But Rosie Duffield, a Labour MP placed under investigation by the party last year for campaigning against gender ideology, pointed out that women who had exposed the scandal had been “blanked, sidelined and dismissed” by male leaders simply for speaking up.

And feminist Julie Bindel demanded an apology from Mr Streeting for failing to support her gender-critical views when he was president of the National Union of Students.

In reply to Ms Bindel’s accusation, Mr Streeting replied: “From memory (16 years on, so correct me if I’m wrong!) I replied to confirm that you weren’t on NUS’ no platform policy and as this was in relation to a motion passed by the autonomous women’s campaign I was not empowered to overturn it (not least as a male president!).”

This prompted Ms Duffield to retweet the (Les Streeting) statement, with the message: “To the many women blanked, sidelined, dismissed by male leaders when speaking up and exposing this for years.”

And Ms Bindel wrote: “Glad to see you are now openly critical of the gender ideology that led to the atrocities against children outlined in the Cass report.

“I am open to accepting an apology from you. In 2008, when you were NUS president, I was no-platformed alongside five fascist groups for ‘transphobia’.

“I contacted you and asked for your help. You gave none. I asked you to condemn those that had orchestrated the no-platforming, and you refused.

“Have you any idea of the reputational damage this caused me? How it gave others permission to no-platform, denounce and defame me?
“How it meant that I could be slandered by other organisations, and so many, many universities around the UK and elsewhere? If this sounds bitter then good, because I am.”

To this message, Ms Duffield said: “Thank you for leading us all here Julie. Without you, most of us wouldn’t have had a clue what had been happening to children who were far too young to have the critical faculties or agency to consent.”

I had a good but unproductive discussion with a Labour canvasser last week. I told her I'd voted Labour all my life but that, as things stand, would be unlikely to do so again because of their stance on gender ideology and their attitude to anyone who disagrees.

She listened and was respectful, regretful. even sympathetic, but had nothing to offer to reassure me we were going to get anything further than we're getting now.

Oh and she said it had come up a number of times on doorsteps.

It was before Cass came out which is a shame.

I had an almost identical experience with the Labour canvasser who knocked on our door.

You are so right, even this page has been so much more of an interesting and informative read. Don’t wrestle with pigs etc.
Cold shoulders forward.

pickledandpuzzled · 14/04/2024 07:42

Women first, party politics second well actually a hell of a long way down!

NoWordForFluffy · 13/04/2024 22:49

Cold shoulder from me going forward.

In the absence of a block poster function, me too.

Otter2 · 13/04/2024 21:58

It's also worth remembering as a general point (not relating to any particular poster) that if someone's posts have a continued anti woman bias, relentlessly criticise other women for amongst other things wrong think, repeatedly describe views and women as right wing bigots etc, then those posters are likely not the women, feminists, mothers, sisters etc that they claim to be (as Mumsnet likes to remind us)

Very much this, yes. And I DO have a poster in mind.

Cold shoulder from me going forward.

IwantToRetire · 13/04/2024 21:44

Its partly all the time and energy. Even if I have not seen a thread for a day I will take the time to read through, and maybe for those responding it real time it makes sense, but reading through you just think please let it stop.

This is going to be yet another thread that might have reflected developments, thoughts from Labour supporters, but will in fact be like getting lost in a bad dream that you cant wake yourself up out of.

In terms of these "diaogues" who is getting greated satisfaction, those replying whilst thinking it is like hitting your head against a brick wall, or the person who gets the thrill of knowing someone has fallen for the ploy.

Could we form a cold shoulder coalition?

If it quacks like a duck and all that..😂

But this is a very busy board and it's inevitable that with so many posters, people sometimes get triggered by bias and want to wade in.

🙈🤣🤣🤣

You can see the fear in their eyes. It's most amusing.

My house is probably blacklisted now, sadly, so I won't get to do it again. 😩

Indeed - I expect both the lib dums and labour have put a big Terf sticker on my address.

NoWordForFluffy · 13/04/2024 21:21

Maybe the problem is that too many women are still operating under the sexist notion that women have to be polite, engage and respond to someone who is constantly bothering them.

If I'd said what I really thought, I'd have been deleted and likely banned!

And I seemingly can't help myself when there is so much wrong in posts. 😳

IwantToRetire · 13/04/2024 20:11

This is about Sadiq Khan's policy on single sex refuges in London. The article is two years old however so perhaps he's changed his policies since then?

