The Harry Potter author responded: "Not safe, I'm afraid.
"Celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women's hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies for traumatised detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single sex spaces."

I read that as JKR saying that no apology should come her way but should be directed towards the minors, detransitioners, and vulnerable women who live with the consequences of celebs' luxury beliefs.

Irrespective of the views involved, I can't agree on principle that Radcliffe and Watson should be obliged to stand by/defend JKR on the strength of the HP films starting their acting careers.

If it were the other way round - if JKR were a TWAW advocate and Radcliffe and Watson were gender-critical - would you be on here criticising them for not standing by her?

I don't think anybody thinks they should be obliged - I certainly don't. What I DO think is that, given how long they had known her, and what they knew of her character, should have made them at least wonder - 'why does she think that?'. Maybe even have a conversation. Instead, they jumped straight to public condemnation and attack.

Particularly with Watson, there was a whiff of bandwagon-jumping - I never felt there was any sincerity in her TWAW pronouncements, it was all a bit performative in my opinion - the fawning over Paris Lees being a good example. Radcliffe was coming from the position of being entwined with, and schooled by, a trans-cheerleading charity. I felt he was more sincere in his belief, but still find the lack of any sanity-check in his thinking (is this really a good idea?) contemptible. In our society, celebs have too much influence. Children in particular are swayed by what they do/say/wear. That alone, plus the extra influence they had as 'Harry' and 'Hermione' should have nudged them into exercising their influence more cautiously. Instead they went for broke.

The strangest thing about this article appears to be that neither Emma or Daniel have actually offered an apology to anyone, let alone JK.

Exactly, it's all built on JK's 'not safe'. Which could actually mean a variety of things. From 'never' to 'with a heartfelt sincere apology, yes' and everything in-between.

TBH I think the pair of them would struggle to apologise anyway. Some behaviour cannot be apologised away, and some people cannot see their way back even if the Golden Bridge is right in front of them.

I think people are underestimating how quickly people can be dropped by casting directors of their face doesn’t fit anymore.

Someone said they “haven’t exactly been getting plum roles,” which doesn’t square with Radcliffe being nominated for an Emmy last year. I don’t know what’s behind Watson’s current hiatus from acting, but she was doing okay for herself in terms of being able to get roles. “Little Women” was very well-reviewed and was nominated for Best Picture. I thought she was horribly miscast, but she was cast.

Did Rowling make them famous? Yes. Are they currently superstars? No. Are they washed-up has-beens working in the dregs of the acting profession? Also no. Are they smug, wrong about trans issues, and did they behave heinously towards Rowling? Definitely.

HullaBallu · 13/04/2024 15:18

Actors negotiate repeat fees as part of their contracts - even a minor Hogwarts student in all seven of the Harry Potter franchise will be getting decent annual cheques for some time.

GrimDamnFanjo · 13/04/2024 14:09

I for one cannot wait for the tv series and the recasting of the characters.

Jesus that clip above. Emma love -

It's fuck all to do with fearing what I don't know. A biological man claims he feels like a woman and I'm supposed to just accept that and key him into my space? Not happening. He wouldn't even dream of this but what's the difference between a TW and my lovely DH doing this? How can we make the distinction? Because otherwise we may as well do away with sex segregated spaces altogether. And that's going to obviously end well.

And "go and have a chat, look into the whites of that persons eyes understand what their experience feels like". You mean the experience of thinking they are just like me? Again no thanks and no need. Why is the onus always on women to do this understanding? What can't TW do the leg work and understand what its really like to be a woman?

And always with that doe eyes faux sadness at the injustice of it all.

I think people are underestimating how quickly people can be dropped by casting directors of their face doesn’t fit anymore.

And yet Radcliffe and Watson would both have earned more in their careers at that point than some of the other HP stars who didn't do what they did.

Just had a quick look at his IMDB listing, he's certainly not been short of work so he must be doing something right. I quite like the look of 'Miracle Workers', but not enough to take Amazon Prime. 'The Lost City' was on TV a few days ago, he was all right in it (luffs me a Sandra Bullock film!).

Still a twat for the TWAW stance.

Edited

First series of miracle workers was really charming and worth a watch - Geraldine Viswanathan is a fantastic comedic actor so her being in something is an instant recommendation.

The remaining series are a bit of a flop compared to S1 (because the S1 premise was so strong and the rest are just blah).

I think some people here are understating Radcliffe’s post-Potter career a bit too much. He just got nominated for an Emmy last year, so it’s not like he’s all washed up. (I don’t know if he deserved an Emmy nomination because I didn’t see the performance, but it’s industry recognition.)

NGL, I kinda love Slytherin House turned out in support of JK - maybe playing the baddies made them less afraid of being accused of being baddies in real life?

I’ve loved Ralph Fiennes since The English Patient. Being reminded of how decent he is always pleases me.

I’ve fallen down a (real) Weird Al YouTube hole! An interesting/weird role for DR to take on (although not nearly as interesting/weird as Michael Fassbender playing Frank Sidebottom).

I looked it up, came out via a streaming service I’ve never heard of before this evening. No cinema release.

The Weird Al Yankovich film? I don’t think that got much of a U.K. release?

At least, I didn’t notice anything much about it, and I’ve seen actual Weird Al play live 3 times.

My daughter was so excited to see Emma supporting women’s rights. Unfortunately my daughter backs sucked into the trans thing and is now no contact and may well be taking testosterone , who knows.
Thanks Emma. Way to go for women’s rights.

this actually made us feel ill.
