Have written to my MSPs linking to the report. And telling them that they cannot claim not to have known and they must now step up for the children of Scotland, do their job and protect them.

Thank you Dr Cass, and thank you Mumsnetters. I’ve been reading these boards for years and have been deeply impressed by the diligence, attention to detail and grasp of the issues that some posters have. Let’s hope this helps to protect children and open the eyes of those who have swallowed this ideology whole. It’s absolutely shocking how it’s managed to get such a stranglehold on power and influence. It’s taken such courage for people to say no, and I hope those whose livelihoods and relationships have been destroyed for resisting can take some comfort from the report.

One thing that worries me about Cass: Lastly, the evidence base showing whether psychosocial interventions – therapy – work for those who do not undergo hormone treatment is “as weak” as for puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones.

I assume this means therapy not to affirm their ideas about being the opposite sex, but to help them come to terms with their own sex and their body and place in society etc. Does this mean it's likely that therapy isn't effective? Or just that there isn't (yet) enough data?

My reading donor is that there isn't enough data (if any at all) AND read alongside the statements that other known conditions that required psycho therapy support were negated in favour of referring to Gids.

So if you haven't tried to diagnose and provide care for known underlying conditions such as ASD, depression, anxiety then there is no evidence as to whether therapy on its own for gender incongruence can be helpful.

Because most if not all patients don't just have gender incongruence as an isolated diagnosis.

Transactual seems to be claiming that “evidence was discarded” (no, not by GIDS, sillies!), without specifying further. Not holding my breath.

I saw tweets about the ‘disregarded’ evidence last night. It comes down to the fact that they don’t think the evidence can ever reach the high quality mark and that it is an unreasonable burden.

I found myself on the feminism board when searching for help with my young teen daughter. She's now 19 and diagnosed with Autism. Back then she had been saying she felt she didn't want to be a girl, she didn't want to grow up, was self harming, having anxiety attacks. She spoke of many labels - pansexual, Non Binary, Arorace. All terms I was unaware of and had to search for. I naively thought it was the latest teenage fad but could see how unhappy she was and we were fortunate she was referred to CAMHS and eventually received her diagnosis. From there I was able to get her support and better understand her needs. I ignorantly had not linked her experience to the Feminism aspect and it was through searching I found myself here. I had been a mumsnet member going back to the baby stage but rarely entered the feminism topics. It was through reading the measured and informative posts from so many wonderful women here that I began to understand. It was thanks in part to Mumsnet that we didn't go along with her requests to change pronouns or supply her with binders. She hated periods and often said she wanted to remove her uterus and breasts. She was crying out to tell me it was the unwanted attention from boys and men that she was afraid of and was not ready to grow up. Even now at 19 she is very socially immature. She has online friends/relationships but has never been close to anyone in the real world. She is still finding herself but now accepts her biological sex. It's still a subject that I have to tiptoe around her as she sees any criticism of gender ideology as an attack on the trans community. She has many online friends who are unhappy and confused. I was very pleased to read the recommendation in the report to raise the age to 25. Certainly with my daughter I would say her emotional and social maturity is that of a 14 year old. She's at Uni loving her course but living at home with us. My hope for her is that she will eventually live her life happy and independent. Whether this is as a contented single woman or in a loving relationship gay or straight we can only wait. I'm just so so glad we didn't go along with her wishes years back and I hope she can see this now too. Mumsnet has played a massive role in supporting us and today seeing the CASS report published is such a huge step towards really understanding the harms that this toxic ideology has caused to children and young people.

That's brilliant @mrshoho

Thank goodness you were careful, diligent in your research, firm in protecting your daughter. Well done. Give yourself a massive slap on the back today. Star
Very relieved for you and your daughter. Hopefully she will continue to develop independence and live her best life.

Helleofabore · 10/04/2024 10:08

Let’s face it. The same posters who scold us for having the discussions, for not posting in a way that they personally prefer to read (making the content thereby not worthy of engagement), are going to scold us whatever we do. They will always scold us and never positively contribute to any thread because they can’t. Their thing is to scold and admonish from the side line.

Just had time to skim read this.

Two standout points for me.

GIDS refused to provide its data to Cass. And the graphs showing the rise in referrals only go from 2009 to 2016 (showing a sharp rise in adolescent females) because GIDS stopped recording referrals by birth sex after 2016.

😲

To me that reads like GIDS knew full well that what they were doing was highly unethical, did it anyway and have tried to cover their tracks.

This is the most shocking part to me.

They knew. They damn well knew.

So we are entering the 'its not what you said, it's the way you said it" stages now?

Yes, you may have been right but you were so extreme about it.

Let's be honest.

By the end of this year Labour will be in power.

If women had been less forceful about this the UK's attitudes to this would not have diverged from the rest of the English speaking world to the extent that they have before the next election.

And we still have a few months to go during which more stuff will probably come out.

Rainbowshit · 10/04/2024 10:06

saraclara · 10/04/2024 04:46

But she said this care was made even more difficult to provide by the polarised public debate, and the way in which opposing sides had “pointed to research to justify a position, regardless of the quality of the studies”.
“There are few other areas of healthcare where professionals are so afraid to openly discuss their views, where people are vilified on social media, and where name-calling echoes the worst bullying behaviour. This must stop.