Also from what I understand from friends in London, VAWG services have been quite significantly cut back since the mayor was elected?

Obvioulsy I am not supporting Khan, but all he is repeating is the Labour Party mantra which has always avoided saying that women are entitled to single sex services (and are in fact legally entitled to them). He is such a party hack I would expect him to in any way step out of line!

I dont think the Mayor has any funding options for DV or RC services, they are all funded through different post of money. He just gives little hand outs to media friendly groups who are "helping the community".

re Joan Smith, I think she was treated appallingly, and again pretty much in line with how Labour sidelines or even eject women who dare to have independent thoughts.

But it has to be said many were astonished that she was appointed to the post in the first place as she doesn't have a background or any real knowledge of the work of the VAWG sector.

And like a lot of women who may have contributed to feminism via writing often has a theoretical approach rather than evidence based.

Dont forget she was one of the "prominent" ie journalists knew her name, who helped scupper the plans to include women (sex) under the hate crime laws, but some well known (as names) women started campaigning for it to be included because it wouldn't lead to any improvement. Whereas the majority of women at the grass roots wanted it included because it confirms that women have equal status.

And it was noticeably when the new Scottish Hate Crime Laws came into forcs SNP ministers were able to point with smug satisfaction that "professional" feminists had said hate based crime in relation to someones sex shouldn't be included.

Dodds last year in the Grauniad:

The Gender Recognition Act was passed by Labour in 2004 but Dodds said that “now, in 2023, we have a much better understanding of the barriers trans people face”. She pointed to the legislation passed by Tony Blair’s government, and the 2010 Equality Act under Gordon Brown, as among Labour’s “crowning achievements”

Edited

But my point is, it's not like it was even original or innovative. They did the same thing everyone else was doing, roughly when everyone else was doing it, and it turns out it was a bad idea everywhere.

I'm a traditional Labour supporter. Up until a few years ago, save for a bit of tactical voting, I had voted Labour in every national and local election. However, to suggest that they aren't worse than the Tories on this is bizarre. Yes, the problems of the last few years have happened on the Tories' watch, but this is more to do with their hands-off approach to involvement in both public and private services - including moving the public to the private, which inevitably gives governments less direct influence.

At the same time senior Labour politicians have called relatively mild groups such as WPUK 'hate groups', barred such groups from official conferences, passed multiple motions at a local level up chastising GC orgs, sought to expel GC women from the party etc, etc. Yes they are now shifting, very slowly, and I'm glad, but they're not there yet as recent statements from all over the party in response to Cass make clear.

I completely understand why people are sceptical at best at what they would do in power.

I haven't read the full thread so sorry if this has already been mentioned but if London is an indication of what things will like under a Labour government it doesn't inspire much confidence for the protection of the most vulnerable women.

Has KS actually said anything about Cass? Adam has convinced me KS is gutless as well as powerless.

https://reaction.life/cass-made-streeting-backtrack-but-where-is-starmer/
But the party is still planning to reform the Gender Recognition Act to make social transitioning easier, something the Cass review warns against. How seriously does the Labour leader regard women’s rights and the safeguarding of girls? We need to know before we go to the polls because there are senior members of Starmer’s team who remain transgender zealots.

I've not seen anything which is interesting. Although Sunak doesn't seem to have said much either bar a small quote I saw in a Times article. Both seem to be letting their Health Secretaries battle it out. Perhaps that's a strategic decision as at the heart of it is a medical scandal.

Our Labour council went so far as to pass a motion that TWAW and TMAM the other year! Idiots.

If it were true, they wouldn't need to pass a motion saying it.

GailBlancheViola · 13/04/2024 13:59

I agree it is a nonsensical piece of legislation @MissScarletInTheBallroom, however, the current crop of Labour MPs laud it to the skies and state how proud they are that a Labour Party put it on the Statute Books. I make that point to show how very, very, very, unlikely it is that the current Labour Party will do anything to mitigate the adverse impact it has had and continues to have on women, on the contrary they are talking about making it even easier to obtain a GRC. And they won't touch the EqA either they have said so all they mutter about is safe spaces for women ones that will no doubt include the special men version of women with their shiny, easily obtained piece of paper that no-one can ask about.
