of all three of those statistically helpful and stable factors. I had friends in care who came from dysfunctional families in poverty. I think they would have been hugely helped if someone had done a better job of looking after them as children, whether through adoption, a charity, or the state.

If you’ve only seen kids in functional families, maybe you don’t see how much some of them need support from a much wider community than their frankly useless parents. This is not to blame the parents necessarily; parenting is hard for many of us, and some parents have been dealt an awful hand in life. SureStart was a decent attempt to support parents. I don’t know whether Miriam Cates agrees. I do know that her father was a GP in a practice which provided medical care for a lot of homeless and otherwise disadvantaged people.

@JessS1990 I don’t think Cates, or many on this board, have strong opinions on mayo. You know the "con" in "natcon" doesn't stand for condiments right?

Con is an accurate description of them.