If we're going to reflect on this report honestly and objectively, we also need to own that this branch of Mumsnet has played a part in that polarisation of public debate.

Oh no you don't. Mumsnet deserves praise for being one of the few sites that did not completely censor concerns about the care being given to gender distressed children.

You don't get to blame those that had the courage to point out that the emperor has no clothes.

Yes. 'If you hadn't been so strident I might have listened to you. So, really, when you think about it, it's all your fault.'

It's annoying how so many 'voice of reason' journalists and politicians are now 'both sides'-ing this. No, one side has been batshit and dangerous, the other side has been dedicated and determined despite being defamed, threatened and punished for their knowledge. If it hadn't been for 'terfs' then the media and the government would still be parroting the idea that 'gender-affirmative care' was a universally good and life-saving treatment.

Agreed.

Despite her diplomatic language, Cass has come down firmly on one side.

So let's stop "both sidesing" this and demonising the people who have been saying for years what Dr Cass has now said officially.

I think the "we will not debate our existence" line is not just hyperbolic, but deeply hypocritical.

Ultimately, there are two opposing views on what a woman is.

If your position is "trans women are women, no debate, trans people will not debate their existence", what you are simultaneously saying is, "female people do not exist as a discrete category and what is more female people are not allowed to debate whether they exist as a discrete category".

So who is denying whose existence, exactly?

Cass did disregard evidence, on the basis that it was poor quality.

Trans activists have obviously interpreted this as her disregarding evidence which did not support the conclusion she wanted to reach, i.e. it was a stitch up.

Very rarely on here have I seen anything other than robust, clearly stated, evidenced based argument, mostly in response to untruths expressed elsewhere and unevidenced, aggressive and poorly expressed opinion on here. That’s not polarisation. It’s the debate that wasn’t allowed to happen elsewhere.

100% fucking this!!

I am sure over the coming days and weeks there will be many attempts to ‘both side’ this and branding of FWR as the equal & equivalent of TRA.

that can fuck right off to the far side of fuck

the Cass report says everything we have been saying for years! We have said treatment needs to be evidence based, we have highlighted the massive increase in young ND women identifying as boys, we have pointed out the quite staggeringly poor practice at GIDS. All of this is vindicated

there will be no rewriting of history. There’s been enough of that already !!

And everyone is welcome to join discussion here. We don't dox or issue threats of rape and other violence to posters who disagree.

I've lost count of the number of TRAs who feel confident enough to start a thread without having understood a single thing we've been talking about on other threads. How inclusive is that, that they feel able to do that?

We don't turn up in trans spaces to threaten rape and violence and drown out their speaking. We don't mobilise thugs to prevent gatherings of trans people.

I think the problem is that we disagree. We argue, debate, cite evidence and quite often swear. We don't automatically defer to men. This space, ironically, is gender non conforming and TRAs don't like that. We're supposed to stay in our gender box, because to do otherwise undermines their argument.

WarriorN · 10/04/2024 09:35

Next step:

The school's guidance needs completely updating to reflect observations.

It needs to be statutory

It needs to be embedded in "keeping children safe in education," the statutory framework for safeguarding children in education, citing online influences, porn, sexual abuse etc

Currently there's a whimsical phrase that says being lgbtq isn't a safeguarding issue in itself. This was used by TRAs at the neu to pass those ridiculous motions.

Cass means a divorce of the T from LGB in kcsie.

It means no more concept of a "trans child."

It means that indications by children of trans identity is flagged as a safeguarding issue

hamstersarse · 10/04/2024 09:34

I wonder how these medics who fell for it all hook line and sinker in their quest to be virtuous will ever backtrack on the disgustingness that they have inflicted on thousands of children. They don’t tend to be known for their humility these types of people.

The report is welcome but I’m interested to see what happens next. The reaction from IW is interesting because it is digging heels in further, playing on the victimised status, and that line will be helpful for the butcher medics who can’t come to terms with what they’ve done.

I stress the importance of the Online Harms Act with this.

Promoting transition to minors needs to be right there with Pro-Ana and pro-suicide stuff.

I’ve said this from the beginning.

In addition, finding out that the NHS records gender over sex is absolute madness. How on earth do cervical/breast cancer screening letters get sent out correctly?

They don't. It is upto the patient and/or clinician to remember/create a system. And of course, if you've had a mastectomy/hysterectomy, then screening may not be appropriate so it is very individual.

More importantly, your blood reference parameters will be wrong, so a borderline anaemic (trans)woman (who could simply be a bit anaemic because of menstruation, if they were biologically female) is a VERY anaemic male (a very worrying picture which requires urgent investigation). Sorry, that is a bit confused - hope you follow that. Just one example.

I have seen a PSA done on a transman. And recording presence of prostate in transwomen (as it is never removed) is vital - prostate cancer can present with backache for example, and can be missed if the clinician is unaware that the patient is male. IT IS A NIGHTMARE.
